Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, for example, but cannot attach to or charge from Switch 2; standard microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games. Check the game-specific exceptions and accessory functions below before you rely on an old game or piece of hardware.
Which original Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2. Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible, so backward compatibility is not a guarantee for every game or mode. Use Nintendo’s current game compatibility list to check a specific title; Nintendo says its findings can change as testing and updates continue. For a third-party game, contact its publisher about title-specific issues.
Games with original Joy-Con requirements or limitations
These Nintendo-listed examples depend on hardware or fit that Joy-Con 2 does not provide. They illustrate common exceptions; they are not a complete list of compatibility issues.
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con. Use original Switch Joy-Con attached to the Ring-Con.
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Toy-Con Robot accessory; original Joy-Con can be used.
- 1-2-Switch: The original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera is absent from Joy-Con 2. Connect an original right Joy-Con wirelessly for games that use the camera.
- Game Builder Garage: An original right Joy-Con is needed for IR Motion Camera Nodon or IR-Light Nodon in Free Programming mode.
- Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch: An original right Joy-Con is needed for Finger Calculations, Finger Drills, and Rock, Paper, Scissors Test.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 does not fit the Leg Strap. Nintendo specifies an original Joy-Con for Football Shoot-Out; the Leg Strap can be used with Switch 2 when paired with an original Joy-Con.
- WarioWare: Move It!: An original right Joy-Con is needed for microgames that use its IR Motion Camera.
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit: Original Joy-Con are required, and Switch 2 does not fit in several Toy-Con accessories, changing gameplay.
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit: Original Joy-Con are required, and Switch 2 does not fit in the game’s screen stand.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!: Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 force-feedback vibration is reduced compared with original Joy-Con, which can make the Joy-Con Hide & Seek minigame harder.
Which original Switch accessories work with Switch 2?
“Compatible” can mean different things: an accessory may pair wirelessly, work only in a particular mode, or fail to attach, charge, or wake the console. Check the specific function you need.

Can you use an old microSD card for Switch 2 games?
No. Nintendo says Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. A standard microSD card from the original Switch cannot save or load digital games or save data on Switch 2; it can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch.
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. An internet connection is required to download a system update the first time a card is used. Nintendo describes microSD Express cards as faster at reading and writing than standard microSD. When buying a card, check that its specifications explicitly say “microSD Express”; a standard microSD card is not a substitute.

Do Switch 2 games and controllers work on the original Switch?
Compatibility does not work both ways. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch. A Switch 2-exclusive game card will not run on the original console. A Switch 2 Edition card can play its Nintendo Switch version there, but without the Edition’s additional content or features.
Some digital access does carry across linked consoles: Nintendo Accounts and Nintendo Switch Online features can be used on either system, though some features are exclusive to Switch 2. Compatible virtual game cards can be loaded or ejected across linked Switch and Switch 2 consoles. GameShare can send supported games from Switch 2 to either generation; an original Switch can only receive supported GameShare games locally from Switch 2.
