Nginx RTMP Module Configuration for YouTube Streaming: Setup, RTMPS, and Troubleshooting

Configure NGINX as the local RTMP publishing endpoint, then use a verified RTMPS-capable relay for YouTube’s secure ingest requirements.

To stream through NGINX to YouTube, configure two separate links: your encoder publishes to an NGINX RTMP application, and a relay sends that feed onward to YouTube using the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The community nginx-rtmp-module example configures the first link; it does not, by itself, prove that your build can make YouTube’s required TLS connection with SNI.

How the NGINX-to-YouTube path works

Think of the setup as two connections, each with its own destination and credentials:

  1. Publisher to NGINX: An encoder sends a live feed to an RTMP server and application you control, such as rtmp://your-host/live/channelname. The application segment, live in this example, must match an application {} block in the NGINX configuration. The final path segment is interpreted by that application.
  2. NGINX or a relay to YouTube: A component forwards the feed to the YouTube RTMPS address and stream key associated with your stream. This outbound connection must meet YouTube’s RTMPS requirements; a generic RTMP relay directive is not enough to establish that it does.

The upstream nginx-rtmp-module README documents RTMP features including live applications and generic stream relay. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies the secure requirements for the YouTube hop. Keep the two roles distinct when configuring and troubleshooting.

Choose a compatible NGINX module build

The community arut/nginx-rtmp-module and the separately packaged NGINX Plus RTMP dynamic module are different distributions. Do not assume they have identical capabilities, installation steps, or compatibility with your NGINX build.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Deployment What to check Documented installation approach
NGINX Plus Use the instructions and package for your NGINX Plus platform. The vendor documentation describes its RTMP dynamic module; it does not certify a community module build. The NGINX Plus RTMP module guide shows installing the package, loading ngx_rtmp_module.so in the main context, testing with nginx -t, and reloading NGINX.
NGINX Open Source Check the exact NGINX version, operating system, package source, module revision, and whether the selected module supports the required build and outbound transport. The NGINX configure documentation describes building third-party modules with --add-module or dynamically when the module supports dynamic linking.

Module compatibility depends on the precise NGINX build and module revision. Do not copy a module-loading line from another distribution unless it matches yours.

Configure the local RTMP listener and application

This minimal shape follows the upstream community module’s live example. It defines an RTMP listener and an application; it does not configure a secure YouTube relay.

rtmp {
    server {
        listen 1935;
        application live {
            live on;
        }
    }
}

Place the rtmp {} block where the installed module expects it in your NGINX configuration. The example uses port 1935 as a listener value, not as a requirement to expose that port publicly. If the publisher is remote, permit access only from the systems or networks that should be able to publish, and protect the publishing endpoint.

  1. Confirm the module loads: Check the NGINX error log and configuration test output for module or directive errors.
  2. Set the application name: The application name in the publisher URL must match the configured block. For the example above, use an address shaped like rtmp://your-host/live/channelname.
  3. Restrict publishing: Use appropriate network controls and, where applicable, the module’s publish allow/deny controls or HTTP callbacks. Do not expose stream keys in public examples, URLs, or logs.
  4. Validate before reloading: Run nginx -t using the configuration and binary for your installed build; reload only after the test succeeds.

Get the correct YouTube RTMPS address and key

YouTube supplies the stream-specific ingest information. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream settings. Use the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL and use the associated stream key. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to publish to that stream.

For API clients, Google identifies the RTMPS address in cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress. Use the returned value rather than guessing or hard-coding an endpoint. The URL and key are tied to the stream or account configuration; placeholders in examples are not usable credentials.

Meet YouTube’s RTMPS transport requirements

Google describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through an SSL connection. For the YouTube connection, Google requires the rtmps scheme, a valid ingest server and application path, port 443, a TLS connection, and SNI set to the destination hostname. The SNI hostname matters for authentication, not just for resolving the address.

The upstream module README’s generic push examples demonstrate RTMP relay behavior, but do not establish TLS, port 443, and SNI support for YouTube. Before using a direct NGINX push, verify that the exact module build and relay path you deploy support all three. If not, use a separate RTMPS-capable encoder or relay component whose TLS and SNI behavior is documented. Avoid publishing a made-up push line or endpoint as if it were a verified configuration.

Test the end-to-end stream

  1. Start the local NGINX service after its configuration test passes.
  2. Configure your encoder to publish to the NGINX host and application path, such as rtmp://your-host/live/channelname, using the credentials or access controls you established for that endpoint.
  3. Configure the outbound relay component with the exact RTMPS address and stream key from Live Control Room, ensuring its connection uses TLS on port 443 and sends SNI for the destination hostname.
  4. Start publishing, then check Live Control Room for the incoming feed and any ingest status or errors.
  5. If the YouTube feed does not arrive, isolate the two links: first determine whether the encoder reaches the local NGINX application, then verify the relay’s secure connection to YouTube.

Troubleshoot connection failures

Symptom Likely check Action
Invalid certificate or SSL error The endpoint may use the wrong URL or protocol, or the connection may use the wrong port. Use the exact RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, connect on port 443, and establish TLS. YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guide advises checking the URL and port 443 for SSL errors.
Connection times out The client may be attempting cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS endpoint, or outbound access to port 443 may be blocked. Confirm the rtmps scheme, TLS transport, network egress, and SNI hostname. Google associates timeouts with accidentally using cleartext RTMP against an RTMPS server.
YouTube does not receive a feed, but the encoder connects to NGINX The local publishing link works, but the relay’s YouTube URL, key, path, or transport may be wrong. Check the stream-specific URL and key, then verify TLS, port 443, and SNI in the relay implementation.
The encoder cannot publish to NGINX The RTMP listener may not be active or reachable, the application segment may not match, or access controls may reject the publisher. Check that the module loaded, the listener is reachable on the configured port, the URL application matches the block, and network or publish rules permit the source.
NGINX rejects the configuration The module may not match the NGINX build, may not be loaded, or the directive may be unsupported by that module version. Run nginx -t, inspect the exact error, and confirm the module package or build matches the installed NGINX version and platform.

Optional module features you may not need

The community module also documents generic relay with push and pull, HLS and DASH output, recording, HTTP callbacks, statistics, and FFmpeg integrations. These are separate capabilities, not prerequisites for forwarding a feed to YouTube. Add local HLS, DASH, recording, a statistics endpoint, or transcoding only when your deployment needs it. The README’s HLS example expects H.264/AAC; verify codec expectations against the full delivery chain before adding a transcoding step.
