Nintendo has not publicly announced a blanket ban on generative AI for Switch 2 games. In a 2024 shareholder-meeting Q&A, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa distinguished longstanding AI-like game systems from generative AI, noted intellectual-property concerns, and said the company would respond flexibly as technology develops.
What did Nintendo say about AI?
At Nintendo’s 84th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in 2024, a shareholder asked about the company’s initiatives involving AI. Furukawa’s answer described two different uses of the term: AI-like systems that have long been part of game development, and newer generative AI capable of producing creative material.

He said AI-like technology had been used in games for a long time, including to control enemy-character movement. He separately acknowledged generative AI’s creative potential and identified intellectual-property rights as an issue. His closing point was that Nintendo would respond flexibly to technological developments while continuing to provide value unique to the company that technology alone cannot create. Nintendo’s 2024 AGM Q&A is the primary source for the remarks.
Does this mean Switch 2 games will not use generative AI?
Not based on that statement alone. Furukawa did not name Switch 2, declare a company-wide prohibition, or promise that Nintendo would never use generative AI in game development. The answer expresses caution about IP and emphasizes Nintendo’s distinctive creative value, but also says the company will respond flexibly to technological change.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The stronger claim that Nintendo has “no plans” to use generative AI for Switch 2 games is the framing in BGR’s July 3, 2024 report, not a formal policy announcement in Nintendo’s answer. BGR also says its English rendering of Furukawa’s remarks used Google Translate.
Why the distinction between game AI and generative AI matters
In games, “AI” can refer to systems that govern behavior, such as how enemies move or react. Generative AI is a different category: it can produce creative content. Furukawa’s answer recognizes that game development has used AI-like techniques for years without treating those systems as equivalent to generative tools or their IP questions.

That distinction prevents a common misreading: his acknowledgment of longstanding game AI does not mean Nintendo endorsed generative AI, while his concerns about generative AI do not amount to a rejection of every AI-like system used in games.

- Established: In the 2024 shareholder Q&A, Furukawa said AI-like technology had long been used in games, including for enemy movement.
- Established: He recognized generative AI’s creative capabilities and cited intellectual-property rights as a concern.
- Established: He said Nintendo would respond flexibly to technological development while continuing to offer value that technology alone cannot create.
- Not established: A permanent ban, a current company-wide rule, or a specific policy for every Switch 2 title.
The Q&A documents what Furukawa said at that meeting; it does not establish whether Nintendo’s position changed after 2024.
