NetEase has denied that it shut down an AI department or instructed its studios to stop using AI in games. The claim came from Grasshopper Manufacture co-founder Goichi “Suda51” Suda, who described an alleged company-wide policy in an interview. NetEase later said, “The situation described did not occur, and we have not published any related policies.”
Official 2026 GDC listings also show NetEase personnel scheduled to present AI-related work. The available evidence therefore does not support reporting a company-wide NetEase AI ban as established fact.

What Suda51 claimed
Suda51 discussed NetEase’s alleged AI policy while speaking to Eurogamer about Romeo is a Dead Man. According to the account reported by Insider Gaming, he said NetEase had previously maintained a section researching and developing AI, later folded it, and told “all their companies” or studios not to use AI in games “at all.”
That was Suda51’s account—not a policy document or a confirmed statement from a named NetEase executive. He said he did not know the reason directly. His suggestions that player hostility toward AI and copyright-infringement concerns may have motivated the decision were explicitly assumptions, not explanations supplied by NetEase.

NetEase’s response changed the status of the story
NetEase denied the account. In a statement cited by Insider Gaming, the company said: The situation described did not occur, and we have not published any related policies.
NetEase also denied, in a response reported by GamesRadar, that it had closed an AI department or mandated that its studios avoid AI.
This does not prove that no NetEase team ever reorganized, reduced, or ended a particular AI project. It does mean the broad account of a company-wide shutdown and prohibition is disputed by the company itself and has not been independently established.

What the 2026 GDC listings show
The official GDC Festival of Gaming 2026 schedule listed multiple NetEase-related AI sessions. The event was scheduled for March 9–13 in San Francisco.
- “Short Form Futures: How AI Turned MMO Players into TikTok Creators,” presented by NetEase game AI designer Chang Liu.
- “‘LifeAfter’: AIGC Paradigm Change in Mobile Game Art Production,” presented by NetEase Games’ Xiudong Zhang and Zhaoxing Yang.
The official LifeAfter session description refers to AI integration in production pipelines and human–AI collaboration. Zhang’s official speaker biography says he was spearheading AI innovation at NetEase Games and focusing on AI toolchains for production efficiency.
These listings are strong evidence of continuing public AI-related activity or advocacy within NetEase in 2026. They are not proof that every NetEase studio uses generative AI, that AI-generated material appears in every game, or that no internal restrictions exist for particular tools or use cases. They are, however, inconsistent with the simple interpretation that NetEase had abandoned AI altogether.

“AI” is not one technology
The controversy also depends on what “AI” means. Traditional game AI can include NPC behavior, pathfinding, matchmaking, procedural systems, player modeling, fraud detection, recommendations, and server optimization.
Generative AI, or AIGC, refers to systems that create or transform content such as text, images, video, audio, animation, dialogue, or 3D assets. Suda51’s comments concerned game creation and generative-AI-related research, but the phrase “not use AI at all” is much broader than that context.
A company could restrict AI-generated art or writing in shipped games while continuing to use machine learning for analytics, moderation, operations, or gameplay systems. No source cited in the available reporting establishes a formal NetEase taxonomy or written policy covering these categories.

Why the original claim spread
The allegation was unusually newsworthy because Suda51 is a recognizable developer and Grasshopper Manufacture is a NetEase-owned studio. It also described a rare and sweeping corporate position during an intense debate over generative AI in games. The phrase “not use AI at all” was especially easy to turn into a definitive headline.
Suda51’s uncertainty was easier to lose in shorter summaries: he did not identify a written policy, name a decision-maker, or claim direct knowledge of the company’s reasoning. The later denial made this a story about conflicting accounts, not confirmation of a ban.

Suda51 said Grasshopper did not use generative AI to make Romeo is a Dead Man. He also expressed the view that human-made creative work communicates effort and that AI-generated material can feel wrong or “off.”

A cluster of four MS-S1 MAX units successfully ran a DeepSeek-R1 671B Q4 large model. A reserved cluster power-on interface allows for unified start-up and shutdown
That is a creative or studio-level position. It is not evidence of a NetEase-wide mandate, and it does not establish that every Grasshopper employee or NetEase-owned studio shares it.
What remains unknown
- Whether NetEase ever had a narrower AI-related reorganization.
- Whether a particular studio or department temporarily stopped a specific kind of generative-AI work.
- Whether Suda51 was referring to a past, localized, translated, or misunderstood internal decision.
- How NetEase internally defines AI and AIGC.
- Whether AI tools were used for shipped-game content, marketing, video production, or behind-the-scenes production support.
A definitive company-wide ban would normally require a written policy, an on-record statement from responsible leadership, multiple independent employee accounts, or internal documentation defining the policy’s date and scope. The available evidence provides one developer’s account and a direct corporate denial, not that level of confirmation.
Timeline
- Before February 4, 2026: Suda51 gave the interview in connection with Romeo is a Dead Man.
- February 4, 2026: Insider Gaming published the report and added NetEase’s denial in an update.
- February 4, 2026: GamesRadar reported NetEase’s broader denial and cited its AI-related GDC listings.
- March 9–13, 2026: GDC Festival of Gaming was scheduled to feature multiple NetEase AI-related sessions.
Bottom line
There is no verified evidence that NetEase issued a company-wide ban on AI. Suda51 made the original claim, NetEase denied that the described situation occurred and said it had published no related policy, and official 2026 GDC listings show NetEase continuing to present AI-related work. The original headline is therefore misleading if read as a confirmed statement of NetEase policy.
