Most Japanese and European physical game cards for the original Nintendo Switch family will play on a North American Switch, but that does not make every part of an import compatible. Language, downloadable content (DLC), eShop payment, online services and warranty support are separate questions. For a physical import, check the game’s language and region before buying; for a digital-only release, use an account and payment method that match its eShop region. Nintendo’s regional compatibility guidance excludes China-region products and cautions that it has not tested every overseas game-console combination.
First, check whether the game is actually unavailable in North America
Here, “Japan-exclusive” or “Europe-exclusive” means a Switch release that is not officially sold in the North American Nintendo eShop or through ordinary North American retail channels at the time you check. The label can hide important differences: the game may have a North American digital release but no cartridge, a different localized title, a delayed release, or an overseas edition with distinct language or DLC arrangements.

- Search the North American Nintendo eShop for the title and likely localized names.
- Check the Japanese or relevant European Nintendo storefront using Nintendo’s regional storefront selector.
- Check the publisher’s official site and release announcement for North American availability and supported platforms.
- Look for a North American physical edition under another publisher or title, and check whether the overseas product is for Switch, Switch 2, or both.
- Confirm whether a North American release is announced but not yet available.
A retailer listing or appearance in a regional presentation does not by itself establish that a game is exclusive.
Will an imported cartridge work on a North American Switch?
Usually, yes: Nintendo says non-Chinese Switch game cards are not region-locked. That means a Japanese or European cartridge will generally start on a North American Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED. It does not establish that the game has English, that its DLC will work with any region’s copy, or that online services and customer support will be identical. Nintendo says it has not tested every overseas software-and-console combination.

China-region consoles and game cards are an exception and are not compatible with consoles distributed in the Americas. Also, a label such as “Asia version” is not enough to identify a product as Japanese or European; check the exact region, publisher and language information on the listing or package.
How to import and check a physical game
- Before ordering, identify the exact edition and region. Confirm the seller’s listing matches the package you want, and read the game’s language information rather than inferring it from the country of sale.
- Check the retailer’s terms. Return rules, international return shipping, delivery, customs and taxes vary by seller and destination. A sealed game or a redeemed download code may not be returnable under the retailer’s policy.
- Insert the cartridge and install any available update. Starting the game does not establish that its DLC is compatible.
- Check the software’s region before buying add-ons. On the HOME Menu, highlight the game icon, press + or −, then select Software Information → Support Information. Nintendo documents this path in its digital-content troubleshooting guidance.
- Use the matching regional store or account for DLC. Confirm the base game’s supported region first; see the DLC section below.
How to buy a Japan- or Europe-region digital game
Nintendo eShop connects according to the country setting on the Nintendo Account. Changing that setting changes the eShop the account accesses the next time it connects. Nintendo’s country-setting guidance also warns that account balance does not carry over when the country changes and that a payment card issued for one region may not work in another region’s store.

Option 1: Use a separate regional account
For many importers, a separate account is the simpler way to keep regional shopping apart from a primary account. This is a practical setup, not a special Nintendo import program.
- Create a second Nintendo Account and set its country to the game’s store region, such as Japan.
- Create a separate user profile on the Switch and link it to that account.
- Open Nintendo eShop from that user to view the corresponding regional store.
- Purchase or redeem the game with a payment method accepted in that region, then launch it under the console’s account and licensing rules.
Option 2: Change the country on an existing account
Before changing the country of an account you already use, spend or otherwise resolve its remaining balance: Nintendo says the balance does not transfer between country settings. Payment cards issued in one country may also be rejected in another country’s eShop. Repeated country changes can complicate routine purchases, so do not treat this route as a risk-free way to switch stores.

Paying and redeeming codes
Use a payment method the regional store accepts, or a legitimate eShop card intended for that exact country or region. Nintendo says region-specific cards work only in the country or region for which they were sold, and it will not replace, exchange or refund a card bought for the wrong region. For Japanese downloads and prepaid codes, Nintendo’s Japanese purchase guidance says the Nintendo Account country/region must be Japan.
- Check the code’s country, currency and intended product before paying; Europe is not necessarily one interchangeable code territory.
- Confirm whether the code is for a base game, DLC or another product, and whether it is for Switch or Switch 2.
- Do not assume a North American payment card or PayPal will be accepted by a foreign store; available methods vary by regional storefront.
- Use a seller with clear product and refund terms. An account-sharing or preloaded-account offer is not the same as buying a game code for your account.
- For North American Nintendo Store purchases, Nintendo says the payment card must correspond to the same country; see its purchase payment guidance.
Match DLC to the base game’s region
Buy DLC for the same regional release as the base game. Nintendo says DLC works only with software released for the same region. For example, a Japanese cartridge calls for Japanese-region DLC; a European cartridge calls for European-region DLC. A North American DLC purchase may not be recognized by an imported copy even when the game title and content look identical.

If an add-on is missing, first identify the base game’s supported region through HOME Menu game icon → +/− → Software Information → Support Information. Then check the country/region of the account that bought the DLC and confirm the regions match. If they do, re-download the content using the purchasing account if appropriate; after checking those details, contact the publisher or Nintendo for help.

- Language availability in online features, where relevant
Do not assume every Japanese game lacks English or that every game from a major publisher includes it. Support varies by title and edition.
Updates, online play and Nintendo Switch Online
Keep four separate questions in mind: whether the cartridge launches, whether an update is available, whether DLC matches the game’s region, and whether the title’s online services work for your account and location. Nintendo does not guarantee full service or support for every overseas title on every regional console. Online access and matchmaking depend on the game, publisher, service availability and any account requirements. A Japanese cartridge does not, by itself, establish that you need a Japanese Nintendo Switch Online subscription; check the game’s own online requirements and publisher guidance.
Switch 2 and other regional hardware exceptions
The cartridge guidance above is for the original Nintendo Switch family—Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED. Do not automatically apply it to Switch 2-specific software, upgrade packs or regional hardware configurations. Nintendo’s 2026 corporate materials include Switch 2 and Japan-specific console information, but compatibility and account details still need to be checked for the particular product.
Do not buy a China-region console or game card expecting the usual non-Chinese cartridge behavior. Importing hardware also adds regional warranty and servicing concerns: Nintendo says warranty service is limited to the country or region for which a product was intended, and recommends using the console in the country where it was purchased. If the goal is just to play an overseas game, importing the software is generally the lower-risk route.

Physical import or digital purchase?
| Factor | Physical cartridge | Foreign-region digital |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Buy and insert the cartridge. | Use the relevant regional account/store and an accepted payment method or code. |
| Language check | Check the package and publisher information before opening. | Check the regional store listing and publisher information. |
| DLC | Match add-ons to the cartridge’s regional release. | Buying the game and DLC in the same regional store can make matching simpler. |
| Payment and delivery | Retailer checkout, shipping, customs and returns may apply. | No physical shipping, but regional payment and code restrictions apply. |
| Resale | A physical copy may be resellable, subject to retailer or marketplace terms. | Digital access is tied to Nintendo Account licensing. |
| Best fit | Collectors, buyers who want a cartridge, or those avoiding foreign eShop payment issues. | Digital-only releases or buyers who want immediate access and can pay in-region. |
Choose based on language, DLC plans, availability and total cost—not a presumed regional discount. Exchange rates, taxes, shipping, customs, payment fees, gift-card markups and resale value can change the comparison.
Quick Recap
Import decision checklist
- If there is an official North American version, compare it with the import’s specific language, content or physical benefits.
- If importing a cartridge, confirm its exact region and languages before purchase, then check its support information before buying DLC.
- If the title is digital-only, use the account country for its actual eShop region and arrange compatible funds before checkout.
- If you want add-ons, plan to buy DLC from the base game’s region.
- If the listing says “Asia,” names Switch 2 hardware, or involves a China-region product, pause and verify that exact product rather than relying on general Switch cartridge guidance.
