Newzoo’s year-in-review page appeared in search results with a rounded 2023 figure of $184.0 billion and year-over-year growth of 0.6%. That is consistent with the rounded headline, though it differs slightly from GamesBeat’s reported $183.9 billion adjustment. How did revenue differ by platform?
The reported platform results were mixed rather than uniformly negative. GamesBeat’s account of Newzoo’s estimates gives the following figures for 2023:

Newzoo’s Tom Wijman was reported as linking PC and console growth in part to cross-platform release strategies. GamesBeat pointed to Helldivers 2, released on PC and PlayStation, as an example. That example illustrates the strategy but does not establish it as the cause of the market-wide growth.
What did Newzoo report about hit concentration and playtime?
GamesBeat attributed two concentration measures to Newzoo: 43 games accounted for 90% of new-game revenue in 2023, while 66 titles accounted for 80% of global playtime. The first figure is specifically about revenue from new games, not 90% of all games-industry revenue. Together, the measures describe a market in which both new-release earnings and player attention were concentrated among a relatively small set of titles.
GamesBeat also reported that average quarterly playtime was 26% lower than in Q1 2021. That is a comparison with Q1 2021—not a 26% year-over-year decline during 2023.

The accessible reporting gives the size of the revision and the resulting platform and engagement figures, but does not establish the specific modeling inputs that led Newzoo to adjust its estimate. The change from $187.7 billion to $183.9 billion is a forecast revision; by itself, it is not evidence that the games industry collapsed. The divergent platform results show why the total alone is an incomplete account: mobile declined while PC and combined PC-console revenue increased.
