If a Nintendo Switch game card is not recognized, remove it and reinsert it carefully. For Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo also recommends lightly wiping dirty card contacts with a dry, soft cloth. Keep fingers and tools out of the original Switch’s card slot; if safe checks do not solve the problem, stop troubleshooting and contact Nintendo support.
Check which Switch model you have
The original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 have separate support guidance. The dry-cloth cleaning instruction below is specifically from Nintendo’s Switch 2 support page; do not assume it is the exact procedure for the original Switch.

Try the safe first steps
Reinsert the game card
- Remove the card without forcing it. Check that it is the correct way around and that there is no obvious damage.
- Insert it again carefully, following the console’s card orientation. On Switch 2, Nintendo advises removing and reinserting the card if its software icon does not appear. Nintendo Switch 2: Starting and closing software
- Check whether the game icon now appears on the HOME Menu.
For Switch 2: gently wipe dirty contacts
If the card contacts look dirty, Nintendo says to lightly wipe them with a dry, soft cloth, taking care not to damage the contact area. A clean, lint-free microfiber cloth is one suitable option, but Nintendo does not require a branded cloth or special cleaning product. Do not use liquid, abrasive materials, sprays, swabs, or a cartridge-cleaning kit.
For the original Switch: leave the slot alone
Nintendo warns that frequently touching the gold- or green-colored contacts on the back of a game card can prevent it from being read. Hold the card by its edges and avoid touching those contacts. The console’s slot also contains reading contacts: Nintendo warns that inserting a cotton swab to clean it, or using a card with damaged contacts, can catch and damage internal parts. Keep fingers, swabs, and other tools out of the slot. Nintendo Switch: Situations that may cause a malfunction

Work out whether the problem is the card or the console
If you have access to another compatible console and a known-working game card, a careful cross-test can help narrow down the cause. This is a practical diagnostic inference, not a procedure stated on the cited Nintendo support pages.
- Try the affected card in another compatible console. If it also fails there, the problem may follow the card.
- Try a known-working card in the affected console. If that card also fails, the console may be involved.
Do not force a damaged card into any slot. A failed cross-test cannot identify the exact fault; use it only to help describe the symptoms when contacting support.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Stop DIY cleaning if the card has visibly damaged contacts, the slot may be damaged, or careful reseating has not helped. Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance says to send the console and affected software for inspection and repair if its recommended steps fail. For the original Switch, check Nintendo support for your region and model before following a repair process; the original-Switch guidance cited here warns against probing the slot. Pack or carry the card and console carefully, and explain which cards and consoles you tested. Do not attempt invasive slot cleaning or repair.

Could region compatibility cause the error?
A regional difference is not a universal explanation for a card-read error. Nintendo says overseas packaged games may work on Japanese consoles, but it has not verified every title, and downloadable-content compatibility can vary. Consult the game’s and console’s regional support information rather than assuming region is the cause. Nintendo Switch games
