Nintendo’s Russian eShop is no longer a normal storefront, but this is not a total shutdown of Switch consoles or existing digital libraries. Since May 31, 2023, Nintendo has described the Russian service as limited: existing account holders can redownload digital content they already purchased, while new purchases and new accounts with Russia selected are not part of the documented service.
How the Russian eShop reached limited service
March 2022: purchases stopped
In early 2022, the Russian eShop entered maintenance after the payment service used by the store stopped processing ruble transactions. Nintendo’s initial explanation centered on payment processing; it did not publicly characterize that specific change as a sanctions decision or political boycott. The company also suspended product shipments to Russia. Android Headlines reported the maintenance change on March 4, 2022, and Nintendo later set out its broader Russia policy.
May 31, 2023: Nintendo defined the ongoing service
Nintendo of Europe announced it would wind down its Russian subsidiary and keep the eShop in limited operation to honor existing customer commitments. Nintendo said customers with existing Nintendo Accounts could redownload previously purchased digital content, that new accounts could no longer be created with Russia as the selected country, and that payment details linked to accounts would be deleted for security reasons. Nintendo’s May 31, 2023 notice describes the arrangement as continuing for the foreseeable future, not as a declared permanent closure.
Nintendo’s regional-availability guidance continued to describe Russian eShop access as limited to redownloads when reviewed on August 18, 2026. That is the best-supported current description; the service should not be confused with the temporary maintenance state reported in 2022.

What Russian Switch owners can and can’t do

The redownload promise concerns previously purchased digital content. It is not a promise that every online feature, server, DLC entitlement, or future compatibility will remain available indefinitely. Nintendo’s notice also does not establish that every game update or online multiplayer feature is unavailable. Those services can depend on the title, account, subscription, servers, and required updates.
How to protect access to games already owned
- Keep the original purchasing account. Digital purchases remain associated with the Nintendo Account that bought them; a new account does not inherit that library.
- Sign in with that account to redownload. If a purchased title is missing, first verify which account made the purchase rather than assuming the content was erased.
- Check access before changing account settings. If a redownload fails, contact Nintendo through the digital-product and eShop route in its Russia operations notice.
Redownloading is different from recovering a deleted account, transferring ownership, or restoring purchases made under someone else’s account. The announcement does not promise that one account’s content can be moved to another.

Does the Switch console itself stop working?
Nintendo’s Russian eShop restrictions concern storefront access, payments, account-country settings, and digital distribution; they do not amount to evidence that Switch hardware has been disabled. Nintendo says Switch game cards generally are not region-locked, with an exception for products distributed in the Chinese region. Changing the Nintendo Account country: what to check
Nintendo says the eShop country follows the country setting on the Nintendo Account. A person who genuinely relocates can change that setting; the eShop changes the next time the account connects. Nintendo documents this as an account feature, not as a guaranteed way for a Russian resident to bypass purchasing restrictions. Its guidance is on changing the eShop country.
- Balance: Funds do not carry over between countries. Nintendo requires the balance to be spent or otherwise handled before a country change; see its guidance for country changes blocked by an eShop balance.
- Payment method: A card issued for one region may not work in another region’s eShop. Changing the country alone does not guarantee a successful transaction.
- Content availability: Catalogs vary by country, so a title listed elsewhere may not be offered in the selected eShop.
- DLC matching: Downloadable content must match the region of the game it belongs to. Check the game’s software information before buying regional variants.
- Returning to another country: Consider remaining balance and regional content before making another change; purchases and balances should not be assumed to move between countries or accounts.
Physical games, foreign storefronts, and codes
Physical game cards
Cartridges are generally the least account-dependent way to buy a new Switch game because game cards are generally region-free. Before ordering an import, check its language options, seller and return terms, delivery and customs costs, and whether the game’s DLC region will match. Nintendo’s regional compatibility guidance also notes the intended-region limit on warranty coverage.

Foreign Nintendo Accounts and multiple accounts
A foreign account may expose another region’s store, but Nintendo does not promise that a Russian resident using one can complete purchases. Payment compatibility and regional availability still apply. Some users may keep an existing Russian account for redownloads and maintain a separate account for purchases in a region they can legitimately use, but the accounts do not share ownership automatically. Separate accounts can also complicate library management, parental controls, balances, and DLC matching.

Foreign eShop cards and unofficial payment routes
Nintendo says eShop cards are usable only in the country or region for which they were intended. It warns that it cannot replace, exchange, or refund a card bought for another region. A reseller code can also be wrong-region, already redeemed, or otherwise unusable. No official information cited here establishes that a VPN, payment intermediary, rented account, or reseller reliably restores Russian eShop purchases, so none should be treated as a supported fix.

Where to get help
For a missing redownload or account-specific entitlement issue, use Nintendo’s digital-product and eShop contact route in its Russia operations notice. That notice also lists contacts for physical-product warranty and repair questions. For imported hardware, ask about service eligibility in the product’s intended sales region rather than assuming local warranty coverage.
