When did Best Buy open for the Switch 2 launch?
Best Buy said nearly all its US stores would open at 12:01 a.m. ET on June 5, 2025, for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases. The retailer described walk-in console, game, and accessory inventory as limited, and the plan was not a guarantee that every location would have stock. GameStop advertised an event beginning at 3 p.m. local time on June 4, with console pickups starting at 12 a.m. ET / 9 p.m. PT. It said additional units would be available in stores and online while supplies lasted. How did other US retailers handle launch availability?
Retailers did not follow one national opening schedule. The contemporaneous launch roundup reported these arrangements; hours and inventory could differ by store.

These retailer arrangements were reported by Axios on June 4, 2025. In particular, “midnight” did not mean the same local clock time for every retailer or store: GameStop stated both Eastern and Pacific times, while Walmart’s plan mixed an Eastern online start, some time-zone-specific Supercenter sales, and 6 a.m. local openings elsewhere.
Could you buy a Switch 2 without a preorder?
Yes, some retailers announced walk-in or additional in-store units, but availability was limited and not assured. Best Buy explicitly included walk-in purchases in its plan; GameStop advertised additional in-store units while supplies lasted. Target used store tickets to reserve products for purchase. Those plans offered possible routes for people without preorders, not a promise that a particular branch would have a console when they arrived.

That caution mattered: the Associated Press reported preorder delays, errors, listings that became unavailable quickly, and some cancellations. Nintendo also said My Nintendo Store orders were not guaranteed to arrive on June 5 and pointed customers seeking launch-day access toward participating retailers.
