Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, so most owners do not need to repurchase their library. Compatibility is not universal, however. Some games have known problems, some require the original Switch Joy-Con or accessories, and some software does not run at all. Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, so this is now an ownership and upgrade guide rather than a pre-release prediction.
At a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Physical Switch game cards | Yes, when the title is compatible |
| Digital Switch purchases | Yes, when tied to the correct Nintendo Account and compatible |

| Keeping the original Switch | Advisable for incompatible software, accessories, charging and backup use |
Nintendo’s official launch announcement lists June 5, 2025 as the release date; the U.S. launch MSRP was $449.99, a historical launch reference rather than a guaranteed 2026 selling price (Nintendo; Associated Press).

How physical Switch games work
Insert a compatible original Nintendo Switch game card into Switch 2’s card slot and launch it normally. The card remains your proof of ownership, so you must keep it inserted whenever you start the game. Inserting it does not automatically convert the game into a Switch 2 Edition, and any improvement depends on that title’s update or upgrade policy. Check Nintendo’s game-by-game database before buying a used card or assuming a favorite will behave identically (Nintendo support).

Redownloading purchases
Link the Nintendo Account that bought the software. Compatible digital games and downloadable content can then be downloaded on Switch 2; account-based eShop funds and services carry across linked systems (Nintendo’s transfer guidance). Ownership still does not guarantee compatibility, so check each title.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Moving save data
Downloading a game and moving its local save are separate tasks. Use Nintendo’s System Transfer process, and verify the correct user profile is linked before resetting or selling the old console. Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves can help where a particular game supports them, but some titles have special transfer rules or no cloud-save support. Test the save on Switch 2 before wiping the original system.
Sharing digital software
Nintendo’s virtual game-card system manages compatible digital games and DLC across linked Switch and Switch 2 consoles, with family-group lending for eligible virtual cards. GameShare is different: Switch 2 can share supported games with another Switch 2 or an original Switch, while an original Switch can only receive supported local shares from Switch 2 (Nintendo support).
What “compatible” actually means
Nintendo does not promise universal backward compatibility. Its live compatibility database (status information originally identified as current on June 5, 2025 and subject to change) separates practical outcomes into these groups:
- Works normally: the game launches and plays as expected.
- Works after a free update: a title update fixes or improves compatibility without a separate software purchase.
- Works with limitations: the game launches but has known issues, restricted modes or requires original Switch controllers and accessories.
- Unsupported: the software cannot be used on Switch 2.
Check the exact regional listing before purchase and revisit it after updates: Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility database. Nintendo also publishes issue details in its compatibility-issues PDF and in-game-issues PDF.
Currently listed examples that do not run
Nintendo’s U.S. list includes Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll and InkyPen. Streaming-app availability and support can vary by country, so treat this as Nintendo’s current regional listing, not a permanent worldwide catalog.
Games that need original Switch Joy-Con
Joy-Con 2 do not reproduce every feature or physical attachment of the original controllers. Nintendo identifies limitations affecting titles and modes including:
- 1-2-Switch and Everybody 1-2-Switch!
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- WarioWare: Move It!
- Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch
- Game Builder Garage
- Ring Fit Adventure
The reasons include the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera, different dimensions and attachment points, and the inability of Joy-Con 2 to fit a Ring-Con, leg strap or certain Labo constructions. Some games remain playable except for particular minigames or modes. Nintendo’s regional compatibility explanation is at Nintendo Philippines.

- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system

Ring Fit Adventure setup
Ring Fit Adventure can be played on Switch 2, but use original Switch Joy-Con: pair them wirelessly, attach them to the Ring-Con and leg strap, and charge them with an original Switch, Joy-Con charging grip or compatible two-way charging stand. Original Joy-Con cannot attach directly to Switch 2 for charging (Nintendo compatibility list).
Free updates versus paid Switch 2 upgrades
| Situation | What you receive |
|---|---|
| Original game with no update | The compatible Switch version as published |
| Original game with a free update | Specified technical or functional improvements at no extra software cost |
| Paid upgrade or Switch 2 Edition | Additional enhancements, content or system-specific features for a title-specific charge |
A compatible original game does not require an enhanced edition merely to launch. Resolution, frame rate, loading and added features vary by publisher and game; consult the individual eShop listing rather than assuming every title receives an automatic boost or that every upgrade has the same price.
Controllers, dock, power and storage
- Original Joy-Con: pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2; retain them for the games above and arrange separate charging.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: can pair wirelessly.
- Original dock: not compatible with Switch 2.
- Original AC adapter: can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot provide Switch 2 TV-mode operation.
- HDMI cable: the original cable is not Nintendo’s recommended choice for maximizing Switch 2 performance.
- Storage: Switch 2 game storage is designed for microSD Express cards, not ordinary Switch microSD cards (Nintendo accessory guidance).
- GameCube Controller Adapter: usable through the Switch 2 dock.
- Grips, straps and charging accessories: several made for original Joy-Con are incompatible with Joy-Con 2.
What happens to Nintendo Switch Online?
Your existing Nintendo Switch Online membership works on linked Switch and Switch 2 consoles. Nintendo Switch 2 adds system-specific benefits, including the GameCube–Nintendo Classics library for Expansion Pack members (Nintendo support). Nintendo’s launch materials described GameChat as free only through March 31, 2026; current subscription requirements and regional terms should be checked on Nintendo’s online service page, rather than treated as permanently free.
Should you keep your original Switch?
Switch 2 can replace the original console for many owners whose important games are confirmed compatible. Keep the original Switch, at least temporarily, if any of these apply:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You use Ring Fit, Labo, IR-dependent software or other attachment-heavy games.
- A favorite title has unresolved compatibility problems.
- You need the old console or a charging accessory to recharge original Joy-Con.
- You are still completing System Transfer or checking saves.
- Your household wants a second system for local multiplayer or separate profiles.
- You want to continue using the original dock or conventional microSD card with the old console.
Check a game before buying Switch 2
- Open Nintendo’s official compatibility database.
- Search the exact game and region.
- Read whether it is normal, update-dependent, limited, controller-dependent or unsupported.
- Open the game’s eShop listing for any free update, paid upgrade and its exact contents.
- Check save-transfer and cloud-save support separately.
- Keep the original console until the game and save have been tested on Switch 2.
This workflow matters most for used physical games, delisted software and titles built around unusual hardware.
Related purchases that may be necessary
- Switch 2 console: compare the current 2026 price; $449.99 was the U.S. launch MSRP.
- microSD Express: choose a card explicitly confirmed for Switch 2; an ordinary microSD is not a drop-in game-storage upgrade.
- Original Joy-Con: useful or required for the accessory-dependent games listed above.
- Joy-Con charging grip or charging stand: useful because original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2.
- Switch 2 camera: sold separately for GameChat and compatible camera features; not needed for ordinary backward-compatible play.
- Switch 2 Edition upgrades: buy only when the title’s added features justify the listed price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use old Switch cartridges on Switch 2?
Yes, insert a compatible card and keep it inserted when launching. Check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility listing first.
Do digital Switch games have to be bought again?
Usually no. Link the purchasing Nintendo Account and redownload compatible software; save transfer is a separate process.

Will every save transfer automatically?
No. Use System Transfer or a supported cloud-save process, then verify each game before resetting the old console.
Can I use old Joy-Con?
They pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2. Original Joy-Con remain important for Ring Fit, Labo and several motion-control games.
Can I use the original Switch dock?
No. The original dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
Can I use my old microSD card for Switch 2 games?
Nintendo designed Switch 2 game storage for microSD Express cards, so a conventional Switch microSD card is not a drop-in solution.
Are Switch 2 Edition upgrades mandatory?
No. A compatible original game can run without the paid enhancement; upgrade contents and pricing vary by title.
Should I sell my original Switch?
Wait until your games, saves and accessories work as expected on Switch 2. Accessory-dependent or unsupported software is a strong reason to keep it.
The Bottom Line
Switch 2 is a practical successor for a compatible Switch library, not a guarantee that every game and accessory carries over unchanged. Verify your specific titles, preserve original Joy-Con and complete save transfer before deciding whether the old console can go.
