Depending on the title, that can mean sharper visuals or faster performance, new modes, or substantial extra content. If you already own the Switch game, you can buy its upgrade pack instead of buying the complete Edition again; the Edition’s added features require a Switch 2.
What Nintendo announced—and what the Editions are now
In an August 2025 investor presentation, Nintendo said selected Switch games would receive Editions with “enhanced graphics and gameplay that is unique to Nintendo Switch 2.” The presentation also said owners of the listed Switch games could buy just the upgrade pack. It did not name an individual speaker for that statement. Nintendo’s August 2025 investor presentation describes the announcement; Nintendo’s current product information defines an Edition as a bundle of the original Switch game and its upgrade pack. What the upgrade can change
Display and performance
Higher resolution, improved graphics, HDR, and higher frame rates are among the possible improvements, but they are not promised for every Edition. The display capabilities listed by Nintendo may depend on the TV or other display being used. For Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Nintendo specifies up to 120 fps at 1080p; 4K output is capped at 60 fps. New modes and content
Some upgrades go well beyond a visual enhancement. Kirby and the Forgotten Land adds the Star-Crossed World story, while Super Mario Bros. Wonder adds Meetup in Bellabel Park, with new activities, characters, and co-op features. Other titles, such as the Zelda Editions, are described in terms of performance, resolution, ZELDA NOTES service support, and HDR rather than a comparable new story expansion. The scale and type of change are specific to each game.
Features tied to Switch 2 hardware
Depending on the game, an Edition may use Switch 2 features such as mouse controls, a microphone, a camera, GameShare, or HDR. CameraPlay in Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV and Animal Crossing: New Horizons requires a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately; do not assume an arbitrary camera will work. Nintendo lists each title’s requirements on its Edition pages. Nintendo UK’s Edition list

Do you have to buy the game again?
No. If you own the original Switch game, Nintendo says you can purchase its upgrade pack rather than buy the complete Switch 2 Edition. This applies to physical and digital owners. The original game remains playable on Switch, but the Edition’s extra features and content can only be played on Switch 2. Nintendo UK’s Edition information and Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information
Nintendo identifies Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, and retailers as places to buy upgrade packs. A complete physical or digital Switch 2 Edition is also an option: physical packaging has a Switch 2 logo and additional front-cover information, while a digital title includes “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” in its name. Check the exact product listing to confirm that it includes the upgrade pack you want. Nintendo UK’s Edition information

Can Nintendo Switch Online members get an upgrade free?
Selected Zelda upgrade packs are available to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members at no additional cost, provided the member owns the corresponding original game. Nintendo’s UK list names The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. This is not a blanket benefit for all Switch 2 Edition games; confirm current eligibility and membership terms for your region. Nintendo UK’s Edition information
For one US-specific price example, Nintendo lists the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack at $9.99 when purchased separately. That figure applies to this game in the United States, not to all upgrade packs or regions. Nintendo says a separately purchased upgrade pack is treated as a virtual game card; access through the Expansion Pack membership benefit is limited to active members and is not treated as a virtual game card. Check compatibility before relying on a Switch game
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports Switch games generally, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Backward compatibility does not guarantee that every game or accessory will work completely. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the specific game; for third-party software, Nintendo advises contacting the publisher for details. Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information
