Yes—but “dropped X/Twitter support” needs a precise definition. Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation have all retired built-in console integration for posting captures directly to X (formerly Twitter) or linking console accounts to the service. X itself remains accessible on a phone, computer, or browser, and you can still publish screenshots and clips after transferring them off the console.
What actually disappeared?
The change affects platform-level features such as:
- A direct “post to Twitter/X” option in a capture menu
- Automatic or one-click publishing of screenshots and clips
- Console account linking to X/Twitter
- Social-friend suggestions based on linked X/Twitter accounts
- Some game features that depended on the console’s social integration
It does not mean that X is blocked on these platforms or that every game has lost its own sharing system. You can still move a capture to a phone or computer, upload it through the X app or website, and use any independent game-level account features that remain available.
The practical difference is simple: what used to be a one-step console-to-X post now generally requires a transfer to another device first.

Timeline: when each platform removed native X integration
| Platform | What changed | When | Current route to X |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | Direct X posting from the Album and related social integration ended | June 10, 2024 in the Americas; some regional notices list June 11 | Transfer captures to a phone or computer, then upload manually |
| Xbox | Native Twitter/X sharing disappeared during the platform’s 2023 capture and interface changes | Generally reported as April 2023 | Xbox app, OneDrive, external storage, or another transfer method |
| PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 | Native Twitter/X account linking and direct posting were removed | November 2023, according to contemporary reporting | PlayStation App, USB, or another local transfer method |
The dates do not represent one simultaneous industry-wide decision. Nintendo’s date is documented in an official support notice. The Xbox and PlayStation dates are best described as dates reported in contemporary coverage rather than as dates established by a single clearly located first-party announcement.
Nintendo Switch: the clearest documented change
Nintendo’s official notice says that X integration on Nintendo Switch was discontinued on June 10, 2024 in the Americas. The notice removed the ability to post screenshots and videos directly from the Switch Album to X.
Nintendo’s regional notices can show June 11, 2024 instead. That is a regional timing difference, not a contradiction. For example, Nintendo’s UK support notice uses June 11.
A separate Nintendo Account change happened earlier
On October 25, 2022, Nintendo stopped allowing Facebook or Twitter accounts to be linked to Nintendo Accounts or used to create or sign in to a Nintendo Account. That was separate from the later removal of direct Switch posting. Nintendo documented that change in its Nintendo Account support information.

Game-specific effects
Nintendo’s 2024 notice also covered more than ordinary Album posting. It affected social-network friend suggestions and posting-related behavior associated with Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Smash World-related sharing.
For Splatoon 3, some posts could instead be sent directly to Nintendo’s servers rather than to X or Facebook. Nintendo also noted that some content created by players under 13 would not be visible to other players. These changes should not be generalized into a claim that every old game-sharing workflow still works—or that every one disappeared in exactly the same way.
At the time of Nintendo’s notice, Facebook posting from the Switch Album continued, although Nintendo warned that it could also be discontinued later. Nintendo pointed users toward the Switch’s capture-transfer functions as the alternative to direct X posting.
How to share a Switch capture now
- Capture the screenshot or video on the Switch.
- Use the console’s built-in transfer function to send it to a compatible phone or computer.
- Open the X app or website on that device.
- Attach the transferred file, add any caption or edits, and publish it manually.
The exact transfer interface can vary by Switch model, system software, phone, and browser. Wireless transfer can be awkward for batches of files, and videos usually take longer to move than screenshots.

Xbox: direct X sharing ended, but capture sharing did not
Xbox’s native Twitter/X posting option disappeared during its 2023 interface and capture-management changes. Contemporary reporting generally places the removal in April 2023. Xbox’s official material from that period documents active work on the Home, community, and capture experience, but it does not provide a single definitive announcement stating a universal Twitter-discontinuation date.
That distinction matters: Xbox did not eliminate screenshots, clips, or sharing. Its ecosystem shifted toward first-party transfer routes, including the Xbox mobile app, OneDrive, external storage, and access from a PC or phone.
Xbox’s later official Insider release notes documented automatic capture uploads to OneDrive and backup options involving OneDrive or an external drive.
How to share an Xbox capture now
- Record the screenshot or clip on Xbox.
- Retrieve it through the Xbox mobile app if it is available there, or use OneDrive, external storage, or a PC.
- Save or download the file to the device from which you want to post.
- Upload it through the X app or website.
Cloud availability, automatic-upload settings, storage limits, and synchronization time can vary. Longer clips may take time to upload and can consume OneDrive capacity. A OneDrive workflow also requires the relevant Microsoft account and sufficient storage.

PlayStation: the console post button was removed in 2023
PlayStation removed native Twitter/X integration from PS4 and PS5 in November 2023, according to contemporary gaming coverage. The change affected console account linking and direct posting from the console.
PlayStation’s replacement workflow centers on the PlayStation App: capture on the console, retrieve an eligible capture on a connected phone, save it, and then share it through the phone’s ordinary apps—including X.
How to share a PlayStation capture now
- Take a screenshot or record a clip on the PS4 or PS5.
- Open the PlayStation App on a connected mobile device.
- Retrieve the capture if it is supported by the console, app, region, and account configuration.
- Save it to the phone and post it using the X app or website.
This is not the same as direct console-to-X publishing. App availability can depend on console generation, region, app version, capture type, account settings, and how long the capture remains available. If a capture does not appear in the app, USB or another local transfer method may be the more reliable option.

No single common reason has been established by the sources documenting these removals. Possible explanations include changes to X’s API and commercial terms, account-linking and moderation concerns, privacy and safety considerations, low usage compared with maintenance costs, and the growing role of first-party mobile apps.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Those are reasonable explanations, not confirmed universal causes. It would be inaccurate to state as fact that API pricing, ownership changes, moderation policy, or low engagement caused all three companies to remove the feature unless a company specifically says so.
The replacement strategies do show different priorities: Nintendo relies more heavily on device-transfer tools, Xbox emphasizes the Xbox app and cloud or external storage, and PlayStation emphasizes the PlayStation App.
What the headline does not mean
- X is not inaccessible: you can still use it on a phone, tablet, PC, or browser.
- Not every game lost X features: a game may have its own independent sharing or account-linking system.
- Other social services may remain supported: removing X integration does not automatically remove YouTube, Twitch, Discord, OneDrive, or first-party sharing.
- A missing button is usually not a console fault: on these platforms, native X posting was retired rather than hidden by an ordinary settings change.
The important distinction is between console integration and service access. The former has been removed; the latter has not.
Bottom line
Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation have all ended built-in X/Twitter sharing, but they have not made it impossible to publish gaming screenshots and clips on X. The one-button workflow is gone: capture on the console, transfer the file through the platform’s app, cloud storage, external storage, or device-transfer tools, and post from a phone or computer instead.
