Many Nintendo Switch games work on Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is not universal. Before buying a Switch game for the new console, look up the exact title in Nintendo’s compatibility checker and read any notes about controllers, accessories or limited features. A game that starts may still not support every part of its original experience.
Check the exact game before you buy
Compatibility can vary by title, so a general claim that Switch games work on Switch 2 is not enough to confirm a particular purchase. Nintendo advises buyers to search for the specific game and check its status before purchasing. The lookup is subject to further testing and updates, so check it close to the time you buy and again if you are relying on a feature that matters to you.
Nintendo does not publish a single library-wide compatibility percentage in the cited guidance. Use the title-level result rather than assuming a game is supported because it is a Switch release. For third-party games where the behavior is unclear, Nintendo recommends contacting the game’s publisher.
Read compatibility notes as well as the status
“Compatible” does not necessarily mean every mode or accessory works as it did on the original console. Nintendo warns that some games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. In particular, check whether a note refers to the whole game or only to a feature, mode or control method.

Nintendo also names Game Builder Garage, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training and WarioWare: Move It! among games with original Joy-Con or feature-related limitations. The affected function differs by title; consult the checker’s individual note rather than treating every listed game as wholly unplayable.
Confirm which controllers and accessories you need
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 for supported uses, but they cannot attach to the new console. They also need a Nintendo Switch console or a compatible charging grip or stand to charge. Joy-Con 2 cannot substitute for original Joy-Con in accessories that depend on the older controller’s shape or hardware, including some uses of the IR camera.

Before buying, check whether the game relies on motion controls, infrared, a leg strap, Ring-Con, Toy-Con or another physical accessory. If the compatibility note says original Joy-Con are needed for a mode, include both the controller and a way to charge it in your plan.
Know whether the listing is a Switch game, Switch 2 Edition or upgrade pack
Switch 2 supports game cards for compatible Switch software as well as selected Switch 2 Edition releases. Some original Switch games also have a paid upgrade pack, and selected games receive free updates. The additional content varies by title, so compare what the listing actually includes and whether you already own the original game.

For physical purchases, Nintendo identifies Switch 2 exclusive cards (including game-key cards), Switch 2 Edition cards and cards for compatible Switch software. A game-key card is used to download the game over the internet; it does not contain all the game data, and the card must be inserted to launch the downloaded game.
Plan digital games, saves and storage separately
Nintendo’s transfer guidance says digital games can be transferred and redownloaded to Switch 2 after system transfer, along with certain save data. Do not assume every save transfers identically: Nintendo describes the transferred saves as “certain” data, and individual games may have their own save-handling rules.

Nintendo’s virtual game cards represent eShop games and DLC that can be moved between up to two linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. When a virtual game card is loaded on a console, that console’s users can play the content offline. Check the Nintendo Account and console arrangement you intend to use before relying on a transfer or shared library.
A regular microSD card used on the original Switch cannot save or load games or save data on Switch 2. For that use, Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says first use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update and supports cards up to 2 TB. A regular microSD card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch.

Remember that game-card compatibility goes one way
Switch 2 accepts game cards for compatible Switch software. An original Nintendo Switch, however, is only compatible with Switch game cards; Switch 2 exclusive game cards do not work on the older console. Check which console you intend to use before buying a card, especially if you are purchasing a Switch 2-exclusive release.
