Nintendo’s Skyline Emulator Takedown Story Needs a Timeline: The Android Project Ended in 2023

Skyline was already discontinued in May 2023. Nintendo’s February 2026 GitHub DMCA notice named the archived Android emulator among many projects, but it was not a new shutdown.

No—not as a new 2026 shutdown. Skyline’s developers stopped work in May 2023 after Nintendo targeted the separate Lockpick_RCM key-dumping tool. GitHub later archived Skyline’s repository on May 13, 2023. Nintendo’s February 12, 2026 DMCA notice named that already-discontinued repository among many Switch-emulator projects, but it did not newly end Skyline’s development.

The accurate description is that Nintendo’s legal pressure helped prompt Skyline’s voluntary shutdown in 2023, while the 2026 filing was part of a broader GitHub enforcement campaign.

What Skyline was

Skyline was an experimental, open-source Nintendo Switch emulator built specifically for ARMv8 Android devices. Its official repository described software intended to run Switch homebrew and games on Android, under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The project mattered because Android was its primary target rather than an afterthought to a desktop emulator.

The official project page is Skyline’s GitHub repository, while the organization page is at github.com/skyline-emu.

When Skyline actually stopped

Skyline development ended in May 2023. Contemporary reporting places the developers’ decision around May 6–9; GitHub records the repository as archived on May 13, 2023. The archive date is not necessarily the date on which the team first announced its decision.

The project README now says development has ceased. Archiving made the repository read-only rather than deleting it, so its source code and existing builds could remain available under the project’s license. That status does not imply ongoing maintenance, support, or a current official Android release.

Contemporaneous coverage of the halt is available from Nintendo Life.

Why the developers stopped

The immediate trigger was Nintendo’s action against Lockpick_RCM, a separate tool used to extract security keys from a Switch. Reporting said Skyline’s developers feared that continuing their work could expose them to similar legal claims because their development process involved dumping keys from hardware they owned.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Nintendo Wire’s report on the Lockpick_RCM takedown and Nintendo Life’s account of Skyline’s halt describe that connection.

This is more precise than saying Nintendo served Skyline with a cease-and-desist or obtained a court order shutting it down. The available public record supports a voluntary decision by Skyline’s developers after legal action against related infrastructure, not a documented 2023 judgment specifically against Skyline.

What Nintendo’s February 2026 GitHub notice changed

On February 12, 2026, Nintendo submitted a DMCA notice published in GitHub’s public DMCA repository. The notice named Skyline alongside numerous other Switch-emulator repositories, including Yuzu-related projects, Ryujinx, Sudachi, Suyu, Citron and Eden.

Nintendo’s filing alleges that the named repositories provide or link to emulators that circumvent technological protection measures and facilitate unauthorized access to encrypted Switch games. Those are Nintendo’s allegations in a takedown notice, not a judicial finding that every repository committed identical conduct.

  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

A GitHub DMCA notice, a repository removal and a court judgment are different events:

  • DMCA notice: a rights holder asks a hosting service to act on alleged infringement or circumvention.
  • Repository action: GitHub may restrict, remove or otherwise respond to the repository.
  • Court judgment: a judge enters an order after litigation or settlement.

Because Skyline had already been archived, its inclusion in the 2026 filing does not show that it was actively maintained or that Nintendo had just discovered and shut down a functioning new project. Secondary coverage characterized the filing as a broad crackdown; Android Authority’s report provides that broader context.

How the Yuzu case fits in

Nintendo’s 2024 case against Tropic Haze, the company associated with Yuzu, helps explain the legal risk surrounding later Switch-emulator projects, but Skyline was not a party to that lawsuit.

On March 6, 2024, a Rhode Island federal court entered a final judgment and permanent injunction after the parties settled. The order barred distribution of Yuzu and specified circumvention software and required destruction or deletion of certain tools and cryptographic keys controlled by the defendants. The court filing is available at Docket Alarm. Contemporaneous reporting said the settlement included a reported $2.4 million payment and the shutdown of Yuzu and Citra; see Nintendo Life.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Red Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • 6.2” LCD screen.
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers

That judgment addressed Yuzu’s defendants and conduct. It was not a blanket ruling that every emulator, or every instance of personal emulation, is unlawful.

Is emulation itself illegal?

There is no single worldwide answer. Legal analysis can involve distinct questions about:

  • the emulator program itself;
  • circumvention of technological protection measures;
  • distribution or use of proprietary cryptographic keys;
  • unauthorized copies of games; and
  • copyright infringement or claims that software facilitates infringement.

Game ownership or console ownership does not automatically resolve every anti-circumvention issue, and rules vary by jurisdiction and by the method used. The safest description of Nintendo’s notices is that they assert circumvention and unauthorized-access theories; they do not establish a universal rule covering all emulation activity.

What “discontinued” means for Android users

Discontinued software is not normally remotely disabled. An existing Skyline installation may continue to launch, but its future usefulness depends on the device, Android version, GPU driver, emulator build and game.

Nintendo Switch – Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con (Renewed)
  • One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
  • Two players can each take one
  • Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
  • Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
  • New Android or graphics-driver changes can introduce crashes or broken rendering.
  • New games will not receive Skyline-specific compatibility fixes.
  • Performance and compatibility can differ substantially between chipsets and drivers.
  • An old APK remaining online is not evidence of official support or safe provenance.
  • A fork or mirror may use Skyline code without being operated or endorsed by the original team.

The MPL 2.0 license can permit code reuse, while the Skyline name and branding are not licensed for unrestricted reuse. Therefore, a download calling itself “Skyline” is not automatically an official build.

Safety note: Skyline is discontinued. Be cautious with APKs hosted outside verifiable project archives, especially files promising “new” Skyline updates. Do not download or share copyrighted game files, console encryption keys or firmware from unauthorized sources. The legal status of emulation-related activity depends on the software, materials, conduct and jurisdiction.

The timeline at a glance

Date Event What it means
May 2023 Skyline developers cease development after legal concerns linked to Lockpick_RCM. The original project ends voluntarily.
May 13, 2023 GitHub archives the Skyline repository. The repository becomes read-only; it is not necessarily deleted.
March 6, 2024 Federal court enters the Yuzu/Tropic Haze injunction. Context for Nintendo’s approach to circumvention-related Switch software, not a Skyline ruling.
February 12, 2026 Nintendo’s GitHub DMCA notice names Skyline among many repositories. A later rights-holder complaint involving an already-discontinued project.

Bottom line

The headline “Nintendo is shutting down Skyline Switch Emulator on Android” collapses two separate events. Skyline’s active development ended in May 2023 after Nintendo’s action against the related Lockpick_RCM tool. Nintendo later named Skyline’s archived repository in a broad February 2026 GitHub DMCA notice. That filing may affect where old source or builds are hosted, but it was not the original shutdown and does not make Skyline a newly active emulator that Nintendo suddenly stopped.
