Nintendo officially revealed the Nintendo Switch 2’s core specifications on April 2, 2025, ahead of its June 5, 2025 launch. The system has a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD with HDR10 and variable refresh rate support up to 120Hz, 256GB of UFS storage, a custom NVIDIA processor, Wi-Fi 6, and TV output up to 4K at 60fps. Nintendo estimates 2–6.5 hours of battery life.

The important qualifications are that 4K and 120fps are maximum output capabilities—not guarantees for every game—and Nintendo has not officially published the console’s CPU architecture, GPU model, clock speeds, RAM capacity, or memory bandwidth.

Official Nintendo Switch 2 specifications

The following specifications come from Nintendo’s published Switch 2 technical specifications. Dimensions and weights are approximate.

Console

Category Official specification
Dimensions Approximately 4.5 inches tall × 10.7 inches wide × 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached
Maximum thickness Approximately 1.2 inches, including control-stick and ZL/ZR protrusions
Weight Approximately 0.88 lb console-only; approximately 1.18 lb with Joy-Con 2 attached
Processor Custom processor made by NVIDIA
Internal storage 256GB UFS, with some space reserved for system use
Wireless Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth
Game cards Nintendo Switch 2 and compatible Nintendo Switch game cards
Expandable storage microSD Express cards up to 2TB
Battery 5,220mAh lithium-ion battery
Estimated battery life Approximately 2–6.5 hours

Display

Feature Specification
Panel 7.9-inch LCD with wide color gamut
Resolution 1920×1080
Touchscreen Capacitive touchscreen
HDR HDR10
Variable refresh rate Up to 120Hz

This is a substantial upgrade over the original Switch’s standard 6.2-inch 720p screen, but it is still an LCD, not an OLED panel. HDR10 and 120Hz operation also depend on support from individual games and the display mode being used.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Video output

In TV mode, Nintendo lists output of up to 3840×2160 at 60fps. At 1920×1080 or 2560×1440, the system can output up to 120fps.

That means “Switch 2 supports 4K” does not mean that every game renders natively at 4K. It describes the console’s maximum output capability for compatible games, displays, and settings. Likewise, 120fps is available at 1080p or 1440p—not at 4K under Nintendo’s listed specifications. Handheld and tabletop modes are limited to the built-in screen’s maximum 1920×1080 resolution.

What Nintendo has not officially disclosed

Nintendo’s public technical page identifies only a custom NVIDIA processor. It does not officially list:

  • CPU core count or architecture
  • GPU model or architecture
  • CUDA or shader-core count
  • CPU or GPU clock speeds
  • RAM capacity or memory type
  • Memory bandwidth
  • Storage read/write throughput
  • Theoretical graphics-compute performance

Those details should not be presented as Nintendo-confirmed specifications. The supported conclusion is that Switch 2 offers substantially higher display-output and storage capabilities than the original Switch, while real performance varies by game, optimization, resolution mode, and whether a title has a native Switch 2 release or upgrade.

Storage: 256GB UFS and microSD Express only

Switch 2 includes 256GB of UFS internal storage, although Nintendo reserves part of that capacity for system use. Nintendo describes the internal storage as faster than the original Switch’s storage, but does not publish a specific throughput figure on the official specification page.

Expansion is the biggest storage change for existing owners. Switch 2 game storage requires a microSD Express card, with Nintendo’s U.S. specification page listing support for cards up to 2TB. A conventional microSD card cannot be used to install Switch 2 games. Nintendo says ordinary microSD cards can still be used to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch.

In practical terms, an old “Nintendo Switch” microSD card is not a drop-in game-storage solution for Switch 2. Buyers with a large digital library should budget for microSD Express storage rather than assuming an existing card will transfer.

Battery and charging

The console uses a non-user-removable 5,220mAh lithium-ion battery. Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life and approximately three hours to charge in Sleep mode.

Nintendo Switch 2 System with Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 Bundle
  • The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
  • Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***

This is an estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime for every game. Brightness, wireless use, display features, software demands, and other conditions affect battery life; demanding Switch 2 software may approach the lower end of Nintendo’s range. Nintendo says battery replacement is available for a fee through customer support.

Ports, audio, and connectivity

The console has two USB-C connectors:

  • Bottom USB-C port: charging and connection to the dock.
  • Top USB-C port: accessories and/or charging.

It also has a 3.5mm four-contact stereo mini-plug using the CTIA standard. Nintendo cautions that it cannot guarantee functionality with every 3.5mm audio product, so universal headset compatibility should not be assumed.

Switch 2 includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth. It also has a built-in monaural microphone with noise cancellation, echo cancellation, and automatic gain control. These features support communication functions such as GameChat, but a camera is not included with the standard console package.

Switch 2 dock specifications

Category Official specification
Dimensions Approximately 4.5 × 7.9 × 2 inches
Weight Approximately 0.84 lb
Video HDMI port
Network Wired LAN port
USB Two side-mounted USB 2.0-compatible ports
Other connections System connector and AC adapter port

The dock is included with the standard system and provides the connections needed for TV play, including HDMI, wired networking, power, and two USB ports.

Joy-Con 2 specifications

Feature Official specification
Attachment Magnetic attachment to the console
Sensors Accelerometer, gyroscope, and mouse sensors in each controller
Right controller NFC and C Button
Vibration HD Rumble 2
Battery 500mAh lithium-ion battery per controller
Estimated battery life Approximately 20 hours
Estimated charging time Approximately 3 hours 30 minutes
Weight Left: approximately 2.3oz; right: approximately 2.4oz

Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically instead of sliding onto the original rail system. Each controller has motion sensors and a mouse sensor. The right controller’s C Button is associated with GameChat, while its NFC capability supports compatible functionality. Nintendo’s official specifications do not state that the sticks use Hall-effect sensors.

What comes in the box?

Nintendo’s listed box contents are:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • Joy-Con 2 Wrist Straps
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
  • USB-C charging cable

The listed contents do not include a Pro Controller, carrying case, camera, or microSD Express card.

Backward compatibility and GameShare

Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. The qualification matters: Nintendo says some Switch games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Some titles receive free updates, while others offer paid upgrades or additional content for Switch 2.

Before upgrading, owners of a large digital library should check each important game’s compatibility and whether it has a Switch 2 Edition. A compatible original Switch release is not necessarily the same thing as a native Switch 2 version with improved graphics or performance.

GameShare allows a Switch 2 owner with a compatible game to invite other players to temporarily play through local play. In certain cases, an original Nintendo Switch can receive shared Nintendo Switch games from Switch 2. However, an original Switch cannot receive Switch 2-exclusive games through GameShare. GameShare should not be confused with ownership transfer or ordinary digital licensing.

Which original Switch accessories work?

Compatibility is partial rather than universal. Nintendo’s support guidance distinguishes between accessories that can be paired, accessories that can be reused in limited circumstances, and accessories that must be replaced.

Original accessory Switch 2 compatibility
Original Joy-Con Can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach directly to the Switch 2 console. They need a compatible charging solution.
Original Pro Controller Can pair wirelessly and can be charged through the Switch 2 dock.
Original Switch dock Not compatible with Switch 2.
Original AC adapter Can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode through the Switch 2 dock because of power-output differences.
Original HDMI cable Nintendo says it is not compatible; use the cable supplied with Switch 2.
Conventional microSD card Cannot store Switch 2 games; limited to transferring screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch.
Original Joy-Con Grip and selected accessories Not compatible with Joy-Con 2, including the original charging grip, wheels, leg strap, Ring-Con, straps, and AA battery pack. Some may still work with original Joy-Con paired wirelessly.

The result is not a complete reset for existing owners: original controllers remain useful in some situations, but the original dock, standard microSD game storage, HDMI cable, and several Joy-Con-specific accessories cannot simply be carried over.

U.S. price and date context

The U.S. launch MSRP was $449.99 before tax. Nintendo’s May 2026 financial materials state that the U.S. price is scheduled to increase to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. Therefore, the relevant price depends on when and where the console is purchased. The announced figures are U.S. prices and do not establish pricing in other regions.

The system launched on June 5, 2025. In Japan, Nintendo announced a system MSRP of 49,980 yen and a Mario Kart World bundle MSRP of 53,980 yen.

Is Switch 2 a meaningful upgrade?

For original Switch owners, the clearest improvements are the larger 7.9-inch display, 1080p handheld resolution, HDR10, VRR support, faster internal storage, 256GB capacity, stronger TV-output capability, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, and access to Switch 2-exclusive games.

The trade-offs are equally clear. The screen remains LCD rather than OLED, Nintendo’s battery estimate starts at only two hours, existing conventional microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games, the original dock cannot be reused, and compatibility varies by game and accessory. Nintendo also has not disclosed enough low-level hardware information for a complete silicon-to-silicon comparison with the original Switch.

New Nintendo buyers get the current platform and its exclusive software. Existing owners have the strongest reason to upgrade if they care about improved handheld clarity, faster loading, better game performance, or Switch 2-specific releases. Owners satisfied with 720p handheld play, existing Switch software, or an OLED-style display may have less reason to replace their current system.
