Neither console runs every game better. Performance depends on the specific game, edition, patch, and graphics mode. The clearest direct comparison in the available evidence is Cyberpunk 2077: Digital Foundry’s 2025 review compares its Switch 2 version with PS4, but that one game cannot establish a winner across either console’s library.
What “runs better” means
A useful comparison separates several things that can point in different directions. A higher frame-rate target does not automatically mean steadier delivery; image quality and resolution are separate from frame rate; and loading times depend on the particular game and version. Portability is another practical difference, but it is not a performance measurement.

- Frame rate: the target or observed rate, and how consistently the game sustains it.
- Image quality: resolution, reconstruction, visual settings, and effects. Output resolution alone does not establish the quality of the rendered image.
- Loading: compare the same game and comparable versions; console specifications alone do not prove which loads faster.
- Availability and edition: confirm that the game is actually available on both systems in comparable versions.
- Play style: Switch 2 supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes, while PS4 is a home console.
For a fair head-to-head, compare the same title, similar scenes, and identified versions or patches. A result for one mode or one game should not be generalized to another.
What Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications do—and do not—show
Nintendo says Switch 2 can output up to 4K when connected to a compatible TV and running a compatible game. At 4K, the system’s frame-rate limit is 60 fps; up to 120 fps is possible in compatible games at other supported settings. Nintendo also cautions that frame rate differs from game to game. These are capability limits, not promises that a particular game reaches 4K, 60 fps, or 120 fps. Nintendo Switch 2 features and its FAQ give the conditions.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The built-in screen is a 7.9-inch, 1920×1080 LCD, according to Nintendo’s features page. That describes the handheld display, not the resolution or performance of every game. In TV mode, output also depends on a compatible display and game. Nintendo’s feature details cover the display and docked output.
The clearest direct example: Cyberpunk 2077
Digital Foundry’s technical review, published June 13, 2025, examines Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2, including docked and handheld play, and includes a PS4 comparison. Its review description identifies a 30 fps Quality mode and a 40 fps Performance mode for Switch 2, and notes that the Phantom Liberty expansion is more demanding. Those are mode targets described for this game and tested build—not results that can be applied to other titles.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The review is a useful example of how to compare versions, but the available evidence here does not establish a precise resolution, average frame rate, or universal winner for every scene. For detailed scene-by-scene claims, consult Digital Foundry’s Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 technical review and keep conclusions tied to its test conditions.
Are Switch games automatically improved on Switch 2?
No. Playing a previous-generation game through compatibility is not the same as playing an upgraded edition. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can be played on Switch 2, but some games may not be supported or fully compatible. Some titles receive free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance; the result depends on the individual game and its update. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information and the game’s current listing before assuming an upgrade exists.

Which console should you choose for performance?
If you care about a particular game, look for a comparison of that exact title and edition rather than choosing by console-wide specifications. Check whether the analysis identifies its modes, scenes, patches, and platform versions, and whether it measures frame pacing as well as frame-rate targets. The Switch 2’s published output limits describe what compatible games may support; they do not establish that its version beats PS4 in a specific title.
If playing away from a TV matters, Switch 2’s handheld and tabletop options are a distinct advantage in flexibility, not evidence of higher frame rate or better graphics. Nintendo describes its TV, tabletop, and handheld modes.
Switch 2 storage note
For players weighing digital libraries, Nintendo says Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expandable game storage; ordinary microSD cards cannot store games on the system. This is a compatibility and setup consideration, not a way to improve game performance. See Nintendo’s compatibility and storage guidance.
