The best alternative depends on which games you want. For a modern portable device with a curated selection of older Nintendo games, Nintendo Switch Lite can access Nintendo Classics libraries with the required membership. For original DS or 3DS game cards, a used Nintendo 2DS or 3DS-family console is the relevant option: Switch systems do not play those games.
Choose by the games and experience you want
| What matters most | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Playing selected classic Nintendo games on a current portable console | Nintendo Switch Lite with Nintendo Classics | Digital libraries accessed through Nintendo Switch Online memberships; this is not 3DS or DS backward compatibility. |
| Using original DS or DSi game cards | Compatible Nintendo 2DS/3DS-family console | Nintendo says almost all DS and DSi games work, with exceptions for some titles that need a DS Game Boy Advance-slot accessory. |
| Playing 3DS games on their original platform | Compatible Nintendo 3DS-family console | Switch systems do not run original 3DS games, and 3DS eShop purchases are no longer available. |
If you are unsure, start with the game rather than the hardware: identify whether it is a 3DS/DS cartridge or a title in a particular older console library. A subscription catalog is a selection, not a promise that every classic handheld release is included.

Switch Lite: a portable route to selected classic games
Nintendo lists Switch Lite among the systems that can access Nintendo Classics libraries. The catalog spans systems including Game Boy and Game Boy Color, as well as other Nintendo Classics libraries. Access to Game Boy and Game Boy Color games requires Nintendo Switch Online; Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, and Virtual Boy are among the libraries requiring Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. GameCube Classics are available only on Switch 2. Check the current Nintendo Classics library and membership details for the titles and system-specific conditions.
Membership and offline use
Classic games are not a one-time purchase with permanent access: you need an active membership for the relevant library. Nintendo says downloaded classic games can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days, after which an internet connection is needed to verify membership. That makes the service convenient for travel, but less independent than owning a cartridge.

Convenience features and compatibility limits
Nintendo documents features such as suspend points, visual filters, rewind, and multiplayer for compatible games. Availability varies by title, so do not assume every game supports every feature. Nintendo also describes Game Boy Advance titles as reproductions for Switch and Switch 2; performance and presentation can differ from the originals.
Most importantly, Switch Lite is not a 3DS replacement for original software. Nintendo states that Switch systems are not backward compatible with older physical or digital games, and 3DS eShop purchases do not transfer to Switch. See Nintendo’s explanation of 3DS and Wii U eShop transfers.

Used 2DS or 3DS: for original DS and 3DS software
A compatible 2DS/3DS-family console is the practical choice if your priority is playing DS/DSi cartridges or 3DS games on their original platform. Nintendo says almost all DS and DSi games work on 3DS-family systems, but some software that depends on accessories inserted into the DS Game Boy Advance slot is an exception. Nintendo’s backward-compatibility guidance explains the limits.
DS and DSi games display at lower resolution by default on 3DS-family hardware and do not display in 3D. This option preserves access to original cartridges and platform-specific software, rather than providing a modernized catalog with subscription features.

What the eShop and online-service closures mean
Nintendo ended new purchases and downloads of free content from the 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. Previously purchased games and DLC may still be redownloaded, and software updates may still be received, for the foreseeable future; Nintendo does not promise indefinite availability. Online play and other online communication for 3DS-family software ended April 8, 2024. Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation FAQ gives the service details. A used system is therefore a route to compatible physical games and eligible existing downloads, not a way to buy new 3DS eShop games or restore 3DS online multiplayer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide before buying
- Check the format and platform. If the game is a 3DS or DS/DSi cartridge, look for compatible 2DS/3DS-family hardware. If it is a classic from a system represented in Nintendo Classics, check whether that exact game is currently offered.
- Decide whether you need the original cartridge. Switch Classics provides digital access to selected titles; it does not read DS or 3DS cards. A 2DS/3DS-family console is the choice for compatible original DS/DSi or 3DS software.
- Account for membership and connectivity. Match the library to the Nintendo Switch Online tier it requires, and consider the seven-day offline limit and membership verification if you expect to play away from an internet connection.
- Choose original behavior or convenience. Legacy hardware runs compatible software on its intended family of systems. Switch Classics can add features such as rewind or suspend points where supported, but reproductions may differ from originals.
This comparison covers the documented Nintendo options; it does not establish current used-device prices, stock, condition, or repair prospects.
