Nintendo’s latest official figures show 156.59 million Nintendo Switch consoles and 23.68 million Nintendo Switch 2 systems sold worldwide through June 30, 2026. The often-quoted totals of about 155 million Switch consoles and 17 million Switch 2 systems are an earlier snapshot, not the latest figures.
The latest Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 sales figures
Nintendo’s cumulative worldwide hardware totals are reported through June 30, 2026. The company published its latest results on August 6; those figures are not a live count of sales through August.
| Platform | Hardware sold worldwide | Software units | Reporting cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | 156.59 million | 1,561.95 million | June 30, 2026 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 23.68 million | 58.17 million | June 30, 2026 |
These are Nintendo’s reported cumulative sales totals. “Software units” means copies sold, not the number of distinct games available. The combined hardware total is 180.27 million, calculated by adding the two platforms; Nintendo does not present that as a single platform total.

Why “155 million Switch, 17 million Switch 2” is outdated
The headline figures describe an earlier reporting period and are rounded. In results covering the nine months through December 31, 2025, Nintendo reported 17.37 million Switch 2 units and about 155.37 million original Switch units. By March 31, 2026, those totals had risen to 19.86 million and 155.92 million, respectively. The June-quarter update took them to 23.68 million and 156.59 million.

The progression is useful context: the old figures were not necessarily wrong when first reported, but they should not be presented as current. Nintendo reports sales periodically, so the latest available total always has a specific cutoff date.
Switch 2 added 3.82 million systems in the June quarter
During April 1–June 30, 2026—Nintendo’s first quarter of fiscal 2027—Switch 2 hardware sales were 3.82 million units. That was down 34.4% from the same quarter a year earlier, but the comparison is not like-for-like: the prior-year period included the system’s launch, which began June 5, 2025. A launch quarter can make the year-ago comparison unusually high.
Nintendo described Switch 2 hardware adoption as strong and pointed to new releases and a broader software lineup from Nintendo and other publishers as contributing factors. Switch 2 software sales reached 9.46 million units in the quarter. Nintendo also highlighted titles including Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which sold 7.94 million units, and Pokémon Pokopia, which sold 1.27 million units during the period. Those figures show software activity alongside hardware growth; they do not establish how many console purchases any one game caused.

- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The Switch 2 had reached 19.86 million units by the end of its first fiscal year on March 31, 2026, and stood at 23.68 million three months later. That is a substantial early installed base, but comparisons such as “fastest-selling console” depend on the exact time window and measurement used. Lifetime totals and launch-period pace are different comparisons.
The original Switch is mature, but still commercially significant
The original Switch added 660,000 hardware units in April–June 2026, down 31.8% year over year. Its hardware sales are now far below the level of a newer platform, but the system’s audience and software business remain large: Nintendo reported 33.81 million Switch software units for the quarter and 1,561.95 million cumulatively.
That is why a falling hardware run rate should not be confused with the platform becoming irrelevant. Nintendo continues to support the original system, and its enormous installed base remains important to game sales. The original Switch has also passed the 154.02 million units Nintendo reports for Nintendo DS, making Switch the company’s highest-selling dedicated game platform on its own hardware-sales table. Cross-company “best-selling console” rankings require care because reporting methods may differ.

What Nintendo means by “sales”
Nintendo’s totals are worldwide consolidated unit sales, not a verified count of consoles already purchased by final consumers from retailers. In its explanatory material, Nintendo uses sell-in for units sold by the Nintendo group to outside entities; it also includes units sold directly to consumers through Nintendo’s websites. Sell-in can differ from retail sell-through, so “Nintendo reported sales” is more precise than claiming every unit has been confirmed as a consumer purchase.

For the June quarter alone, the hardware additions were 3.82 million Switch 2 systems and 660,000 original Switch systems. Nintendo’s fiscal first quarter is April through June; fiscal 2027 began April 1, 2026, and does not mean the quarter ran in calendar 2027.
Software totals need a category caveat
The software-to-hardware ratios are about 2.46 Switch 2 software units per Switch 2 console and 9.96 Switch software units per original Switch console, calculated from Nintendo’s cumulative totals. These ratios are broad indicators, not precise counts of games owned by an average console buyer. They can be affected by bundles, digital purchases, households with multiple systems, and games used across the two generations.

Nintendo’s accounting categories also matter. Packaged Switch 2 Edition software is counted as Switch 2 software, while downloadable versions of Switch 2 Edition titles are included in Nintendo Switch software sales. As a result, the platform software totals do not map perfectly to which hardware a player uses to play a particular title.

Switch 2 is now Nintendo’s principal hardware growth platform, while the original Switch remains a mature system with a vast audience and continuing software sales. The two ecosystems overlap: Nintendo says Switch software can also be played on Switch 2, and older titles continue to sell. The sales data therefore point to a generational transition with continued activity on the older platform—not an immediate handoff in which the original Switch stops mattering.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor buyers, the sales totals alone do not decide whether an upgrade makes sense. Switch 2 is the current platform for newer releases and features; an existing Switch owner who is content with that system’s library has no obligation to upgrade simply because the successor is selling well. Availability, prices, bundles, and suitability vary by market, so check Nintendo’s official Switch 2 and Switch pages for local product information.

Financial results are a separate measure
Nintendo’s June-quarter net sales were ¥517.8 billion, down 9.5% year over year, while operating profit rose 150.5% to ¥142.5 billion. The company said the quarter included approximately US$300 million recorded as a reduction in cost of sales related to refunds of U.S. IEEPA tariffs. That adjustment is important context: the profit increase should not be attributed solely to console demand or Switch 2 sales.
In short: Nintendo’s latest reported totals are 156.59 million original Switch consoles and 23.68 million Switch 2 systems through June 30, 2026. The 155-million/17-million phrasing is an older, rounded snapshot; Switch 2 is growing quickly, while the original Switch continues to support a substantial software business.
