Netflix’s “86 games by year’s end” statement was a December 2023 forecast, not a permanent catalog size and not a 2026 figure. The company said games would be included with Netflix memberships without advertisements, in-app purchases or separate game fees, while nearly 90 additional titles were in development. Since then, Netflix Games has grown from a mobile-first experiment into a changing mix of mobile downloads, licensed premium games, Netflix-franchise projects and limited TV and cloud-play tests.
The practical verdict in 2026 is straightforward: Netflix Games is a worthwhile bonus for existing subscribers and a credible source of occasional mobile or narrative games. It is not a replacement for a dedicated service such as Xbox Game Pass, Apple Arcade, a console subscription or a PC storefront.
What Netflix actually promised
In its December 2023 update, Netflix said it expected to have 86 games available by the end of 2023. The wording described an expected end-of-year availability target, not 86 games already released, an announced-games total, a guarantee for every country or a current global catalog count. The same announcement positioned games as part of an existing Netflix membership. Netflix said its versions would have no ads, in-app purchases or separate game fees. A subscription was still required, and availability could vary by country, device, profile, age rating and account restrictions.

How Netflix Games developed
2021: A mobile-first launch
Netflix began with games on phones and tablets rather than a console or PC storefront. Members selected a title in the Netflix mobile app, followed a link to the relevant App Store or Google Play listing, installed it and authenticated with their Netflix account. 2021 onward: Building studios as well as licensing games
Netflix’s strategy was broader than placing a few promotional tie-ins in an app. It acquired Night School Studio, the developer known for Oxenfree, in September 2021; the acquisition is documented in Netflix’s announcement. Netflix also acquired Next Games and Boss Fight Entertainment, announced internal development plans including teams in Finland and Los Angeles, and continued working with outside developers.

- Netflix-published or licensed games: titles distributed through the membership, whether or not Netflix made them.
- Games from acquired studios: projects made by teams Netflix owns.
- Internal-development projects: games produced by Netflix’s own development organization.
- Netflix-franchise games: interactive works connected to series or films, which may be made internally or with partners.
2023–2026: Beyond phone downloads
Netflix began testing games on TVs and computers in selected markets, including the United States, United Kingdom and Canada in its early description. The company has continued adding mobile and TV titles; its 2025 preview is at Netflix Tudum. TV and cloud play matters strategically because it moves Netflix toward a living-room gaming service, but it remains device-, title- and region-specific rather than universal.

What is in the catalog?
Netflix-owned and Netflix-linked games
Netflix has used games to deepen relationships with its entertainment properties. Examples include Stranger Things games, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, Netflix Stories: Love Is Blind and other interactive-fiction projects based on Netflix series and films. Netflix highlighted Oxenfree II and Netflix Stories: Love Is Blind in its 2023 update.
Licensed premium and independent games
The catalog has also included established third-party games such as Grand Theft Auto titles, Monument Valley, Monument Valley 2, Into the Breach, Bloons TD 6, Hades, Braid: Anniversary Edition and Football Manager Mobile. This mix gives Netflix more substance than a catalog made only of television tie-ins, although availability changes over time.

Mobile, TV and cloud are not the same catalog
A game listed for iPhone or Android may not be playable on a television or computer. Cloud-played titles require compatible hardware, a supported region, a Netflix profile, a suitable controller or Netflix controller app where required, and a reliable internet connection. Netflix’s current catalog at Netflix Tudum Games is the best place to check what is listed now; it should not be treated as a permanent inventory.
Did Netflix reach 86 games?
The defensible answer is that Netflix announced an expectation of 86 available games by the end of 2023, but that announcement is not a permanent, independently audited record proving that exactly 86 titles were playable in every market on December 31. A catalog count depends on what is counted: mobile and cloud versions, regional listings, duplicate releases, and announced-but-unreleased games can produce different totals.

By 2026, the relevant question is not whether the number 86 remains printed on a catalog page. Netflix’s selection is dynamic: games are added, removed and sometimes limited to particular devices or countries. Any current count should state its date, market, platforms included and whether each game is counted once. An external tracker reported 102 titles in a mid-2026 tally, but that is an independent count rather than an official Netflix total; see What’s on Netflix.

On a phone or tablet
- Open the Netflix app or browse the Netflix Games catalog.
- Select a game and follow the link to the iOS App Store or Google Play.
- Install the game, then open it.
- Authenticate with the Netflix account and choose a profile if prompted.
- Play the Netflix version without a separate purchase, in-game advertising or in-app purchases under Netflix’s stated model.
Labels differ by operating system, app version, country and account. Netflix’s support page at help.netflix.com/en/node/121442 also warns that saved progress from a previously released version of a game cannot be transferred to the Netflix version. A Netflix edition is therefore access through a subscription, not ownership of the same product sold elsewhere.
On a TV or computer
- Confirm that the device, title and country support Netflix’s TV or cloud experience.
- Use an eligible Netflix profile and the required Netflix controller app or compatible controller.
- Expect streamed play to depend on broadband quality, latency and supported hardware.
- Do not assume that every mobile download, controller or smart TV works with every game.

Why Netflix is investing in games
Netflix has described gaming as a long-term effort rather than a short-term revenue product. Games can increase engagement with a subscription, extend successful intellectual property into interactive formats, create more contact points between shows and fans, and give Netflix a route into connected-TV and cloud entertainment. Axios reported on the company’s long-term positioning at Axios.
Retention is a plausible strategic benefit, but it should not be presented as a proven single motive or as evidence that gaming has caused a measurable change in cancellations. Netflix’s move is best understood as an attempt to make its subscription a broader entertainment ecosystem while developing capabilities it can use over many years.
Who should use Netflix Games?
Good fit
- You already pay for Netflix and want extra games without another monthly bill.
- You prefer mobile, narrative, puzzle, strategy or casual games.
- You enjoy Netflix franchises and interactive storytelling.
- You want to sample premium games before buying a separate platform subscription.
Poor fit
- You need a deep console or PC catalog, competitive infrastructure or broad multiplayer support.
- You require permanent ownership independent of a subscription.
- You need guaranteed cross-save with a game you already own elsewhere.
- You are considering buying a phone, TV or streaming device solely for Netflix Games.
Bottom line
Netflix did expand into gaming, and its 86-game statement was a genuine 2023 target backed by a larger development pipeline. The service that emerged is broader than the original mobile experiment: it combines Netflix-linked projects, acquired-studio work, licensed premium games and limited TV or cloud play. But “86 games” is historical, not a current catalog promise. In 2026, Netflix Games is best treated as a changing subscription bonus and an emerging interactive-entertainment platform—not as a full substitute for dedicated gaming services.
