If your Nintendo Switch has a blank screen after an update, start with Nintendo’s power-reset and charging steps. They can help rule out a stuck power state or depleted battery, but they do not reverse an update or prove that the update caused the problem. These instructions apply to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED—not Switch 2. Switch Lite cannot be used with a dock.
Try these four steps in order

Undock the console and reset its power state
Remove the console from its dock. Unplug the AC adapter from both the wall outlet and the console, and leave it unplugged for 30 seconds. Then hold the console’s POWER button for 20 seconds and release it; Nintendo describes this as a forced shutdown. Reconnect the adapter to the wall and console, then press POWER once. Nintendo says Switch systems do not have a power light, so the absence of a light cannot tell you whether the console is on. Nintendo’s no-power instructions and charging instructions give these reset timings.

If a charging icon appears, leave it charging
A nearly empty battery can keep the display off even if a charging indicator briefly appears at the top-left. Charge the console for 30 minutes before trying POWER again. Nintendo’s no-power guidance gives a 15-to-30-minute interval when the indicator appears; its charging guidance says at least 30 minutes before retrying. Using 30 minutes follows the longer of those official instructions.

Check the adapter, outlet, and USB-C connection
Look for the adapter model HAC-002 and inspect its cable and connectors for fraying, splits, looseness, or kinks. Try another wall outlet. Nintendo warns that damaged or non-licensed adapters may have compatibility problems; do not assume that any USB-C charger will work. If there is no charging indicator, check whether the adapter powers another Nintendo USB-C product, or try another adapter if one is available. If the console’s USB-C port appears damaged, stop troubleshooting and seek service rather than forcing the connector.

Only consider replacing the adapter if yours is missing, damaged, or not licensed. Checking the existing charging path first can help distinguish an adapter issue from a console fault.

If the console starts, check for an update; if it stays blank, request service
Once the system is running, open System Settings > System > System Update to check the system version or start an update. If an update cannot be completed, Nintendo advises restarting and trying again. If the console remains without power or a usable display after the steps above, Nintendo says it needs service. Follow Nintendo’s service guidance and include the AC adapter so it can be tested with the console.

Does the update itself explain the blank screen?
Not on the evidence in Nintendo’s published update notes. Nintendo’s update history lists version 23.0.1, released September 30, 2026, as fixing an issue from version 23.0.0 in which software could take a long time to start, pause, or close. That note does not say the console may fail to power on. The cause of an individual blank-screen or no-power problem therefore remains undetermined; the timing after an update alone does not establish that the update caused it. Nintendo’s system update history also explains how to check the installed version and update the console.

If the console is docked, check whether its display is being sent to the TV before treating a dark handheld screen as a no-power symptom. Undocking it is also the first step in Nintendo’s reset procedure. Switch systems have no power light, so use the response to the reset and charging steps—not a missing LED—to assess whether it wakes.
