Nintendo Switch 2 Reviews: What Critics Love—and What They Don’t

Critics see the Switch 2 as a meaningful hybrid-console upgrade, especially for original Switch owners—but battery life, LCD contrast and comfort complicate the choice.

Reviews describe the Nintendo Switch 2 as a substantial refinement of the hybrid-console idea: it has a larger, sharper screen, more performance headroom in supported games, and a deep library of compatible original Switch titles. Its biggest tradeoffs are short battery life in demanding games, an LCD screen rather than OLED, and comfort concerns for some handheld players. Whether it is worth buying depends on which Switch you own, how often you play on the go, and whether the current games appeal to you.

What do reviewers like about the Switch 2?

A bigger, sharper handheld screen

The Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution, according to Nintendo’s official launch announcement. Reviewers generally see it as a clear visual step up from the original Switch. Ars Technica also highlights the panel’s brightness and 120 Hz capability, while noting that it cannot match OLED’s deep blacks. The larger display is likely to feel like the most immediate upgrade for original Switch owners, especially those who skipped the OLED model.

More performance in games that use it

Ars Technica and the Associated Press report sharper visuals and smoother performance in demanding or upgraded games. That improvement is not identical across the whole library: it depends on the game and whether it has been updated or otherwise benefits from the newer hardware. The practical gain is most apparent in titles where the original Switch’s image quality or frame rate felt limiting.

A substantial compatible game library

Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, giving existing owners a large library to carry forward. Compatibility is not universal: some titles may be unsupported or may not work fully. Nintendo Life also notes that some older games benefit from improvements on the new system. For current Switch owners, that back catalog is a meaningful part of the upgrade’s value—not just a convenience while waiting for new releases.

  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld

  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Joy-Con 2 and social features add options

The Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can function as a mouse in compatible games. That gives developers another way to handle aiming or pointer-style interaction, though it is a feature for particular games rather than a universal replacement for sticks and buttons. GameChat uses the console’s built-in microphone for voice chat. Video chat requires a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately, as Nintendo explains in its Switch 2 overview.

What do reviewers dislike about the Switch 2?

Battery life is the main portable-play compromise

Nintendo estimates 2–6.5 hours of battery life, depending on the game and usage conditions, on its UK specifications page. That broad range matters: it is not a promise of a fixed runtime. Ars Technica reported roughly 2–2.5 hours in its review while playing demanding games such as Mario Kart World or Cyberpunk 2077. Nintendo Life’s testing fell within Nintendo’s stated range. If you regularly play demanding games away from an outlet, plan around the shorter end rather than assuming an entire day of play.

The screen is LCD, not OLED

The 1080p LCD is larger and sharper than the original Switch’s screen, but it does not offer OLED contrast. Reviewers’ praise for the upgrade is most relevant to people coming from the original LCD Switch; owners of a Switch OLED may prefer the older model’s darker blacks and contrast in handheld play. The tradeoff is not simply “new screen is better”: it depends on whether resolution and size matter more to you than OLED’s image characteristics.

Handheld ergonomics may take getting used to

Ars Technica notes control compromises and says its reviewer found a more ergonomic third-party grip useful. IGN’s June 18, 2025 review description similarly praises the concept of mouse controls but criticizes sustained-use ergonomics. These are reviewer experiences, not a universal fit test. Hand size, grip, and session length can change how the console feels, so comfort is worth considering if handheld play is your main way of using it.

Is the Switch 2 worth it for you?

There is no single upgrade verdict in the reviews. Nintendo Life considers the upgrade worthwhile while acknowledging its cost and familiar feel; the Associated Press questions whether the launch lineup fully establishes the system’s quality and notes that its longer-term potential will become clearer as developers learn the hardware. Use your current console and play habits to judge the tradeoffs:

Starting point What may make Switch 2 appealing What to weigh carefully
Original Switch The larger 1080p screen, performance gains in some games, and compatibility with many existing Switch titles are substantial reasons to consider moving up. Battery life in demanding games and the price of replacing a working console. Confirm current local pricing; Nintendo of America’s $449.99 figure was the US suggested retail price at launch in 2025, not a current universal price.
Switch OLED A larger, higher-resolution display and newer hardware may matter if you want sharper visuals or play games that benefit from the added performance. The LCD panel gives up OLED contrast. Compare the screen in person if handheld image quality is a priority.
No Switch yet You get access to Nintendo’s hybrid format and a broad compatible Switch library alongside Switch 2 games. Judge the console by the games you want now, the cost in your region, and whether you will mostly play at home or on the go.

Reviewers see a capable hybrid console with room to grow, not a must-buy for every Switch owner. The case is strongest if you want the sharper screen, play games that benefit from the newer hardware, or value access to the compatible back catalog. It is weaker if your OLED Switch already satisfies you, you rely on long battery-powered sessions, or the current games do not justify the expense.

Can you use a regular microSD card for Switch 2 games?

Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage and supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB for game storage, according to Nintendo’s UK specifications. Ordinary microSD cards are limited to moving Switch screenshots and videos; they are not the format for expanding Switch 2 game storage. Check that a card is explicitly microSD Express before buying it for games.
