Nintendo Switch 2 is a released console, not an upcoming rumor. Nintendo first showed the successor on January 16, 2025, revealed its full specifications, price, features, and software on April 2, and launched it worldwide on June 5, 2025.

In the United States, the launch and current listed MSRP is $449.99 as of August 10, 2026, although Nintendo has announced that the system price will rise to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. The main upgrade is a larger, more powerful hybrid system with a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD, 256GB of storage, magnetic mouse-capable Joy-Con 2 controllers, GameChat, GameShare, and compatibility with compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.

Current status: This is an updated recap through August 10, 2026. It separates Nintendo’s January teaser from the April Direct, distinguishes launch titles from later announcements, and labels prices by date.

What Nintendo revealed in January 2025

Nintendo’s January 16 video confirmed the existence of Nintendo Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch and showed the larger console, redesigned controllers, magnetic Joy-Con attachment, and early footage of a new Mario Kart game.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

It also confirmed that Switch 2 would play physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while warning that some games might not be supported or might not be fully compatible. That was the extent of the major information at this stage. Nintendo had not yet announced the exact release date, U.S. price, screen resolution, storage capacity, battery estimate, CPU or GPU details, or a complete compatibility list.

The January footage also did not establish the final name or complete feature set of the racing game. Nintendo confirmed Mario Kart World and its launch details during the April presentation.

What the April 2 Direct confirmed

The April Direct supplied the information missing from the teaser: a June 5, 2025 launch, U.S. pricing, hardware specifications, Joy-Con 2 features, GameChat, GameShare, virtual game cards, Switch 2 Edition upgrades, Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics, and a broad launch and post-launch software lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hardware is a larger, higher-resolution hybrid system

Switch 2 remains a handheld, tabletop, and TV console, but it increases the handheld display from the original Switch family’s 6.2-inch screen to 7.9 inches. The display is an LCD rather than an OLED panel. It runs at 1920×1080, supports HDR10, and supports variable refresh rate up to 120Hz in handheld and tabletop modes when the game and display support those features.

The console uses a custom NVIDIA processor and has 256GB of UFS internal storage. Nintendo’s public specification page does not provide conventional CPU and GPU model numbers or a simple teraflops figure, so claims such as a precise power multiplier should not be treated as Nintendo-confirmed specifications. See Nintendo’s complete technical specifications.

TV output is conditional, not universal 4K gaming

Switch 2 can output up to 3840×2160 at 60fps to a compatible TV in compatible games. It can also output up to 120fps at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440. These are maximum output capabilities, not guarantees that every game renders natively at 4K, runs at 120fps, or supports HDR and VRR.

  • 4K: up to 4K TV output, capped at 60fps.
  • 120fps: available at 1080p or 1440p in compatible games and setups.
  • VRR: Nintendo lists it for handheld and tabletop play rather than as a universal TV-mode feature.
  • HDR: depends on the game, display, and mode.

Full technical specifications

Specification Nintendo’s confirmed detail
Display 7.9-inch wide-color-gamut LCD
Resolution 1920×1080
HDR HDR10 support
Refresh features VRR up to 120Hz in handheld and tabletop modes
Processor Custom NVIDIA processor
Internal storage 256GB UFS, with some capacity reserved for system use
Wireless Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth
TV output Up to 3840×2160 at 60fps in compatible games
High-frame-rate output Up to 120fps at 1080p or 1440p
Battery 5220mAh lithium-ion battery
Estimated battery life Approximately 2–6.5 hours
Estimated charging time Approximately three hours in sleep mode
Game cards Reads Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch game cards
Expandable storage microSD Express only, up to 2TB
USB-C Two USB-C ports, one on top and one on the bottom
Audio 3.5mm four-contact stereo jack
Microphone Built-in monaural microphone with noise and echo cancellation
Weight Approximately 0.88lb without Joy-Con 2, or 1.18lb with controllers attached

The 2–6.5-hour battery estimate is a broad official range, not guaranteed runtime. A demanding game, screen brightness, wireless features, and other settings can change actual battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joy-Con 2: magnetic controllers with mouse controls

Joy-Con 2 attach to the console magnetically instead of using the original rail system. Both controllers include mouse sensors, allowing them to operate as mouse controllers in compatible games. Some software can use both Joy-Con 2 controllers as mice at the same time, opening up control schemes for strategy, simulation, shooting, and other games.

Other confirmed changes include:

  • HD Rumble 2.
  • Accelerometer and gyroscope in both controllers.
  • A C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 for opening GameChat.
  • Larger dimensions than the original Joy-Con.
  • Approximately 20 hours of controller battery life.
  • Approximately 3.5 hours to recharge.

There is an important compatibility trade-off: Joy-Con 2 does not include the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera. Games and accessories that depend on that sensor may require an original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con connected wirelessly. Nintendo specifically lists limitations involving 1-2-Switch, Game Builder Garage, WarioWare: Move It!, Nintendo Switch Sports, Ring Fit Adventure, and Nintendo Labo products. The full title-by-title information is in Nintendo’s compatibility database.

The dock adds a built-in wired LAN port

The included Switch 2 dock has HDMI output, a wired LAN port, two side USB ports, an AC adapter port, and the system connector. The wired LAN port is built into the dock, unlike the dock supplied with the original launch Switch.

What comes in the box

The standard U.S. package includes:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console.
  • Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers.
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip.
  • Joy-Con 2 Straps.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock.
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter.
  • USB-C charging cable.

It does not include Mario Kart World unless the buyer chooses the bundle. It also does not include Nintendo Switch Online, a Switch 2 Camera, a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, a Pro Controller, a microSD Express card, or Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GameChat: voice, screen sharing, and video chat

GameChat is Switch 2’s integrated communication feature. Pressing the C Button opens it, although it can also be accessed through the HOME Menu. Players can chat while playing the same game, different games, or no game at all.

  • Voice chat supports up to 12 people.
  • Screen sharing supports up to four people simultaneously.
  • Video chat supports up to four people when a compatible USB camera is connected.
  • The console’s built-in microphone provides voice chat without a separate headset.
  • GameChat can be used while players are in different games or outside a game.

GameChat was temporarily available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership from June 5, 2025 through March 31, 2026. That open-access period has ended. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is now required. Nintendo’s current GameChat guide documents the requirement.

The camera is optional

The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is sold separately. Other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility. To test a connected camera, open HOME Menu → System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test USB Camera.

Up to four people can appear in video chat. In compatible games, CameraPlay can also put camera images or motion-controlled participants into gameplay. Parents should note that children under 16 require parent or guardian approval to use GameChat. The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app can manage GameChat participation and video-chat access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GameShare is useful, but it is not universal game sharing

GameShare allows a Nintendo Switch 2 host to share supported software with other consoles. It is title-dependent, so one digital or physical copy does not automatically let everyone play every game.

  • The host must be using Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Local-wireless guests can use either Switch 2 or original Nintendo Switch hardware.
  • Internet-based GameShare guests must use Switch 2.
  • The host needs a game that specifically supports GameShare.
  • The original Switch cannot initiate a GameShare session.
  • Switch 2-exclusive software cannot be shared to the original Switch.

These requirements are summarized in Nintendo’s GameShare overview and FAQ.

Virtual game cards change how digital purchases move between consoles

Digital purchases are represented as virtual game cards. A player can eject a digital game from one console and load it on another, then use the loaded virtual game card offline. Other users on that console can also play the loaded game.

Virtual game cards can be loaded on up to two paired systems. Nintendo Account family-group members can lend a game for up to 14 days. However, the same software cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems through the virtual game-card system, and moving the card does not move the save data. Save data remains on the original console unless it is separately transferred or restored through the applicable Nintendo system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatible original Nintendo Switch games can use virtual game cards across a Switch 2 and an original Switch. A Switch 2-exclusive title cannot be lent to an original Switch. Nintendo’s virtual game card guide explains the loading, lending, and pairing rules.

Game-key cards are not ordinary physical game cards

Some boxed Switch 2 releases use game-key cards. These cards contain a license key rather than the complete game data. The first time a game-key card is used, the player must:

  1. Insert the game-key card.
  2. Connect the console to the internet.
  3. Download the game data.
  4. Keep the game-key card inserted whenever the game is played.

This matters to buyers with slow, capped, or unreliable internet connections. A box labeled as a physical Switch 2 release does not necessarily mean the entire game is stored on the card. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ identifies the relevant release and licensing rules.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Accessibility features

Nintendo Switch 2 includes more system-level accessibility options than a simple hardware-refresh description would suggest. Nintendo has documented adjustable font size, a screen reader, speech-to-text features in GameChat, and text-to-speech and speech or text controls that have expanded through system updates. These options are particularly relevant to players who need larger text, reading assistance, or an alternative to spoken communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because accessibility support can differ by game, the console features should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every Switch 2 title supports every option. Nintendo’s system update history records changes added after launch.

Backward compatibility: what carries over and what does not

Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. That is useful for existing owners, but it is not the same as a guarantee that every Switch game, application, controller, or accessory works without limitations.

Physical and digital games

Original Nintendo Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2, and compatible digital purchases can be transferred or redownloaded using the relevant Nintendo Account. Nintendo maintains a game-by-game compatibility list because some titles do not launch, have in-game problems, require original controllers, or lose features.

Controllers and accessories

Original Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can generally connect wirelessly to Switch 2. They cannot attach magnetically to the new console, cannot provide Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, and cannot wake Switch 2 from sleep with the HOME button. Some Switch 2-exclusive games may require Joy-Con 2 features.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Original Joy-Con may still be the correct controllers for certain backward-compatible games because of the missing IR Motion Camera. Nintendo Labo also has physical-fit limitations: some Toy-Con products do not work correctly with Switch 2, and the Switch 2 console cannot be used inside certain Toy-Con constructions.

Applications that are unavailable

Nintendo’s compatibility page lists several original Switch applications as unavailable on Switch 2, including Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen. Application support can change, so readers should check Nintendo’s live compatibility page before buying Switch 2 specifically for a service or accessory.

System transfers are not the same as moving a game card

A system transfer can move Nintendo Accounts, purchased digital games, certain save data, parental-control settings, and other system settings. It requires an internet connection and at least one user profile linked to a Nintendo Account on the original Switch.

Do not assume that a full system transfer, an individual save-data transfer, cloud backup, redownloading a game, and moving a virtual game card are identical actions. Before erasing or selling an old Switch, verify that user profiles, saves, screenshots, digital purchases, and any games with unusual save systems are present on the new console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch 2 Edition upgrades: three different ways old games can improve

Existing Switch games can fall into three separate categories:

  1. Ordinary backward compatibility: the original Switch version runs on Switch 2 without a separate Switch 2 Edition upgrade.
  2. Free update: the developer improves performance or adds selected Switch 2 functionality without charging for an upgrade pack.
  3. Paid upgrade pack or Switch 2 Edition: the owner buys additional enhancements, features, modes, or content.

A Switch 2 Edition generally includes the original Switch game plus the upgrade pack. The original version remains playable on original Switch, but the Switch 2-specific enhancements are available only on Switch 2. Nintendo’s upgrade-pack guide explains the purchase rules.

Nintendo announced Switch 2 Edition upgrades for:

  • Super Mario Party Jamboree.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Third-party games announced in the April Direct

Nintendo’s April presentation included the following third-party announcements. The list is an announcement record, not a launch list. A title shown with a 2025 window, 2026 window, or no date should not be described as a June 5 launch game without separate confirmation.

Action, RPG, and adventure: ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition; Hades II; DAEMON X MACHINA: Titanic Scion; Hogwarts Legacy; HITMAN World of Assassination – Signature Edition; Project 007; Borderlands 4; Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition; Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade; Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess; Hollow Knight: Silksong; Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar; Goodnight Universe; Witchbrook; Wild Hearts S; Shadow Labyrinth; RAIDOU Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army; Reanimal; Star Wars Outlaws; and MARVEL Cosmic Invasion.

Other confirmed announcements: Split Fiction; Fortnite; and the remaining titles listed in Nintendo’s April Direct archive. Nintendo Life also maintains a useful announcement-by-announcement breakdown, but dates and availability should be checked against Nintendo or the relevant publisher.

Some of these games were launch releases, including Street Fighter 6, Split Fiction, Hogwarts Legacy, HITMAN World of Assassination – Signature Edition, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster, Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Survival Kids, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, Fast Fusion, Fortnite, and Arcade Archives 2: Ridge Racer. What was actually available at launch?

Nintendo’s June 5 launch-day summary said more than 20 titles were available, counting first-party games, third-party releases, enhanced Switch games, and digital software. The launch group included:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mario Kart World.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour.
  • Street Fighter 6.
  • Split Fiction.
  • Hogwarts Legacy.

  • Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster.
  • Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.
  • Civilization VII – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
  • Survival Kids.
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S.
  • Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma.
  • Fast Fusion.
  • Fortnite.
  • Arcade Archives 2: Ridge Racer.
  • Selected Switch 2 Edition upgrades and additional third-party and digital releases.

The complete launch context is in Nintendo’s launch-day software announcement. The safer way to read the April Direct is that it announced a pipeline of games, not that every game shown was available on June 5.

U.S. prices and the real cost of upgrading

Console pricing

  • Launch MSRP: Nintendo Switch 2 was $449.99.
  • Launch bundle: Switch 2 with Mario Kart World was $499.99.
  • As of August 10, 2026: Nintendo of America still lists the system at $449.99 MSRP.
  • From September 1, 2026: Nintendo has announced that the U.S. system MSRP will increase to $499.99.

The August price is therefore a dated current price, not a promise that $449.99 will remain permanent. Retailer prices and promotions can differ from MSRP. The price-revision announcement is available on Nintendo’s website.

Launch-era U.S. accessory and game prices

Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 U.S. pricing announcement listed these launch-era MSRPs. They should not automatically be treated as unchanged August 2026 prices:

Product Launch-era U.S. MSRP
Mario Kart World $79.99
Donkey Kong Bananza $69.99
Switch 2 Pro Controller $84.99
Joy-Con 2 pair $94.99
Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip $39.99
Nintendo Switch 2 Camera $54.99
Switch 2 Dock Set $119.99
Switch 2 Carrying Case and Screen Protector $39.99
Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case $84.99
Samsung 256GB microSD Express card $59.99

The console includes a basic grip, so the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is optional. A Pro Controller, camera, carrying case, extra Joy-Con pair, and storage card are also optional. Nintendo Switch Online is not included. A buyer who wants GameChat after March 31, 2026 must add a membership, though the exact price depends on region, plan, and current Nintendo pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo also announced that, beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published Switch 2-exclusive digital titles would use a different MSRP from their physical versions. Buyers should compare the digital and physical listings rather than assume they have identical prices. See Nintendo’s game-pricing notice.

Storage is a bigger issue than the 256GB number suggests

Switch 2 includes 256GB of internal UFS storage, but the usable amount is lower because system data occupies part of it. Expandable storage requires microSD Express cards, up to 2TB.

Ordinary microSD cards used with the original Switch cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo says existing ordinary cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from Switch. This means an existing Switch owner may need to buy a new Express card, especially if they purchase large digital games or game-key-card releases.

Game-key cards can make storage even more important because the card may only contain the license key while the complete game data must be downloaded to the console or microSD Express card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Nintendo did not promise

Several common descriptions of Switch 2 go beyond Nintendo’s confirmed information:

  • It is not a universal native-4K gaming console. The official claim is up to 4K TV output in compatible games.
  • Not every game supports HDR, VRR, 120fps, mouse controls, or the same resolution modes.
  • Nintendo did not publish a conventional CPU/GPU model breakdown or a simple teraflops figure on its official specifications page.
  • Backward compatibility is not universal. Some games, applications, accessories, and features have exceptions.
  • The system does not include a built-in camera for video chat. The Switch 2 Camera is sold separately.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is not a free pack-in title.
  • The system uses an LCD, not an OLED display.
  • GameShare does not work with every game.
  • Not every physical release contains the complete game; some use game-key cards.
  • GameChat is not permanently free; Nintendo Switch Online is now required.

Is Nintendo Switch 2 worth upgrading to?

There is no single answer for every Switch owner. The decision depends on which improvements matter more than the price, accessory requirements, and compatibility exceptions.

Upgrade now if you value:

  • New Nintendo-published Switch 2 exclusives such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
  • Better performance and enhanced visuals in supported Switch games.
  • A larger 1080p handheld screen.
  • Faster storage and loading.
  • Mouse controls for strategy, simulation, shooter, and selected adventure games.
  • GameChat, screen sharing, and CameraPlay.
  • GameCube classics through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
  • Keeping access to a large compatible Switch library while moving to new hardware.

Keep the original Switch or wait if you mainly want:

  • An OLED display with deeper blacks; Switch 2 uses LCD.
  • Maximum battery life. Nintendo’s Switch 2 estimate is approximately 2–6.5 hours and varies by game.
  • Complete compatibility with every original Switch game, application, controller, and Toy-Con accessory.
  • To keep using an ordinary microSD card for game storage.
  • A camera included in the box.
  • A free pack-in tutorial.
  • Online communication without a Nintendo Switch Online requirement.

For families, the practical budget is more than the console alone: consider at least the games you actually want, Nintendo Switch Online for GameChat, a microSD Express card for a digital-heavy library, and a camera only if video chat is important. Existing controllers can reduce the cost, but they cannot provide every Joy-Con 2 feature and may be required for certain older games.

Post-launch status update

Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units and 48.71 million Switch 2 software units sold worldwide as of March 31, 2026. Those figures describe Nintendo’s reported period and should not be presented as a live sales total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo’s U.S. support page lists system software version 22.5.0, released June 15, 2026, as the latest version in the supplied update record. GameChat’s temporary free period ended March 31, 2026, and the U.S. console price is scheduled to rise on September 1, 2026.

For games announced with a broad window such as 2025, winter 2025, or 2026, the most reliable current reference is Nintendo’s official Switch 2 game directory together with the individual publisher’s page. Announcement status and release status are not interchangeable, especially for titles that were shown without a firm date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Nintendo Switch 2 play every original Nintendo Switch game?

No. It plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo lists title-specific exceptions. Some games have launch or gameplay problems, some require original Joy-Con because Joy-Con 2 lacks the IR Motion Camera, and several applications and Nintendo Labo products are unavailable or limited.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera included?

No. The camera is sold separately. GameChat voice chat and screen sharing work without a camera, but video chat and CameraPlay require a compatible USB camera. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Camera is the officially supported option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an ordinary microSD card from the original Switch be used for Switch 2 games?

No. Switch 2 game storage requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says an ordinary microSD card from the original Switch can be used to copy screenshots and videos, but not to store Switch 2 games.

What is a Switch 2 game-key card?

A game-key card contains a license key rather than the complete game. The first use requires an internet connection and a download, and the card must remain inserted whenever the game is played.

The Bottom Line

The confirmed picture is straightforward: Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025 at a $449.99 U.S. MSRP, with a larger 1080p LCD, substantially expanded storage, stronger hardware, magnetic mouse-capable Joy-Con 2, GameChat, GameShare, and compatible Switch game support. The important qualifications are just as practical: 4K and 120fps are game- and mode-dependent, backward compatibility has real exceptions, the camera and storage card cost extra, game-key cards may require large downloads, and GameChat now requires Nintendo Switch Online. For U.S. buyers, the $449.99 price is scheduled to become $499.99 on September 1, 2026.
