Netflix began rolling out its mobile-game player names on September 27, 2022. Netflix calls them game handles, not gamertags: a handle is a unique public name tied to one Netflix profile and used in games that support it. Netflix’s announcement described a global rollout; the feature is documented in Netflix’s current support guidance, but support varies by game. Netflix’s launch announcement and current handle instructions explain the distinction.
What Netflix’s game handle does
A game handle gives a Netflix profile a public player identity that can appear in supported mobile games, including multiplayer play and leaderboards. Each eligible profile can have one handle; Kids profiles cannot use them. It is associated with the Netflix profile, so a separate gaming account is not required.
The handle is not a universal social profile. Netflix says some games use handles for features such as leaderboards, while others may let you create one without displaying or using it in gameplay. Its documentation does not establish a universal friends list, direct messaging, voice chat, or cross-platform matchmaking.

Netflix announced the global rollout on September 27, 2022, describing handles as part of a more personalized mobile-games experience and a way for players to find one another and play together. The announcement followed earlier testing in a smaller group of games. Contemporary reporting said availability was gradual, so players might not have seen the option at the same time. The 2022 announcement is a historical launch, not evidence of a new 2026 rollout.

Games mentioned around launch
Netflix’s announcement named three examples of how handles could be used. These were examples, not a promise that every Netflix game would support the feature.

Netflix’s announcement described those examples. Earlier test coverage also named Into the Breach, Bowling Ballers, Heads Up!, and Mahjong Solitaire; that list comes from contemporary Android Headlines reporting, not an official complete list of supported launch games.

How to create or manage a handle
Netflix’s current instructions differ by platform. Use the profile for which you want the handle; the handle belongs to that profile.
Android
- Open Netflix and select the desired profile.
- Tap Games at the top of the screen.
- Find the Create your Netflix game handle banner and tap Get Started.
- Enter an available handle and tap Save.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Netflix and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile, tap Game handle, enter an available name, and save it.
Web browser
- Open Netflix’s profile-management page and select the profile.
- Open that profile’s details and find the Game Handle section.
- Enter the name and save the change.
From a participating game
- Open the game and select the Netflix profile you use to play.
- Tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Create Game Handle or Manage Game Handle, enter the name, and save.
These paths follow Netflix’s current support instructions; labels and visibility can vary with the app and game.

Handle rules and changing a name
- A handle must be 3–16 characters long and unique.
- It cannot contain emoji, punctuation, or special characters, and it must use no more than one script or language.
- Capitalization does not make a name distinct: “CoolCat,” “coolcat,” and “COOLCAT” count as the same handle.
- You can edit or change a handle, but you cannot delete it outright.
- Handles must follow Netflix’s community guidelines. Netflix may change a violating handle and notify the account email; inappropriate handles can be reported to Netflix support.
If a name is taken, try adding a number or another distinguishing word rather than changing capitalization. Netflix’s full rules are on its game-handle support page.
Does a game handle cost extra?
No separate fee or gaming account is specified for the handle. Netflix says an active membership generally provides access to Netflix games, which do not have extra in-game purchases under its stated model. That means games are included through eligible Netflix access, not free independently of a membership. See Netflix’s games membership and account guidance.

What to check if you cannot find the option
- Check the profile: Kids profiles are ineligible. Make sure you selected the profile you want to use.
- Check the game: Handle creation or display depends on game support; a handle does not guarantee a social or leaderboard feature in every title.
- Check device and title availability: Netflix says general mobile-game recommendations are Android 9 or later, iOS 17 or later for iPhone, and iPadOS 17 or later for iPad, but requirements vary by game. Country, device compatibility, and a profile’s maturity setting can also affect which games are available. Consult Netflix’s mobile-games requirements for the relevant title.
- Allow for interface differences: The option may appear in a different place depending on platform, app version, or whether the game offers handle management in-game. Netflix’s current support paths are more useful than launch-day directions.
Game progress is tied to the Netflix profile used to play. Netflix warns that deleting that profile can permanently delete its associated game progress; this is separate from changing a handle. See Netflix’s account and games guidance.
