Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Explained: How They Work and What to Know

Game-Key Cards hold a download key, not the full game. Here’s what to know about downloads, offline play, storage and using the card on another Switch 2.

A Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card is a physical card that lets you download a game; it does not contain the full game data. Insert it, follow the HOME Menu prompts, and download the game using an internet connection. Once downloaded, you can launch the game offline—but the card must still be inserted.

How a Game-Key Card works

  1. Insert the Game-Key Card into the Nintendo Switch 2. The HOME Menu provides instructions for downloading the game data.
  2. Connect to the internet and download the game to the console’s internal storage or a microSD Express card. You need enough free space; check the card packaging or the game’s digital store page for the title-specific requirement.
  3. After the download, keep the card inserted to play. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed for the first launch, but not for subsequent launches.

The card is therefore a physical license key, not a copy of the full game stored on the card. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview explains the download and storage requirements.

What you need—and what you don’t

  • Internet: Required for the initial download and first launch. Nintendo says later play can be offline.
  • Free storage: Required for the downloaded game data, either in system memory or on a microSD Express card. The amount varies by game; there is no single storage figure that applies to all Game-Key Card releases.
  • The physical card: Required in the console whenever you play, even after downloading the game.
  • Nintendo Account: Not required to download Game-Key Card data, according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ.
  • Save data: Nintendo says save data is stored in the console’s internal storage.

How to tell whether a game uses a Game-Key Card

Switch 2 releases use both regular game cards and Game-Key Cards, so don’t assume every physical release requires a download. Check the individual game’s package or listing. Nintendo UK says a Game-Key Card is identified by a key icon at the top right of the package front; the packaging also provides Game-Key Card information. See Nintendo’s Game-Key Cards page.

Game-Key Card vs. regular game card

What to compare Game-Key Card Regular game card
Full game data on the physical card No; the card provides a key to download the data. Nintendo’s guidance does not establish details for every regular-card release; check the specific game’s packaging.
Download and storage Initial download required, with sufficient free system or microSD Express storage. Requirements vary by release; check its packaging or store listing.
Internet for later play Nintendo says subsequent play can be offline. Not stated as a general rule in Nintendo’s Game-Key Card guidance.
Card needed to play Yes; it must remain inserted. Not stated as a general rule in Nintendo’s Game-Key Card guidance.

Can you use one on another Switch 2?

Yes. Nintendo UK says you can insert the Game-Key Card in another Switch 2 and follow the same download steps. That console needs an internet connection for its initial setup/download and enough free storage for the game data.

How it differs from a virtual game card

A Game-Key Card is a physical card that must be inserted to play. Nintendo describes virtual game cards separately as a way to digitally load and eject digital purchases; they are not the same format. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ covers both terms.

Why Nintendo introduced the format

At Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in 2025, president Shuntaro Furukawa said Game-Key Cards were introduced to accommodate larger game data sizes on Switch 2 than on Switch. That is Nintendo’s stated rationale; it does not mean every Switch 2 game uses this format. In the English translation of the company’s Q&A summary, Q16, Furukawa said: “This is one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.”
