The Nintendo Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch screen, matching the estimate Ars Technica made from its January 2025 reveal trailer. Ars also estimated that the console’s tablet footprint is about 33% larger than the original Switch’s—but that figure remains a visual estimate, not an official Nintendo measurement.
How big is the Switch 2 screen?
Nintendo’s specifications for the released Switch 2 list a 7.9-inch diagonal touchscreen. That is the same size Ars Technica estimated from reveal-trailer images in January 2025; Nintendo later confirmed the screen diagonal in its official technical specifications.
The 7.9-inch figure is the screen’s diagonal, not the width or height of the console. It is larger than both earlier Switch models in Ars’s comparison:

Diagonal size alone does not describe how much space a console occupies as a tablet. Ars’s separate 33% comparison refers to estimated overall footprint area, not a 33% increase in screen diagonal.

What are the Switch 2 display specifications?
Nintendo lists the released system’s display as a 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen with a wide color gamut and 1920 × 1080 resolution. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 launch announcement also specifies HDR10 support and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. These are distinct display characteristics: panel type, resolution, color range, HDR support and refresh-rate capability.
In its June 2025 review, Ars Technica likewise described the retail system as having a 7.9-inch, 1080p screen with HDR and variable refresh rates up to 120 Hz. The review aligns with Nintendo’s published specifications; it does not change the status of the separate tablet-footprint estimate.

How did Ars estimate the size from the trailer?
In its January 17, 2025 analysis, Kyle Orland of Ars Technica used head-on frames from Nintendo’s reveal trailer. The article measured the hardware in pixels and scaled the new console using the known dimensions of the original Joy-Con controllers: 102 × 35.9 mm. That scale let Ars estimate the tablet and screen dimensions from the images.
Because the method depended on trailer imagery and pixel measurements, Ars presented the resulting dimensions as estimates. The estimated 7.9-inch screen was subsequently corroborated by Nintendo’s official specification. Ars’s roughly 33% larger-footprint figure was not confirmed in the Nintendo materials cited here, so it should be understood as Ars’s pre-release estimate rather than a manufacturer specification.

What does “33% bigger tablet surface” mean?
Ars’s figure compares the estimated total area of the Switch 2 tablet with the original Switch tablet. It does not mean the Switch 2 screen is 33% larger diagonally, nor does it describe a Nintendo-published dimension. Screen diagonal and tablet footprint measure different things: the former is the distance across the display, while the latter concerns the area occupied by the full tablet body.
For a confirmed specification, use Nintendo’s 7.9-inch screen diagonal. For the 33% footprint comparison, retain the attribution and qualification: it is Ars’s estimate based on the reveal trailer.
