Nex Playground has a credible claim to being one of 2026’s most appealing family tech gifts—but not because it replaces a Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, or PlayStation. It is a compact TV-connected system built around camera-based motion tracking, short local multiplayer games, dance, sports, and active play. Nex says it sold more than 650,000 units in 2025, while The Guardian reported U.S. sales above one million and a Black Friday week in which Nex outsold Xbox consoles. Those are strong momentum signals, not proof that it is a technical competitor to mainstream consoles.
The more important buying question is value. The U.S. console now costs $299, includes five starter games, and reaches its full potential through an optional Play Pass subscription. With the annual pass, the approximate first-year cost is $388 before tax, shipping, or discounts.
What Nex Playground actually is
Nex Playground is closer to a modern Wii or Kinect than to a conventional game console. It connects to a television, watches players through a built-in camera, and translates body movement into game actions using local AI motion tracking. The included D-pad remote is mainly for menus and player selection; players generally do not control the games with a traditional gamepad.
The platform is designed for in-person play. There is no browser, messaging, chat, third-party app store, advertising, or in-app purchase system. Nex makes and commissions the games for a closed, family-focused ecosystem, with local cooperative and competitive play rather than an online social network. Why it is suddenly a holiday story
Nex has benefited from several trends at once: nostalgia for living-room motion gaming, demand for simpler family activities, and frustration with consoles that require downloads, account setup, complex controllers, and expensive individual games.
Nex reported more than 650,000 units sold during 2025. The Guardian subsequently reported more than one million U.S. sales and said Nex outsold Xbox consoles during the 2025 Black Friday week. That comparison covers a particular sales window and reflects pricing, availability, and holiday audiences—not equivalent hardware performance.
The company is also expanding its content pitch. Its announced 2026 roadmap includes sports games, a Dude Perfect title, NBA-related development, Tiny Chef content, Starri music updates, and a planned connected-playdate feature. These are announced or planned features, not guarantees that every item will be available on a particular purchase date. Nex expanded into the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2026 as well.

Nex’s official U.S. pages list the hardware at $299 as of August 2026. Older reviews quoting $249 or $250 describe the previous price and should not be used as the current baseline.

The console works without Play Pass, and the five included games remain the baseline experience. However, new releases and the broader catalog require an active subscription. Nex does not frame the service as a traditional store where families buy individual games permanently. For a household expecting regular use, the annual plan is the sensible comparison; for a subscription-averse buyer, the five-game package is the real product being purchased.
What games are included?
The current starter pack lists Fruit Ninja, Go Keeper, Starri, Party Fowl, and Whac-a-Mole on Nex Playground. The Play Pass catalog adds a changing mix of party mini-games, rhythm and dance, sports, puzzles, reaction games, fitness activities, and character-focused titles.
Examples in the catalog and announced lineup include Bluey, NHL, Zumba, Sesame Street, How to Train Your Dragon, Care Bears, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie, Peppa Pig, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Tiny Chef, Dora, and Rubik’s. Check the [live Nex games catalog](https://www.nexplayground.com/games) before buying because availability and the catalog count can change.
The key distinction is breadth versus depth. There may be more than 50 activities, but many are designed for short, repeatable sessions rather than long campaigns, deep progression, or hundreds of hours of solo play. Reviews from TechRadar and WIRED describe the games as accessible and sociable while identifying shallow content and the subscription model as the principal weaknesses.

Setup, space, and camera tracking
- Place the Playground centered in front of or below the television.
- Keep it near the front edge of the furniture so the camera has a clear view.
- Nex recommends a device height of roughly 15 to 60 inches.
- Connect the supplied HDMI cable and power supply.
- Join a Wi-Fi network and pair or use the included remote.
- Download the available games and clear the floor before playing.
A cramped room can undermine the entire experience. Coffee tables, sofas, pets, poor lighting, people walking behind players, and players standing too close or too far away can produce missed movements, delayed reactions, or multiplayer tracking problems. Better lighting, a centered camera, and an unobstructed play area usually matter more than technical specifications.
The current package includes the console with a magnetic camera privacy cover, an approximately five-foot HDMI cable, an approximately five-foot power supply, a D-pad remote, and two AAA batteries. Earlier packaging included a rechargeable joystick remote and yellow tilt stand, so secondhand buyers should verify the exact contents.
Internet and offline use
Internet is required for initial setup, game downloads, system updates, and new Play Pass content. After games are downloaded, Nex says they can be played offline. Captive-portal networks—common at hotels, airports, schools, and public guest Wi-Fi—are not supported, and some enterprise networks require specific domains and ports. If the device is destined for a grandparent’s house or holiday trip, test that location’s Wi-Fi before wrapping the gift.

Nex says the platform is kidSAFE+ COPPA certified and processes motion tracking locally on the device. It says video and audio are not saved or stored, although some games may temporarily use video for local replay or highlights without saving those recordings. The included physical camera cover provides an additional hardware safeguard. Those claims should not be simplified to “the camera never processes video”; processing is necessary for motion tracking.

The closed design limits exposure to strangers, advertisements, and chat, but it does not remove physical risks. Supervise younger children around furniture, siblings, pets, hard floors, and crowded rooms. Nex recommends the system for ages five and up; some games may be physically difficult for children under six.
Who should buy Nex Playground?
It is a strong fit when:
- Children are roughly five to 10, or the household enjoys casual group play.
- The TV area has clear floor space.
- Two or more people are likely to play together.
- The family accepts an $89 annual content fee for ongoing releases.
- Recognizable children’s brands and easy controls matter more than graphics.
- Short, repeatable activities are preferable to long games.
Skip it when:
- The buyer expects Minecraft, Roblox, Mario, Fortnite, or major AAA releases.
- The intended player is an older teenager or adult seeking deep progression.
- The household dislikes subscriptions or wants to own individual digital games.
- The TV area is too cramped for reliable camera tracking.
- One older player will use it alone most of the time.
Nex Playground versus mainstream consoles

Switch 2 is the better choice for portability, Nintendo franchises, and long-form games. Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 are better for traditional libraries, high-end graphics, and older players. A used Wii or Kinect setup may cost less, but sourcing reliable hardware and compatible accessories is less predictable. Nex’s real alternatives may also be board games, tablets, a fitness service, or buying no additional console.
Common problems and fixes
The camera cannot see the player
Move the unit to the furniture’s front edge, center it with the TV, adjust its height within Nex’s recommended range, improve lighting, clear the camera’s view, and increase the distance between players and the screen where possible.
Games or updates are missing
Use the remote to open the top menu and check Wi-Fi. Reconnect, allow 10–15 minutes for downloads, select the gift tile if one appears, and restart through Settings > System > About if necessary. Try another network or a mobile hotspot. Remember that new games require Play Pass, and captive portals are unsupported.
Verdict
Nex Playground could be a standout 2026 holiday gift for a specific household: one with younger children, open floor space, and a genuine appetite for local movement games. It is simple, social, and less intimidating than a conventional controller-based console. But at $299, with only five starter games and an $89 annual pass for the full catalog, it is not automatically a bargain.
Buy it as an active family entertainment system—not as a cheaper Switch 2 or a replacement for PlayStation or Xbox. If the family will regularly play together and accepts the subscription economics, Nex is unusually compelling. If it wants deep games, individual ownership, or solo play for older users, spend the money elsewhere.
