Choose the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model if you regularly play in handheld or tabletop mode and want a larger, higher-contrast screen, a more useful stand, and enhanced onboard audio. Choose the standard Nintendo Switch if you mostly play on a TV or prefer its lower listed US MSRP. Both play the Nintendo Switch game library and support all three play modes.
What changes between the OLED and standard Switch?
The main difference is the screen you use away from a TV. The OLED model also brings more internal storage, a wider adjustable stand, enhanced onboard audio, and a dock with wired LAN built in. Nintendo’s model comparison lists the following specifications:
| Feature | Nintendo Switch – OLED Model (HEG-001) | Standard Nintendo Switch |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen | 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen |
| Internal storage | 64 GB; some storage is reserved for system use | 32 GB; some storage is reserved for system use |
| Estimated battery life | Approximately 4.5–9 hours | Revised HAC-001(-01): approximately 4.5–9 hours; older HAC-001: approximately 2.5–6.5 hours |
| Stand | Wide adjustable stand | Replaceable stand |
| Speakers | Enhanced onboard audio in handheld and tabletop play | Onboard speakers |
| Wired LAN in bundled dock | Built-in LAN port | Requires a separately purchased USB LAN adapter and LAN cable |
| Play modes | TV, tabletop, handheld | TV, tabletop, handheld |
| Displayed US MSRP | $399.99 | $339.99 |
Specifications and battery estimates are from Nintendo’s model comparison and battery guidance. Nintendo’s US product pages displayed the prices above on October 7, 2026; they are manufacturer suggested prices, not guarantees of retailer pricing or availability: OLED model and standard Switch.
Why the OLED model is better for handheld play
The OLED model’s screen measures 7.0 inches, compared with 6.2 inches on the standard Switch, and uses OLED rather than LCD technology. Nintendo explains that OLED pixels emit their own light instead of relying on an LCD backlight, allowing deeper blacks and sharper contrast. The difference is visible when playing on the console itself; it does not change what you see when the Switch is docked to a TV.
#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
The larger screen is paired with a wide adjustable stand for tabletop play and enhanced onboard audio in handheld and tabletop modes. Those refinements matter most if the console regularly leaves its dock. The standard Switch still supports the same play modes, but its stand and speakers are more basic.
Is the OLED model faster or longer-lasting?
Nintendo’s comparison establishes display and convenience differences, not a game-performance upgrade. Do not buy the OLED model expecting better game performance based on its screen, stand, speakers, or dock.
Rank #2
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
Battery life depends on the software being played and how the system is used. Nintendo estimates approximately 4.5–9 hours for OLED model HEG-001 and revised standard model HAC-001(-01), and approximately 2.5–6.5 hours for the older HAC-001. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. For a used standard Switch, check the model number and remember that the battery’s condition also affects runtime.
When the standard Switch is the better fit
If you expect to play mostly in TV mode, the OLED screen is not in use while the console is docked. The standard model offers the same three play modes and game-library compatibility, while its displayed US MSRP is $60 below the OLED model’s on October 7, 2026. That makes standard the more economical choice for TV-first play, provided the lower price matters more to you than OLED-specific features.

Rank #3
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
For someone who already owns a working standard Switch, the decision is more personal: the feature differences are clear, but they do not establish whether replacing your console is worth the cost for your play habits. Consider how often you use the built-in screen and whether the improvements would change your day-to-day experience.

Storage
The OLED model includes 64 GB of internal storage; the standard model includes 32 GB, with some space on each reserved for system use. Both support microSDXC expansion up to 2 TB, with the card sold separately. See Nintendo’s microSD card guidance before installing one.
Game compatibility
Nintendo says the OLED console is compatible with the Nintendo Switch game library. Some Nintendo Labo Toy-Con designs may not fit the OLED console’s greater length and larger display, and some experiences may differ because of the larger screen. Check the requirements for a particular Labo kit if you plan to use one.
Docks and wired networking
Nintendo says the standard and OLED docks can be used interchangeably. OLED dock model HEG-007 has a built-in LAN port; standard dock HAC-007 does not. A separately purchased USB LAN adapter is needed to connect a standard dock by wired internet. The ethernet cable is sold separately. See Nintendo’s wired internet setup instructions.
Best Value
- Glossy white dock with Hylian illustrations
- Hardware with designs from the game
- 7-inch OLED screen. Enjoy vivid colors and crisp contrast with a screen that makes colors pop
- Freely angle the system’s wide, adjustable stand for comfortable viewing in Tabletop mode
- Use the dock’s LAN port when playing in TV mode for a wired internet connection (LAN cable sold separately)
Screen protectors
Nintendo cautions that screen protectors made for the standard Switch or Switch Lite may not fit the OLED model’s larger screen. Check that a protector is specifically compatible with the OLED model before buying.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Choose OLED if you often play handheld or tabletop and value the larger OLED display, adjustable stand, enhanced onboard audio, or extra internal storage.
- Choose standard if the system will usually be connected to a TV and the lower displayed US MSRP is more important than the OLED model’s refinements.
- For a used standard Switch, identify whether it is HAC-001 or revised HAC-001(-01), and assess battery condition before buying.
