Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the system as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go,” building on eight years of Nintendo Switch play and discovery.
Joy-Con 2’s magnetic attachment
Joy-Con 2 uses strong magnetic connectors to hold each controller to the console. To remove one, press the release button on the back and pull it away. Nintendo Support says the magnets will not damage the Switch 2’s LCD screen.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The controllers can still be used in the familiar handheld, tabletop and detached-controller arrangements. The package includes a grip and two straps; straps are optional when using a Joy-Con 2 as a mouse, although some games may require them and Nintendo says they can improve comfort.
How Joy-Con 2 mouse control works
Each controller has a side sensor
A sensor on the side of each Joy-Con 2 lets it operate like a mouse when the game or application implements mouse input. Both the left and right controllers can be used as mice at the same time.
Support depends on the software
Mouse control is not a system-wide feature that every game must support. Nintendo’s launch material identified compatible experiences such as Hogwarts Legacy and BRAVELY DEFAULT FLYING FAIRY HD Remaster, but support should be checked for each title because the list can change.
Nintendo Support also says mouse controls can navigate the Switch 2 HOME Menu and work in applications including Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch Online.
Use a suitable surface
Nintendo recommends a desk, table or similarly flat surface. Responsiveness can vary with the surface, so a couch, uneven lap or reflective material may not behave like a conventional mouse pad. The company does not promise identical tracking on every surface.

Screen, modes and TV output
Handheld display
The built-in LCD measures 7.9 inches and displays 1920×1080 resolution (1080p), according to Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 launch announcement.
TV-mode conditions matter
Nintendo describes TV output of up to 4K at up to 60 frames per second, with HDR and other capabilities dependent on the game and compatible display. These are maximum supported specifications, not a guarantee that every game renders at 4K or 60 fps.
Nintendo says TV-mode variable refresh rate (VRR) support was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. A compatible game, display and appropriate settings are still required.
Stand adjustment
The built-in stand offers 150 degrees of freedom for tabletop positioning.
Games, storage and compatibility
Original Switch games
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo cautions that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible, so backward compatibility is a game-by-game question rather than a blanket guarantee.

Internal and expandable storage

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery and charging
Nintendo Support lists approximately 3.5 hours for a Joy-Con 2 controller to fully charge. It rates battery life at up to 20 hours of continuous use, with actual duration varying by software and player actions. Those figures apply to Nintendo’s stated conditions and are not independent laboratory benchmarks.
GameChat and the optional camera
GameChat provides voice chat and screen sharing. Video chat requires a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or a compatible USB-C camera. The Switch 2 Camera is sold separately and is not part of the listed console contents.
Nintendo’s current feature information says online functions, including GameChat, require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership under the listed terms. Country restrictions and service terms may apply.
How to evaluate Switch 2 for your setup
- Play style: decide whether you need handheld, tabletop and TV modes or mainly one mode.
- Display: compare the 1080p handheld screen with the conditional 4K, HDR and VRR capabilities in TV mode.
- Game library: verify compatibility for your existing Switch games individually.
- Mouse use: check whether the games you play support Joy-Con 2 mouse input; the hardware alone does not add mouse controls to every title.
- Storage: budget for a microSD Express card if 256GB is not enough.
- Online features: include Nintendo Switch Online and, for video chat, a separate camera or compatible USB-C camera.
Nintendo’s official information establishes the hardware features and requirements above, but it does not provide an independent performance benchmark, comparative test result, market-share figure or sales total. Those claims should not be inferred from the specifications.
