Several former NFL players have been reported to have filed for bankruptcy, but the available reporting does not verify ten cases in which both a formal filing and its timing after retirement are established. Bankruptcy is a specific legal process—not a synonym for being broke or struggling financially. Here are the reported cases, with the distinction made clear.
Why this is not a verified list of ten post-retirement bankruptcies
A March 31, 2025 roundup by The Quick Report names ten NFL players as bankruptcy cases: Jamal Lewis, Bernie Kosar, Clinton Portis, Vince Young, Chris McAlister, Andre Rison, Lawrence Taylor, Warren Sapp, Johnny Unitas, and Michael Vick. That list is a starting point, not proof that each person filed for bankruptcy or that the filing came after retirement.
The available case reporting is secondary coverage rather than a set of court records. It does not establish verified filing dates, chapters, and retirement dates for all ten. The distinction matters: reports of debt, lost wealth, or financial hardship alone do not demonstrate a bankruptcy filing.
Players with a reported bankruptcy filing
Vince Young
GOBankingRates reported that Young declared bankruptcy in 2014 and described debts and assets attributed to that report. Those figures should not be treated as verified filing totals without checking the underlying court record. The available account does not establish the filing’s timing relative to his retirement.

Lawrence Taylor
GOBankingRates reports that Taylor filed for bankruptcy in 1998, amid financial issues that included the risk of losing his home to foreclosure. The account does not provide primary filing documentation or establish that the filing followed retirement.
Warren Sapp
GOBankingRates places Sapp’s bankruptcy in 2012 and recounts reported debts, assets, and personal possessions. Those details remain secondary reporting rather than verified figures from a reviewed filing. The available evidence does not establish whether the filing occurred after he retired.

Michael Vick
GOBankingRates reports that Vick filed for bankruptcy in 2008 while imprisoned and that he had repaid nearly 85% of the reported debt by 2014. The repayment figure is attributed to that outlet and has not been verified here against filings or trustee reports. The account does not establish whether the filing came after retirement.
Clinton Portis
GOBankingRates describes Portis’s post-career financial troubles and recounts his account of losing money through advisers or investors. The available coverage does not settle the exact bankruptcy filing date or chapter, so it is not enough to present a formal filing as independently confirmed.

Johnny Unitas
The Quick Report says Unitas filed after retiring and associates his financial difficulties with business failures, including bowling alleys. The reviewed material does not provide a contemporaneous account or primary record to verify the claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the reporting says about causes—and what it does not
The accounts point to different reported pressures: business or investment losses, disputes over financial management, spending, tax liabilities, and child-support obligations. These are case-specific explanations reported in secondary coverage, not one proven cause shared by every player. Without primary records, it is also important not to present a reporter’s account as a player’s own explanation.
A frequently repeated claim that 78% of NFL players go bankrupt within five years of leaving the league should not be treated as established fact. A 2014 WhatCulture article repeated the figure without identifying an original study on the page. The reviewed material does not establish a reliable, traceable source for that statistic.
