If it is moving but slowly, test the console’s connection before changing Wi-Fi settings. Also check free storage: a full console or card can block a download even when the internet is working.
If the download is stuck or will not start
- On the HOME Menu, check that the console is connected to the internet. If the connection test or download shows an error code, use Nintendo’s guidance for that exact error code.
- Save your game, then close any software that is running. Nintendo Support says some games and software pause downloads while being played, generally to preserve the experience when online features and services are in use. A pause during play does not by itself mean the console is faulty. Nintendo’s stuck-download guidance does not state a publication date.
- From the HOME Menu, select your user page, open User Settings, then choose Update Download Progress.
- If the download still does not resume, restart the console. Wait for it to reconnect to the internet, check progress again, and avoid opening software that may pause the download.
If the download is progressing but slow
Check the console’s measured connection before changing your setup: open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection and note the download and upload speeds. Nintendo’s speed troubleshooting page lists 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as comparison values; it does not present them as typical Switch 2 speeds or a promise of a particular download time. The accessed page does not state a publication date. Nintendo’s internet-connection troubleshooting guide

A large game can take a long time to download depending on the internet connection. Nintendo’s official download information makes that qualification but does not give a general completion-time estimate. Nintendo Switch 2 download information (Japanese)
Improve Wi-Fi before replacing equipment
- During troubleshooting, bring the console within roughly 10–15 feet of the router.
- Move metal objects and nearby electronics that could interfere with the wireless signal.
- If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try the other available band.
- Create a new internet connection on the console, then power-cycle the modem and router.
- Check whether other devices on the same network are using substantial bandwidth. If the connection is slow on those devices too, the issue may be with the network or service rather than the Switch 2.
Compare Wi-Fi with wired internet
For a wired test, the Switch 2 must be docked, with a LAN cable running between the dock and router. Nintendo recommends setting up wireless as well, so the console can connect when it is out of the dock. If a wired connection is already available and tests slowly, power-cycle network equipment and, if possible, try another Ethernet cable to check whether the cable is at fault. A wired test can help identify a Wi-Fi problem; it cannot make an internet service plan faster. Nintendo’s wired-connection setup
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
If there is not enough space for the download
Check the game’s stated capacity and the console’s available space. Switch 2 downloads need enough room in system storage or on a microSD Express card, and update data may require additional space. If storage is the constraint, a compatible microSD Express card can expand capacity; it does not increase internet speed. Nintendo Switch 2 download information (Japanese)

Use the results to find the bottleneck

|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 connection test | Whether the console’s measured connection is slow or reports an error. | For an error, follow Nintendo’s guidance for its code. For low speed, test Wi-Fi placement or wired networking. |
| Another device on the same network | Whether low speed affects more than the console. | If multiple devices are slow, contact your ISP or network administrator. |
| Wi-Fi versus wired while docked | Whether wireless signal or interference may be contributing. | Improve Wi-Fi placement or investigate the wired path, including the cable. |
| Free space versus game and update size | Whether storage capacity is preventing the download or update. | Free space or use compatible microSD Express storage if needed. |
When to contact support
- If the connection test gives an error, follow Nintendo’s support instructions for that code.
- If speeds are low on multiple devices, contact your ISP or network administrator, especially if the service is below the speed in your plan.
- If other devices connect normally and the Switch 2 still cannot download after the steps above, contact Nintendo Support with the error code and connection-test results. Check Nintendo’s current maintenance information before concluding the console itself has a fault.
