Switch 2 is the stronger choice if you want newer games, a larger and sharper screen, more built-in storage, and higher TV-output limits. The standard Switch costs less and remains the straightforward option if its games and hardware already meet your needs. In the U.S., Nintendo’s current listed MSRPs are $499.99 for Switch 2, $339.99 for standard Switch, and $399.99 for Switch OLED; retailer prices can differ. Because “Switch” can mean multiple models, this comparison separates the standard console from the OLED version.

How much do Switch 2 and Switch cost?

As of October 8, 2026, Nintendo’s U.S. MSRP for Switch 2 is $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo announced the $50 increase in May 2026 and said pricing for the Nintendo Switch system would not change. The current U.S. product page lists standard Switch at $339.99 and Switch OLED at $399.99. These are Nintendo’s MSRPs, not guaranteed store prices or bundle prices. Nintendo’s price revision announcement and its Switch family page have the current details.

Model Current U.S. MSRP Difference from Switch 2 MSRP
Nintendo Switch 2 $499.99, effective September 1, 2026 —
Nintendo Switch (standard) $339.99, listed October 8, 2026 $160 less
Nintendo Switch OLED $399.99, listed October 8, 2026 $100 less

The price gap is the core trade-off: Switch 2 costs substantially more than either older model, while offering updated hardware and access to Switch 2 games. If you are comparing against an OLED model, remember that the older console has a different screen technology, not merely a smaller version of the standard Switch display.

How do the screens and graphics compare?

Model Handheld display Resolution and refresh features
Switch 2 7.9-inch LCD 1920 × 1080; HDR10; VRR up to 120 Hz
Switch (standard) 6.2-inch LCD 1280 × 720
Switch OLED 7-inch OLED 1280 × 720

Switch 2’s screen is larger and has a higher resolution than either older model. It also supports HDR10 and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120 Hz. The OLED Switch, however, uses an OLED panel, while Switch 2 and the standard Switch use LCDs; the generations therefore differ in panel type as well as size and resolution. Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications and Switch technical specifications describe the displays.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

In TV mode, Switch 2 supports output up to 4K at 60 frames per second, or up to 120 fps at selected lower resolutions. Those are system limits, not guarantees that a particular game will reach them: the game and connected display affect what you see. Handheld and tabletop play use the console’s 1920 × 1080 screen. Nintendo added VRR support in TV mode in a system update released September 10, 2026, so older descriptions of VRR as handheld-only are out of date.

How much storage do they have, and what cards work?

Model Built-in storage Expansion format
Switch 2 256 GB microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage
Switch (standard) 32 GB microSDHC or microSDXC
Switch OLED 64 GB microSDHC or microSDXC

Switch 2 has much more built-in storage, but it changes the expansion-card requirement. Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards for Switch 2 game storage, with support up to 2 TB. Older, non-Express microSD cards cannot store and run Switch 2 games; they can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from Switch. A card that worked for an older Switch is therefore not automatically suitable for expanding Switch 2 game storage. Check Nintendo’s technical specifications before buying a card.

What about battery life and portability?

Nintendo estimates Switch 2 battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours and notes that the game being played affects runtime. This is Nintendo’s estimate, not an independent comparative battery test. Battery life for the standard Switch and Switch OLED varies by model and hardware revision, so a single figure should not be applied to every older console. If portable play time is decisive, check the exact model and revision you own rather than assuming that the newer system lasts longer.

Will Switch games work on Switch 2?

Switch 2 plays many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Compatibility should be checked game by game rather than assumed for the whole library. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and game-play support page are the places to check specific titles. Also verify accessories individually before upgrading; backward compatibility for games does not establish that every accessory will work as expected.

What is new about Switch 2’s hardware and features?

Beyond its screen and storage, Nintendo lists a custom NVIDIA processor, UFS internal storage, Wi-Fi 6, two USB-C ports, a built-in microphone, and a mouse sensor in each Joy-Con 2. These are hardware and feature differences, but a specification alone does not establish how much better a particular game performs. No independent comparative benchmark or measured real-world battery test is available here, so it would be misleading to turn the component list into a specific performance claim.

Switch 2 also supports software designed for its newer hardware, in addition to compatible Switch games. That makes game availability an important part of the upgrade decision: if a Switch 2 title you want is unavailable on the older console, the newer system may matter more than a display or storage upgrade. Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page covers system features and play modes.

Which console should you buy?

Choose Switch 2 if

  • You want access to Switch 2-specific games as well as compatible Switch titles.
  • You value a larger, higher-resolution screen, HDR10, and high-refresh/VRR features.
  • You need more built-in storage and are prepared to use microSD Express for expanded game storage.
  • You want the option of higher-resolution TV output, subject to the game and display.

Consider standard Switch if

  • Lower upfront cost is the priority and you mainly want to play games available for the original Switch.
  • The standard model’s 6.2-inch, 720p LCD and 32 GB internal storage are adequate for your use.

Consider Switch OLED if

  • You want to spend less than Switch 2 while keeping an OLED display for handheld play.
  • You do not need Switch 2-specific software or its newer display resolution and hardware features.

If you already own a Switch, the decision is not simply whether the new console has better specifications: compare the games you want, the exact titles and accessories you rely on, the U.S. price difference, and the cost of any required storage card. Nintendo describes Switch 2 as the next step in its hybrid console line, but that is the company’s positioning rather than an independent assessment. The practical case for upgrading depends on whether its newer games and features are worth the additional cost to you.
