Maybe in concept, but there is no evidence that Nintendo’s detachable dual-screen patent is the next Switch. The application describes two display-equipped devices that can detach, reconnect in either of two orientations, and operate independently. Nintendo has not confirmed a product, launch plan, or connection to Switch 2.
What does Nintendo’s patent describe?
The application, as reproduced by Nintendo Life, describes an electronic apparatus made from two devices, each with its own display. The devices can be attached to or detached from each other. A connection on the second device can join a connection on the first in either of two orientations, with the second orientation reversed from the first.
In practical terms, the design is a pair of screen-bearing halves that can be joined in different ways rather than a single fixed dual-screen shell. GameSpot reports that the halves can also work independently, and that in a closed configuration a screen remains visible on the outside.
How could the two-screen arrangement work?
The filing points to several possible physical configurations, but it does not establish one final layout. The halves could be joined for a two-screen setup, reversed relative to one another, or detached for separate use. The outside-visible screen in the closed configuration could let a player see a display without opening the device, but the cited sources do not specify exactly how games would use each arrangement.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
That makes “DS-style” a rough comparison, not a confirmed description of a retail console. The application concerns two detachable devices; it does not establish a hinged clamshell design or explain what software would support the second screen.
Is this the next Switch, or a Switch 2 accessory?
Nintendo’s investor material identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch and says it was released on June 5, 2025. Nintendo describes Switch 2 as having a larger, more responsive screen, magnetic Joy-Con controllers, and more powerful processing and graphics performance.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The patent describes an additional display-bearing device concept, but Nintendo’s Switch 2 description does not identify it as a feature or accessory. No cited source confirms that the filing is intended for Switch 2 or for a future Switch successor.

What the filing does not confirm
A patent application records an invention Nintendo has described; it is not a product announcement. GameSpot and HotHardware caution that Nintendo has filed concepts that never reached retail. The cited coverage does not confirm:

- a product name, launch date, price, or final design;
- a game lineup or software support for using two screens;
- compatibility with Switch 2, its controllers, or other accessories;
- battery life, weight, durability, or the connection technology and its latency.
What would matter if Nintendo announces a product?
The application is enough to identify the concept, but not to judge it as a usable console. If Nintendo announces hardware based on it, the practical questions would include how the screens are arranged, whether each half can run alone, how the halves connect, and which games support the setup. Portability, weight, battery life, durability, and compatibility with Switch 2 accessories would also determine how useful it is beyond the novelty of a second display.
