Nintendo Switch 2 Die Shot Points to a Custom NVIDIA Tegra T239 Chip

Teardown reporting identifies Switch 2’s custom NVIDIA processor as a Tegra T239 with a reported 12-SM Ampere GPU. Nintendo has not published those chip details, and the process node and RAM configuration remain unconfirmed.

Nintendo officially says Switch 2 uses a “Custom processor made by NVIDIA.” A teardown analysis reported that the chip is NVIDIA’s Tegra T239, with an Ampere-based GPU containing 12 streaming multiprocessors (SMs) and 1,536 CUDA cores. Those model and core-count details are teardown-derived, not specifications Nintendo has published. The die shot supports that identification, but it does not settle the chip’s manufacturing process or the console’s complete memory configuration.

What did the Switch 2 die shot reveal?

TechSpot reported on April 24, 2025, that teardown screenshots published by a hardware modder identified the processor as an NVIDIA Tegra T239. The analysis also attributed an Arm CPU cluster and an Ampere GPU to the chip. Nintendo’s own specification sheet uses the broader description “Custom processor made by NVIDIA,” so the T239 name and detailed architecture should be understood as reported teardown findings rather than an official Nintendo disclosure.

Detail What is established Evidence and qualification
Processor description Custom NVIDIA processor Nintendo’s official specification; it does not name a model.
Chip identification NVIDIA Tegra T239 Reported by TechSpot from teardown screenshots published by a hardware modder on April 24, 2025; not confirmed on Nintendo’s public specification sheet.
Reported CPU One Arm Cortex-X1 high-performance core, three Cortex-A78 performance cores and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores Teardown-derived configuration reported by TechSpot, not a Nintendo-published CPU specification.
Reported GPU Ampere architecture, 12 SMs and 1,536 CUDA cores Teardown-derived details reported by TechSpot; Nintendo has not published these counts.
Memory supplier SK Hynix Identified in TechSpot’s teardown reporting; the exact memory configuration was not confirmed.
Manufacturing process Not established TechSpot said the process node was unconfirmed.

A die shot is an image of the processor’s silicon, not a complete product specification. It can help corroborate a chip identification and show how reported functional blocks are arranged, but it does not by itself establish every commercial configuration or operating characteristic of the console.

How many CUDA cores does Switch 2 have?

The teardown analysis reported 1,536 CUDA cores across 12 GPU SMs. That is the best-supported figure in the cited teardown coverage, but it is not an official Nintendo figure. Treat it as a reported hardware detail, not a specification Nintendo guarantees or publishes.

  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Is the Switch 2 chip 8nm or 5nm?

The cited teardown report does not establish a manufacturing node. TechSpot described the process as unconfirmed, so neither 8nm nor 5nm should be stated as settled fact on the basis of this die-shot reporting. Nintendo’s public specification does not provide a process-node figure either.

How much RAM and storage does Switch 2 have?

RAM

The material identified in TechSpot’s teardown reporting includes SK Hynix memory, but the report did not confirm the exact memory configuration. Nintendo’s public specification page does not state a RAM capacity. The die-shot report therefore does not establish how much RAM Switch 2 has.

Storage

Nintendo lists 256GB of built-in UFS storage. Additional storage requires a compatible microSD Express card, with support listed up to 2TB; Nintendo does not present ordinary microSD cards as an equivalent expansion option.

Does Switch 2 support DLSS and ray tracing?

Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta confirmed DLSS upscaling and hardware ray-tracing capability, according to Tom’s Hardware. That means the hardware can support those graphics techniques; it does not mean every game uses them. Software developers decide whether to implement the features. Dohta also described 4K as an output option, with developers choosing whether to use native resolution or upscaling.

What does the chip mean for the screen and TV output?

Nintendo’s specification lists a 7.9-inch wide-colour-gamut LCD with 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10 support and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120Hz. In handheld and tabletop modes, maximum output is 1920×1080. When docked, the console can output up to 3840×2160 at 60fps, or up to 120fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440.

Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 launch announcement said the improved CPU and GPU enable faster processing, more detailed graphics and faster loading than the original Switch. It also announced support for compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while noting that some games may not be fully supported. The chip identification and core counts alone do not predict how any particular game will perform: results depend on the software and how developers use the hardware.

What are the battery and repair details?

Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours and charging time at approximately three hours when charging in sleep mode. Its specification page lists a 5,172mAh battery for a user-replaceable-battery version and 5,220mAh for a non-user-replaceable-battery version, depending on model and market. Those capacity figures do not turn the battery-life estimate into a guaranteed play time; Nintendo presents battery life as an estimate.

In its June 6, 2025 teardown, iFixit reported that Nintendo had not released Switch 2 repair parts or manuals at that time. That dated finding concerns repair access, not the processor’s architecture, and does not establish whether parts or manuals became available later.
