If your YouTube stream has video but no sound, trace the audio track through the whole pipeline: source, encoder, Nginx RTMP, any FFmpeg relay, YouTube ingest, then playback. The first hop where the audio track is missing is where the fix belongs—Nginx cannot forward audio that never reached it, and a silent player does not by itself prove an ingest problem.
Find the first point where audio disappears
Check each stage in order, using the same test sound throughout. This separates a source or encoder problem from a relay configuration issue or a YouTube playback problem.
- Source: Play the intended audio locally. Confirm the application or operating system has the right input selected, it is not muted, the channel assignment is correct, and the application has device permission.
- Encoder output: Check the encoder’s output status or a local monitoring copy. Confirm an audio track exists and its level moves when sound is produced. If the encoder reports no audio input or produces no track, fix its capture or input selection before troubleshooting Nginx.
- Nginx RTMP ingest and relay: Determine whether the incoming local RTMP stream has audio, then inspect any forwarding configuration or FFmpeg process. Compare the stream before and after the relay if you can.
- YouTube ingest: Run a controlled test and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. If you use the API, check the stream status, health status, and reported configuration issues.
- Playback: If YouTube reports healthy audio but a particular viewer hears silence, test another browser or device and check the player’s mute, volume, and selected audio track.
YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and motion before an event: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends reviewing stream-health messages.
Check the Nginx RTMP and FFmpeg relay
Open the active Nginx RTMP application block and inspect any exec, exec_push, or related FFmpeg command it starts. The exact configuration varies by setup; compare what your command actually receives and sends rather than copying an example unchanged.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Verify the FFmpeg input points to the intended local RTMP stream.
- Check that the command does not disable audio with
-an. - If using explicit stream mapping, confirm it maps the intended audio stream as well as video.
- Confirm the output enables an audio codec supported by YouTube, and check FFmpeg logs for missing-stream, mapping, or encoder errors.
- Use audio copy only if the incoming audio codec and output container are compatible with the next hop. Otherwise, configure an audio encode.
- If the command requests an encoder, confirm your installed FFmpeg build includes it.
The nginx-rtmp module documentation includes FFmpeg examples that explicitly encode audio and video. They illustrate the need to account for both streams; they do not establish what your own configuration is doing.
Match YouTube’s audio format guidance
YouTube’s current guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 as audio codecs. For ordinary stereo, its recommended advanced settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are recommendations, not proof that every different setting causes silence.

| Audio format | YouTube guidance for RTMP/RTMPS |
|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 Kbps bitrate |
| 5.1 surround | AAC only; 48 kHz sample rate; 384 Kbps bitrate |
YouTube states: “Audio codec: AAC or MP3 (5.1 surround sound audio is only supported for AAC in RTMP/RTMPS).” Check the encoder or FFmpeg output settings against the relevant row, but use the track-by-track checks to locate silence rather than assuming a format mismatch is the cause.
Use YouTube stream health to check the destination
In the YouTube Live Control Room, review stream health and its messages during a controlled test. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. A healthy destination-side report, paired with an audible local monitoring copy, helps narrow the issue to playback; a missing or misconfigured audio report means you should return to the earliest pipeline hop that lacks a track.

If you use the YouTube Live Streaming API, inspect the LiveStreams resource’s status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus, and any configuration issue categories it returns. The documented issues include audio bitrate problems. Use the reported issue as a clue instead of guessing: YouTube LiveStreams resource.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you find | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The source itself is silent | Application or operating-system input | Choose the intended device, check mute and channel assignment, and verify permissions. |
| The source has sound, but the encoder has no audio track or level | Encoder capture or output configuration | Correct the selected input and confirm the encoder includes audio in its output. |
| The encoder has audio, but the relayed stream does not | Nginx RTMP forwarding or FFmpeg command | Check input URL, -an, stream mapping, output codec, build support, and runtime logs. |
| The relay has audio, but YouTube reports an audio issue | Output format or YouTube ingest | Check codec, sample rate, bitrate, and the specific Live Control Room or API message. |
| YouTube reports healthy audio, but one viewer hears silence | That playback environment | Compare another browser or device; check volume, mute, and audio-track selection. |
| There are RTMPS connection errors | Transport or endpoint configuration | Verify the RTMPS endpoint, port, and SNI hostname before treating it as an audio-format problem. |
Check RTMPS only when transport errors point there
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transmission. If your encoder is configured to use it and logs show connection failures, verify the ingestion endpoint, port 443, and SNI hostname against YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide. The guide says, “The connection must be made to port 443 on the ingestion server.” Transport trouble can prevent or disrupt ingest, but it does not by itself establish why a stream with video has no audio.
