Day’Ron Sharpe is expected to get a larger role—and a starting opportunity—for Brooklyn in 2026–27 after spending last season behind Nic Claxton, who is now in Chicago. But neither the Nets nor Sharpe have announced a minutes target. Sharpe says he is preparing to pace himself, avoid foul trouble and conserve energy as his workload grows.
Sharpe’s 2025–26 baseline
Sharpe averaged 8.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 18.7 minutes per game in 2025–26. He appeared in 62 games and started seven, according to the NBA player profile and the Nets’ March 12, 2026 update. Brooklyn also reported 1.1 steals per game and 60.1% shooting, with career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
Those numbers show what Sharpe produced in a reserve role; they do not establish what he will produce with more playing time. His minutes, starts and production could all change with the job.
Why his role could expand
Sharpe had been behind Claxton in Brooklyn’s center rotation. The NBA’s September 22, 2026 season preview says Claxton is now in Chicago and identifies Sharpe as a breakout candidate, with an opportunity to show he can contribute beyond the 18-to-20-minute role he previously held. The preview also says backup center could remain Sharpe’s best fit, so the starting opportunity is not a promise that he will start all season.

Positive on-off numbers need context
Across the prior three seasons, Brooklyn was 0.4 points per 100 possessions better than its opponents with Sharpe on the court and was outscored by 9.0 points per 100 when he was off, the NBA preview reports. The same preview cautions that much of the defensive difference came while Sharpe faced opposing reserves. The figures are encouraging context, not a forecast of how he will fare against starters.
The preview adds that Sharpe was one of five players to record at least 15 points and 12 rebounds per 36 minutes in each of the previous three seasons, while playing at least 750 minutes. That per-36 comparison describes production scaled to playing time; it is not a prediction that he will reach those totals in actual games.

What Sharpe says he will change
In a report published October 1, 2026, CBS Sports attributed Sharpe’s comments to reporting by Brian Lewis of the New York Post. Sharpe described preparing for the possibility of a much larger workload, saying: “And even if it’s double the minutes, learn how to pace myself during the game, learning what opportunities to take [to avoid] getting in foul trouble, saving myself for later on in the game.”
He added: “But I’m just going to play hard until the wheels fall off. That’s all I can do.” His reference to “double the minutes” was conditional; it was not an announced playing-time target. Pacing, foul management and energy conservation are the adjustments he says he intends to make, not evidence of a formal conditioning plan or a set limit.

Thumb surgery and what is known about readiness
On March 12, 2026, Brooklyn announced that Sharpe had torn the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, required surgery and would miss the rest of the 2025–26 season. The team said at the time, “Further updates will be provided following the procedure.” The available reports do not establish a current official medical-clearance statement, so his expected opportunity should not be treated as confirmation of a specific clearance date.

The central unknown is the workload Brooklyn actually assigns: the October 1 report and NBA season preview describe an expected larger role, but neither gives an exact minutes projection. As that role takes shape, useful indicators will be:
