Ninja Theory developers have begun reporting redundancy notices and job losses after two proposed agreements to transfer the UK studio to new ownership fell through, according to Video Games Chronicle (VGC). Xbox has started consultation on a proposed closure, but has not announced that the studio has shut down. The future of its announced next game, Senua, is also unconfirmed.
What happened to Ninja Theory?
The situation unfolded in stages. On July 6, 2026, Xbox said Ninja Theory had entered terms to join new ownership, with funding intended to complete and grow Senua. On September 22, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty said two separate agreements had fallen through. Xbox said it would begin employee consultation on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths for the studio.

On October 5, VGC reported that developers had publicly said they were facing redundancy or had already lost their jobs. The report was based on employee posts that VGC said it had verified. It identified staff in areas including technical sound, gameplay programming, performance capture, technical direction and art, but did not establish how many positions were affected.
Booty described the change in Xbox’s September statement: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.”

Has Xbox closed Ninja Theory?
No completed closure has been announced in the available statements. Xbox described closure as a proposal and said it would consult employees while continuing to explore alternatives. Consultation, the proposal itself and a completed shutdown are distinct stages; the October employee reports indicate job losses and redundancy risk, not that every employee has been dismissed or that the studio has formally closed.
Are Hellblade developers being laid off?
VGC’s October 5 report says some Ninja Theory developers had reported facing redundancy or already losing their jobs. Those are employee-reported outcomes, and the report does not give a total or establish the final result of the consultation. Gameplay programmer Katrin Mair told VGC: “It’s incredibly sad knowing that we won’t get to finish what we were working on. So much care, talent and effort went into it, and I really wish we’d had the chance to see what it could have become.”

What happens to the new Senua game?
The game’s status has not been officially confirmed in the statements and reporting cited here. Ninja Theory’s game catalog lists Senua as “Releasing TBA.” Its announcement said it was planned for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S and supported gaming handhelds. VGC reported that the project’s fate was uncertain; neither cancellation nor a confirmed change to the release plan has been announced in these sources.

Xbox said the two agreements for Ninja Theory fell through, but did not identify the prospective owners or give a Ninja Theory-specific explanation for why the agreements failed. The financial rationale Xbox provided in July concerned its wider business and content strategy, not a demonstrated cause of the proposed closure at this studio.

In that July statement, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Xbox’s margins were 3–10 times lower than those of comparable platform and publishing businesses and that the company lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year. Those were Xbox’s portfolio-level figures, not measurements of Ninja Theory’s finances. In September, Booty said 268 roles had been eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions; that number was not a Ninja Theory layoff count.
Xbox’s July 6 restructuring announcement also said Compulsion Games and Double Fine would transition to independence, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs had entered terms to join new ownership. In September, Xbox said Undead Labs had transitioned; the two Ninja Theory agreements had not succeeded.
