Short answer: Owncast is a packaged livestreaming server with its own viewer-facing HLS playback; nginx-rtmp is a configurable NGINX module for RTMP ingest, relay, recording, and related media outputs. Neither alone is a complete, unattended YouTube playout system. For either self-hosted setup, you still need a continuous content source, a route to YouTube, process supervision, monitoring, recovery planning, and a policy for long sessions.
Which should you choose?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A packaged streaming service with its own web viewing experience | Owncast | It accepts an RTMP contribution stream and processes it for HLS playback. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation |
| Fine-grained NGINX control over ingest, relays, recording, and media outputs | nginx-rtmp | It is an NGINX module whose configurable features include RTMP ingest and relay, recording, HLS/DASH output, callbacks, and FFmpeg integration. nginx-rtmp README |
| A ready-made, unattended YouTube channel playout service | Neither by itself | Both approaches need a content source and an operational design; YouTube’s encoder workflow still requires a feed sent to its server URL with the stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube encoder setup |
| Continuous streaming without keeping a home computer on | StreamNeo | It loops uploaded videos from the cloud to YouTube, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; the first day is free. |
There is no documented universal winner on performance, cost, uptime, or viewer capacity. Those depend on the host, configuration, encoding workload, bandwidth, and audience. Choose based on the architecture you want to operate, not on an assumption that either project guarantees a 24/7 channel.
What each option does—and what it does not do
Owncast: packaged playback and stream processing
Owncast accepts an RTMP stream and provides its own viewer-facing experience, processing the stream for HLS playback. Its broadcasting documentation gives a default RTMP port of 1935 and a publish URL in the form of a server address followed by /live/ and a stream key. See Owncast broadcasting
That makes Owncast a fit when you want the separate Owncast viewing service as well as an ingest destination. The cited Owncast setup documentation does not describe automatic forwarding from Owncast to YouTube. If YouTube is the destination, you need a separately configured forwarder or encoder to send the feed to YouTube.

nginx-rtmp: configurable media plumbing
nginx-rtmp is not a complete viewer-facing streaming product. It supplies configurable media-server functions through NGINX: ingest, relay, recording, HLS/DASH output, callbacks, and FFmpeg integration. Its README includes example application configurations, but those are building blocks, not a complete 24/7 channel with a playlist, health checks, or recovery policy. Read the nginx-rtmp module README
For YouTube output, configure a relay or encoder using the server URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A local RTMP server does not replace YouTube’s ingest endpoint or the stream key.

How to build a self-hosted 24/7 YouTube workflow
The following is an operational outline, not a claim that one configuration will suit every machine. In both approaches, first decide what will play continuously—such as a prepared playlist or an encoder-fed source—and how that source will reconnect after interruption.
With Owncast
- Install Owncast on a host you can keep online. Follow the current Owncast installation instructions. Its manual-install documentation identifies the web and RTMP ports and recommends running Owncast as a system service when it must run in the background and start on boot.
- Secure the initial setup. The installation documentation provides default administrator credentials and a stream key for first setup; change them immediately. Do not expose initial credentials as production credentials. Limit network access to the ports your setup needs, and do not publish an admin interface or ingest endpoint without considering access controls.
- Feed Owncast. Configure your encoder or media source to publish to the Owncast RTMP address, using the documented
/live/path and your configured key. Confirm the stream appears in Owncast playback before adding another hop. - Forward the feed to YouTube separately. Configure a suitable relay or encoder to send the live feed to YouTube’s ingest server URL with the stream key from Live Control Room. Owncast’s cited documentation establishes ingest to Owncast, not automatic YouTube forwarding; verify the forwarder’s protocol and codec support.
- Supervise and monitor the whole chain. Set the host to start the service on boot, monitor the source, Owncast, the forwarder, and network delivery, and define how each process restarts and alerts you. A service restart alone cannot recover a missing playlist or a failed YouTube connection.
With nginx-rtmp
- Build or install NGINX with the nginx-rtmp module. Follow the module’s current build and configuration guidance in its README. The module’s deployment is a NGINX configuration task, not a one-click channel setup.
- Configure an application for your source. The README’s examples show primitives such as
live on, recording, relay, HLS/DASH, and FFmpeg integration. Enable only the functions your design requires; for YouTube output, configure a relay or encoder to the YouTube server URL and stream key. - Provide an always-available content source. The module does not create a playlist or guarantee a media source. Run an encoder or playout process that can supply the intended feed continuously, and decide what happens when a file ends or the source disconnects.
- Supervise the source and services. Configure startup on boot, process restarts, health checks, logs, and alerts for NGINX, any FFmpeg process, the content source, and YouTube delivery. Test what happens after a host reboot and after a dropped connection.
- Validate the outbound stream in YouTube. Use Live Control Room’s URL and key, confirm YouTube receives the feed, and check the actual resolution, frame rate, audio, and stream health before relying on it unattended.
YouTube ingest settings that matter
YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, for YouTube Live. Its encoder settings call for constant bitrate (CBR) and recommend a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with a maximum of 4 seconds. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.

- Use the URL and key from Live Control Room. Treat the key as a credential. Select the stream server URL shown for your live setup and keep the key private. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Set CBR and keyframes deliberately. Configure a 2-second keyframe interval where possible; do not exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum. Avoid assuming a relay preserves those settings if an encoder or transcoder changes the stream.
- Choose a supported encoding path. Match the codec and protocol to the encoder or relay you actually use. A protocol or codec listed by YouTube does not mean every Owncast, NGINX, or FFmpeg configuration supports that combination.
- Size bitrate and host resources for the actual workload. The relevant bitrate depends on the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and YouTube’s current settings guidance. No single bitrate or host specification is established here for every feed. Test with your intended source and verify stability.
Plan for resources, bandwidth, and maintenance
Owncast’s documentation warns that conversion work and higher frame rates increase resource demands; offering more output qualities adds processing and bandwidth needs. Configure source quality within what the host can sustain, and test the intended settings rather than treating examples as a performance guarantee. Owncast video documentation
nginx-rtmp can relay a feed, and it can invoke FFmpeg for transcoding. Relaying and transcoding are different workloads: transcoding still consumes host resources, while outbound delivery consumes bandwidth. Estimate the demands of your actual configuration and test it under the intended viewer load. Neither project’s cited documentation establishes comparative capacity or a universal winner.

- Compute: include any conversion, multiple output qualities, or FFmpeg processing, not just the ingest process.
- Operations: plan updates, logs, disk space if recording, service supervision, monitoring, and recovery tests.
- Hardware: Owncast documents ARM64 builds and says Raspberry Pi boards are covered by ARM64 and ARM7 builds. That does not validate a Raspberry Pi 5 for a particular resolution, transcoding workload, audience, or reliability requirement. Size any host against your stream and viewer needs. Owncast installation documentation
Long-running sessions: archive and DVR limits
Do not assume YouTube will archive a single uninterrupted stream in full. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube archive guidance
YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need rewind or you need a complete record, plan for session handling and local recording rather than promising that one indefinitely running session will provide either. YouTube DVR guidance

Copyright and channel policy checks
A technically stable stream does not establish that its content is permitted or eligible for the channel. Before scheduling videos, confirm you have rights to every audio and video element, including music, gameplay footage, and third-party clips. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules for your content and account, and do not treat repetition or an uninterrupted broadcast as an exemption. Policies can change; check YouTube’s current official guidance before going live.
Troubleshooting a 24/7 setup
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast does not receive the encoder feed | RTMP address, path, key, port, or reachability | Verify the server address, /live/ path, configured key, and that the required RTMP port is reachable. Confirm you changed the initial key and are using the current one. |
| Owncast works, but YouTube shows no incoming stream | Missing or failed forwarding hop | Owncast ingest is not, by itself, documented as automatic YouTube forwarding. Check the separate relay/encoder process, YouTube server URL and key, and protocol/codec compatibility. |
| nginx-rtmp receives a feed but does not deliver it to YouTube | Relay configuration or destination credentials | Check the application’s relay settings and the YouTube URL/key from Live Control Room. Inspect service logs and verify the destination is reachable. |
| Stream drops and does not resume | Process supervision or source recovery | Check whether the source, FFmpeg, NGINX/Owncast, or network failed. Configure and test restart behavior for each process; verify the content source can resume rather than merely restarting an empty server. |
| Video quality falls, buffering occurs, or the host struggles | Encoding, conversion load, or bandwidth | Check the actual encoder output and network capacity. Reduce unnecessary conversion or output variants, then test the intended frame rate and quality on the target host. |
| Recording is incomplete after a very long session | YouTube’s long-stream archive behavior | Do not rely on YouTube to archive a session exceeding 12 hours. Keep a local recording and plan session boundaries if a complete archive matters. |
