Nintendo has not announced a Switch Mini. The rumor began with unconfirmed patent interpretations published in December 2023. A separate 2026 discovery of an “OSM” code in Nintendo’s Account Portal has renewed speculation about another Switch 2-related device, but it does not establish a smaller console, a cheaper price, a release plan, or even a retail product.
Where the pocket-sized Switch rumor came from
A December 5, 2023 report interpreted Nintendo patent filings as possible evidence of a smaller Switch concept. The filings reportedly described:
- Magnetic front and rear protective covers.
- A rear cover that could remain attached during play.
- A front cover designed to protect the screen while the system was carried.
- Rearranged L/ZL and R/ZR shoulder controls.
- Relocated Home and Capture buttons.
- A more compact cooling system.
The report did not cite a Nintendo announcement, confirmed product listing, or manufacturing plan. A patent shows that a company explored or protected an idea; it does not show that the idea became a consumer product. The original coverage repeatedly treated the pocketable system as speculation, not a confirmed “Switch Mini,” “Switch Pocket,” or “Switch Micro.” Android Headlines’ December 2023 report is the source of those patent-based claims.
The 2026 OSM clue is a different rumor
In January 2026, observers reportedly found an unknown OSM code in Nintendo’s Account Portal. Entering the code was said to return a Switch 2-style product image, while invalid codes produced an error. The known Switch 2 identifier has been reported as BEE. Coverage of the observation appears at Nintendo Everything and GamingBolt.
#1 Best Overall
- 6.2” LCD screen

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
That is evidence of an additional identifier in Nintendo’s infrastructure, not a design reveal. The same generic image could represent a placeholder, an internal engineering entry, a hardware revision, a compliance model, or a future product. It does not reveal dimensions, screen size, price, battery capacity, performance, release timing, or whether the item will be sold to consumers.
“Ounce Small Model” is a fan interpretation of the letters, not a Nintendo-confirmed expansion. The 2023 patent story and the 2026 OSM observation should therefore be treated as separate developments rather than a continuous leak proving one device.
Switch 2 Lite, OLED model, or battery revision?
Several explanations remain possible, and none is confirmed.

| Possibility | Evidence | What it would imply | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 Lite or Mini | OSM code and fan interpretation | A smaller, cheaper, handheld-focused system | Low |
| Switch 2 OLED | Separate 2026 reporting about a rigid OLED panel | A potentially similar-sized system with a different display | Low |
| Battery-compliance revision | Nintendo battery information and secondary reporting | A regulatory redesign, potentially focused on Europe | Plausible but unconfirmed |
| Placeholder or internal model | Generic portal image and limited public data | No consumer product necessarily exists | Always possible |
A later interpretation links OSM to future European battery requirements rather than a compact console. Nintendo’s UK support information says some future products will receive battery-related revisions and that Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED systems will continue to be manufactured in Europe during 2026. A secondary report connects OSM with a possible Europe-only battery revision and replaceable-battery requirements, but that remains an attributed interpretation, not an official explanation: Nintendo UK information and Nintendo Reporters’ report.

That possibility points toward a display upgrade, not necessarily a pocketable redesign: GamesRadar.
Could a Switch 2 really fit in your pocket?
“Pocket-sized” is not a technical specification. An ordinary jeans pocket is substantially smaller than a Switch Lite’s footprint, and a modern console still needs a display, controls, battery, cooling hardware, storage, wireless components, and structural protection.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- A clamshell could protect the screen and reduce the volume carried, but it would be a major change from the Switch family’s flat-slab design.
- A smaller screen could make the device easier to carry while reducing readability and accessibility.
- A shorter body could constrain cooling and battery capacity, particularly during demanding Switch 2 games.
- “Fits in a pocket” might mean a jacket, cargo, or large coat pocket rather than a normal trouser pocket.
No public evidence establishes the dimensions or weight of an OSM device, so the phrase should be understood as the central claim of the original rumor, not a confirmed specification.
What a cheaper model might sacrifice
If Nintendo developed a lower-cost handheld, likely compromises would be design choices rather than leaked specifications. They could include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Integrated controls instead of detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- No dock, or reduced TV-output functionality.
- A smaller display and less internal storage.
- A simpler cooling system or a lower-performance configuration.
- A smaller battery or different battery construction.
- Reduced local multiplayer flexibility and compatibility with some accessories.
Those changes would matter because Nintendo says Switch 2 is physically larger than the original Switch and uses magnetic Joy-Con 2 attachment. Joy-Con 2 controllers can pair wirelessly, but they cannot attach to the original Switch’s side rails. Nintendo also warns that some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible on Switch 2. Any smaller model would need its own decisions about game compatibility, docking, accessories, sustained performance, and controls. See Nintendo’s size support page and its compatibility and Joy-Con support information.

Nintendo has made a smaller Switch before
The original Switch family includes Switch Lite, a handheld-only system with integrated controls. That precedent makes a Switch 2 Lite commercially conceivable, but it is not evidence that Nintendo is developing one. Switch 2 itself launched in the United States on June 5, 2025, at a $449.99 MSRP, and Nintendo announced that the U.S. MSRP became $499.99 on September 1, 2026, excluding sales tax. Sources: Nintendo’s launch announcement and the price-change announcement.
Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold worldwide as of March 31, 2026, and forecast 16.5 million additional units for the fiscal year ending March 2027. Strong sales could reduce the urgency of a low-cost model, while the higher price could create room for one; both are inferences, not reported Nintendo strategy. The figures appear in Nintendo’s hardware results and its 2026 financial briefing.

Wait for news
Wait only if you are comfortable with an indefinite timeline and the possibility that no Switch 2 Mini will ever be announced. A case or compact carrying solution can make the existing Switch 2 easier to transport, but cannot make it pocket-sized.
What would confirm the rumor?
The evidence would become substantially stronger if Nintendo published any of the following:
- An official announcement, product page, or investor statement naming the device.
- A store SKU or support page with model-specific specifications.
- A regulatory filing or certification showing a model number and dimensions.
- An official accessory-compatibility listing for the new body.
- Firmware or account-portal records containing multiple model-specific assets rather than one generic image.
At present, the public evidence is concentrated in patent filings and an unexplained portal identifier, not an official product announcement or a regulatory record.

The Switch Mini is a real rumor, but not a confirmed product. Nintendo has not announced a pocket-sized Switch, and OSM does not prove that a Switch 2 Lite exists. The code may identify another model, a placeholder, or a battery-compliance revision, while the older patents show only that Nintendo explored compact-design ideas. Treat any release date, price, dimensions, screen type, battery claim, or “Ounce Small Model” expansion as speculation until Nintendo publishes definitive information.
