Yes. Netflix’s Wii streaming service was retired at the end of January 2019. The notice applied to the original Nintendo Wii and Wii mini—not the Wii U—and an installed Netflix Channel could no longer authenticate or stream once Nintendo’s Wii-era video services ended.
What the 2019 notice actually said
Netflix told customers that Nintendo would suspend video-streaming services on Wii, specifically including the Netflix Channel, after January 31, 2019. Contemporary coverage reproduced that customer notice: Nintendo Life report.
That wording is more precise than claiming a particular hour on January 31. Nintendo later described Wii video-on-demand services as ending at approximately the same time as the Wii Shop Channel closure. In practical terms, Wii streaming ended at the end of January 2019; reports variously describe January 30 or January 31 as the final usable day.
Which Nintendo systems were affected?

Why did Wii streaming end?
Nintendo was retiring the Wii’s broader digital-services infrastructure. The Wii Shop Channel launched in December 2006, Nintendo announced its closure in September 2017, Wii Points purchases and redemption ended on March 26, 2018, and purchases of new Wii Shop software ended on January 30, 2019. The available announcements establish a platform-lifecycle decision, not a specific technical or financial explanation from Netflix. Claims about DRM, licensing costs, encryption, or a particular internal calculation go beyond what Nintendo and Netflix documented.

The later Wii U and 3DS dates are documented in Nintendo’s Netflix service-discontinuation notice. They were a separate retirement, not a delayed date for the original Wii.

What happened to an installed Netflix Channel?
The channel could remain stored on the console, and in some cases the icon or launch screen could still appear. That did not preserve Netflix access. Launching an application is different from authenticating with Netflix and receiving a playable stream; the latter required an active, supported service endpoint.
Can reinstalling or repairing the Wii restore Netflix?
No. The shutdown was server-side and platform-wide, so local troubleshooting cannot bring back the official service.

- Reinstalling the old Wii Netflix Channel cannot recreate Netflix’s retired servers.
- An SD-card backup or a second Wii does not restore platform support.
- Changing DNS settings, reconnecting Wi-Fi, creating a new Netflix account, or resetting the console addresses a local configuration—not the discontinued service.
- Replacing the sensor bar or other Wii accessories has no bearing on Netflix authentication.
The Wii Shop no longer provided a supported route to download new software after January 30, 2019, and Nintendo’s documentation placed Wii video-on-demand services at the same end-of-platform transition.

Smart TV
A current television with an official Netflix app is the simplest all-in-one replacement. Verify the exact model’s support before buying; Netflix warns that some televisions and streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer be supported.
Dedicated streaming player
A current Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, or another device listed in Netflix’s supported guidance provides a remote-controlled interface without using the Wii. Check the exact model’s Netflix compatibility and update policy rather than relying on a “Netflix” label on used hardware.

Supported game console
A console with a current, officially supported Netflix app can serve as the playback device. Do not infer support from the Wii shutdown or assume that every Nintendo system has Netflix.
Laptop connected by HDMI
If you already own a suitable computer, open Netflix at Netflix.com and connect the laptop to the television by HDMI. This avoids buying a streaming box, but the computer must stay powered and may require display, audio, or browser troubleshooting.
Phone or tablet
A supported mobile device can play Netflix directly. Casting or mirroring depends on the specific phone, app, television, and network, so confirm compatibility before treating it as a living-room replacement.

- Current Netflix support: Confirm the exact model appears in Netflix’s supported-device information or is sold through a platform with an official, updateable Netflix app.
- Television connection: Most players require HDMI. A converter for a composite-only television changes the connector, not the device’s Netflix capabilities.
- Internet access: The player needs working Wi-Fi or another supported network connection.
- Remote and interface: A dedicated player is usually easier for a household than repeatedly connecting a computer.
- Account: You still need an active Netflix membership and must sign in through the official app or website.
- Used-device risk: Check app installation, update history, power supply, remote, and the seller’s exact model number. An old device that powers on may still be unsupported.
Common sources of confusion
- An old video or screenshot showing Netflix on Wii is historical evidence, not proof that the service still works.
- “Netflix no longer works on Nintendo consoles” is too broad: the original Wii ended in 2019, while Wii U and 3DS lasted until 2021.
- The phrase “after January 31” should not be converted into an unsupported time-zone-specific shutdown time.
- Buying another Wii is not a Netflix solution; the platform service itself was retired.
