Questionable means the NFL is uncertain whether a player will play; it is not a prediction. Practice participation tells you how much the player practiced, while game status gives the club’s assessment of availability. Neither replaces the game-day inactive list, which is a separate check closer to kickoff.
What do NFL injury-report labels mean?
Game status
- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play.
- Doubtful: It is unlikely the player will participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
These are game-status designations, not measures of practice workload. The NFL defines the terms in its 2016 injury-reporting policy announcement.
Practice participation
- Did Not Participate: The player did not take part in practice.
- Limited Participation: The player took part in less than 100% of normal repetitions.
- Full Participation: The player took part in 100% of normal repetitions.
Participation and game status are separate fields. A limited practice entry does not itself mean a player is questionable, and full participation does not guarantee that the player will be active. Read the latest game-status report and then check the inactive list.
Does questionable mean a player will play?
No. “Questionable” means the outcome is uncertain; the NFL’s definition does not give a probability or guarantee. The league reported in 2016 that approximately 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played. Probable was subsequently removed as a game-status category, and that historical figure does not describe the chances that a currently questionable player will play.

When do NFL injury reports come out?
There is no single report day for every game. Under the NFL’s 2026–27 filing calendar, the required day depends on the game day. Reports are due by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. On a day a club practices, an estimated practice report is not acceptable. Clubs must update a game-status report if a player’s condition changes after filing.
Because the schedule varies by game day, use the calendar rather than assuming every team reports on the same weekday. A filed report is also a snapshot: a later update can change the player’s status.

When are NFL inactives announced?
Check the official game-day inactive list near game time. NFL operations material says club representatives deliver a Game Day Administration Report that includes the inactive list to the referee at the 90-minute officiating meeting. That describes an administrative meeting, not a universal public posting deadline, so it does not establish an exact minute when every inactive list becomes publicly available.

- Check the report’s recency. Note when it was filed and look for a later update; clubs are required to update game status if a player’s condition changes after filing.
- Read the two fields separately. Practice participation describes the player’s repetitions; game status describes whether playing is uncertain, unlikely, or ruled out.
- Confirm against the inactive list. The game-day list is a later availability check. Do not treat an earlier practice entry as a substitute.
The NFL’s published definitions do not provide a probability model for turning participation or status labels into odds of playing. They are best read as distinct pieces of information whose timing matters.
