Nintendo Music is Nintendo’s official app for streaming selected game soundtracks on iOS and Android. It launched on October 31, 2024, and remains a focused soundtrack service—not a new, standalone Spotify competitor. The app is free to download, but listening requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

What is Nintendo Music?

Nintendo Music is a mobile app for streaming selected music from Nintendo games. It is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play, and access is tied to a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo announced the app’s U.S. and Canadian availability on October 31, 2024, describing its initial catalog as spanning nearly 40 years of Nintendo history. It is an established service, not a newly launching platform. Nintendo’s launch announcement

“Nintendo Spotify” is a handy shorthand, not Nintendo’s official name for the service. Nintendo Music focuses on selected Nintendo game soundtracks and game-related listening features. It is separate from the classic-game libraries included with Nintendo Switch Online, and it is not a general music service for mainstream artists or other game publishers. It also does not replace physical soundtrack releases or give users permanent ownership of downloaded tracks.

Does Nintendo Music cost anything?

The app is free to download, but a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use it. In other words, Nintendo Music is an included membership benefit, not a free standalone streaming tier. Nintendo’s free-use policy

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Nintendo’s October 2024 U.S. launch announcement listed individual membership at $3.99 for one month or $19.99 for 12 months. Those are historical launch-page prices, not verified current August 2026 prices. Check Nintendo’s current regional membership page for the price and terms that apply to your account: Nintendo Switch Online.

If you already subscribe, the relevant question is whether Nintendo’s soundtrack catalog adds value for you. If you would subscribe only for music, compare the current membership cost with the catalog you actually want and with general music services. Nintendo Switch Online also bundles non-music benefits, such as online play and access to classic-game libraries; available benefits depend on membership tier. Nintendo’s announcement of the membership benefits

What music is in the catalog?

Nintendo’s launch material highlighted series including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing and Splatoon. Nintendo says it will add more music, but the service should not be treated as a complete archive: coverage varies by game, and an entry may offer selected tracks or a special release rather than a full soundtrack. The launch announcement names examples, not a guarantee that every game, version or regional release is present. Nintendo’s catalog and feature overview

Before subscribing for one particular soundtrack, search the app or check its current catalog. Confirm that the exact game is listed and that the tracks you want are included. Do not assume that a remake, alternate version, menu theme, battle variation, in-game adaptive cue or special-release album will be there just because another entry from the same series is available.

  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
  • Series examples Nintendo highlighted: Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing and Splatoon.
  • Completeness: Not established across the catalog; check each game entry.
  • Release schedule: Nintendo has said additional music will be added, but the cited announcement gives no fixed cadence.
  • Credits and regional differences: Confirm them on the individual release rather than assuming they are consistent across titles or regions.

How Nintendo Music differs from a general music app

The app’s main distinction is context. Its listening experience is organized around games and Nintendo-related browsing, rather than trying to serve as one broad library for every artist and genre. Nintendo advertises game-based search, playlists, screenshot browsing, recommendations based on Nintendo Switch Play Activity, spoiler filtering and extended playback. Nintendo’s feature list

Game-focused browsing and playlists

Search by game title, track name or playlist, browse using screenshots, and use Nintendo-curated or personal playlists. You can also share personal playlists. These tools make it easier to browse by game or listening context than a service built primarily around general-purpose artist and album discovery.

Spoiler filtering

Spoiler prevention can filter out music associated with possible story moments, which can be useful when listening to a soundtrack before finishing a game. Treat it as a safeguard, not a guarantee: it cannot ensure that every cue is free of story implications.

Extended playback

For selected tracks, Nintendo offers “Extend to…” playback of 15, 30 or 60 minutes. This can suit background listening while studying, working or relaxing, but it extends playback of a selected track; it is not a newly composed long-form version of every piece.

Play Activity recommendations

Recommendations can draw on Nintendo Switch Play Activity, connecting personalization to the Nintendo Account experience. The feature is described in terms of Nintendo Switch play activity; it is not evidence that the app reads listening history from other music services.

Streaming quality and offline listening

Audio quality settings

Nintendo’s support page lists approximate streaming bitrates of 320 kbps for High quality, 192 kbps for Balanced and 64 kbps for Data Saving. Downloaded tracks are fixed at High quality. These settings describe bitrate, not a promise of lossless or hi-res audio; bitrate alone also does not establish the source master, encoding process or volume treatment for every track. Nintendo’s audio-quality support page

Offline downloads

You must download music in advance to listen offline. These are app-controlled subscription downloads, not permanent, DRM-free soundtrack files. Nintendo’s support guidance says downloads can expire after an extended period offline. If an offline track stops playing, connect to the internet and open the app; for support codes 9009-2201 or 9010-2101, Nintendo says to leave the app running for about 30 minutes. On iOS it must stay in the foreground; on Android it may remain in the background. Offline-listening guidance · Nintendo’s recovery instructions for those support codes

Supported devices and regions

Nintendo lists support for iOS 16 or higher and Android 9 or higher. Android devices with 2 GB or less of RAM are not supported. Nintendo also says compatibility is not guaranteed for every device meeting the stated minimums, and it does not support app installations outside Google Play. Supported-device requirements

Nintendo Music is a smart-device app, not an official app for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Windows, macOS, smart TVs or web browsers. You may be able to send your phone’s audio to another device using ordinary Bluetooth or audio output, but that is different from official app support.

Availability depends on region. Nintendo’s support list includes the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, much of Europe, Brazil, South Africa, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Israel, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The list may change; check Nintendo’s current regional availability information before signing up. Nintendo’s region list

Does it work with CarPlay or Android Auto?

Nintendo’s indexed support page says Nintendo Music is not compatible with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Some secondary coverage published in 2026 has reported otherwise, but that conflicts with Nintendo’s support documentation. Unless Nintendo publishes updated first-party compatibility information, do not count on either integration. Listening through a phone’s ordinary Bluetooth audio connection is a separate matter. How to get started

  1. Check eligibility: Confirm that Nintendo Music is available in your region and that your phone meets Nintendo’s device requirements.
  2. Install the app: Download Nintendo Music from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  3. Sign in: Use the Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  4. Confirm membership: If access is denied, check that the account you signed into has a qualifying active membership. Do not assume that another account’s membership applies to the account in the app.
  5. Find your music: Browse or search by game, track or playlist; check that the specific tracks you want appear.
  6. Set up listening: Add music to favorites or playlists, choose streaming quality if data use matters, and download tracks before going offline.
  7. Reconnect periodically: Open the app online if downloaded tracks have expired or need validation.

Common problems and what to try

The app is missing from the store

Check the region tied to your store account and compare your device with Nintendo’s OS and RAM requirements. If both appear eligible, confirm that you are looking for the official app in the appropriate store. Nintendo’s regional list and device page are the authoritative places to check availability and minimum requirements.

Best Value
Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

The app says a membership is required

Make sure you signed in with the Nintendo Account that has the active membership. Check the account’s membership status, then update and reopen the app while connected to the internet. If the correct account has an active membership and access still fails, contact Nintendo support.

Android playback cuts out or has noise

Nintendo lists playback problems on certain Android devices, including some Xperia, Redmi, OPPO and Fujitsu models. Its suggested mitigations include avoiding track downloads while music is playing and reducing the amount of data stored in “My Music.” Nintendo’s Android playback troubleshooting guidance

New tracks do not appear

Reconnect to the internet, restart or refresh the app, and check for an app update. A release may also be staged regionally. Nintendo does not publish a universal release schedule in the cited announcement; contact its support team if the catalog remains stale. Nintendo Music support center

Nintendo Music versus other ways to listen

The right choice depends on whether you want Nintendo-specific features, broad music access or files you can keep. Nintendo Music’s advantage is its official, game-centered experience; it is not a like-for-like replacement for general streaming services or a purchase of permanent soundtrack files.

Option What it suits Key trade-off
Nintendo Music Selected Nintendo soundtracks, game-focused browsing, spoiler filtering and extended playback. Requires paid Nintendo Switch Online; catalog is not established as complete; mobile-app listening rather than broad device support.
Spotify General music listening, broad discovery and playlists across a wider service ecosystem. Nintendo’s specialized catalog and game-context features are not guaranteed; current August 2026 pricing was not verified.
Apple Music General music listening, particularly for users who want an Apple-oriented service workflow. Not Nintendo’s dedicated soundtrack app; current August 2026 pricing was not verified.
YouTube Music Broad music discovery, including recordings, covers and remixes where available. Availability and rights can vary by upload and territory; current August 2026 pricing was not verified.
Bandcamp or direct soundtrack purchases Keeping purchased files when a rights holder offers a soundtrack for sale; some releases may offer lossless downloads. Availability depends on the publisher or artist, and it is not a substitute for Nintendo’s app-exclusive catalog.

Streaming access and ownership are different propositions. Nintendo Music downloads remain app-controlled and may expire after an extended offline period. A purchased soundtrack can be retained independently of a streaming membership when the seller provides downloadable files, but availability and formats vary by release.

Is Nintendo Music worth it?

  • You already have Nintendo Switch Online: It can be a useful added benefit if the games you care about are represented and you mostly listen on a phone.
  • You want a particular Nintendo soundtrack: Check the app’s game entry and track selection first. A series being represented does not prove that your preferred game or its complete score is available.
  • You want one service for all your music: A general-purpose service is a more practical fit for a broad catalog, conventional cross-device listening and non-game artists.
  • You want permanent files or lossless audio: Look for a direct soundtrack purchase where available; Nintendo’s bitrate settings do not establish lossless playback, and its downloads are not permanent ownership.
  • You rely on desktop, web, TV or in-car app support: Nintendo Music’s supported-device information and CarPlay/Android Auto documentation do not establish those official app options.

For game-music fans, Nintendo Music’s real strength is context: it brings selected Nintendo scores together with game browsing, screenshots, spoiler controls and extended loops. It is best understood as a specialized Nintendo Switch Online benefit—not a complete Nintendo soundtrack archive or a general Spotify replacement.
