Nintendo already sells two Switch 2 configurations in Japan: a Japanese-only model for ¥59,980 and a multi-language model for ¥69,980. The cheaper system’s language and Nintendo Account restrictions could make it less attractive to overseas resellers, but Nintendo has not said the price gap was created to fight scalping. The clearest reading is that the structure segments the product by market and buyer needs—with a possible resale-deterrent effect.
What Nintendo’s “dual pricing” means
This is not dynamic pricing or a different checkout price for the same console. Japan has two hardware configurations with different language and account limits. Nintendo introduced them when it announced Switch 2 in April 2025; the console launched on June 5, 2025. The launch prices and current Japanese prices are:

Both Japanese prices include tax. Nintendo raised the Japanese-language model’s price effective May 25, 2026, while saying the multi-language model’s price would remain unchanged. The gap has therefore narrowed from ¥20,000 at launch to ¥10,000. Nintendo says systems sold outside Japan use the same specifications as Japan’s multi-language model. The potential resale logic is straightforward: a reseller buys the less expensive Japanese-language console, exports it, and tries to sell it to someone in a market where the multi-language configuration is the norm. But the Japanese model is not fully interchangeable with that international product. A buyer who does not use Japanese, or whose Nintendo Account is not set to Japan, may not want it.

Those limits do not make the console impossible to resell abroad. They can, however, shrink the pool of potential buyers and make it harder to present the cheaper unit as equivalent to the international configuration. That weakens one possible arbitrage route, especially once the Japanese price gap narrowed to ¥10,000. Shipping, marketplace fees, taxes, currency changes, returns and support or warranty complications can further reduce a reseller’s margin. The size of the gap alone is not a guaranteed profit calculation.
The restrictions may matter more than the price difference itself: a lower-priced product with narrower appeal is less useful to an overseas buyer than an unrestricted global configuration. Still, demand and supply conditions matter. If a particular market has shortages or much higher prices, resellers may find buyers for either configuration, or shift their attention to the multi-language model.
Nintendo has not confirmed an anti-scalping motive for the price gap
Nintendo’s public explanation describes the Japanese-language system as a lower-priced option intended to make the hardware more accessible to consumers in Japan. Its May 2026 announcement attributed price revisions to changing market conditions and the global business outlook; Nintendo’s financial materials also discuss the broader market environment and higher component costs. The company has not publicly said that the ¥10,000 difference is a resale-control charge, or that it set the gap according to overseas resale margins.

So it is reasonable to say the design may help discourage cross-border resale. It is not accurate to say Nintendo confirmed that this was why it introduced dual pricing. Affordability and market segmentation are the stated rationale; any anti-scalping benefit is an inference from how the models differ.

Separate resale-prevention steps
Nintendo has taken other steps against unauthorized resale. In May 2025, it announced cooperation with Mercari, LINE Yahoo and Rakuten to prevent unauthorized listings of Nintendo products, including Switch 2, on flea-market services. That is direct evidence of resale-prevention efforts, though it does not establish the motive behind the console’s two Japanese price points. Nintendo’s announcement names the marketplace partners.
Separately, Digital Trends reported that Nintendo’s Japanese purchase process required qualifying accounts to show 50 hours of playtime on the original Switch. Treat that as a reported Japan-specific eligibility measure, not a universal rule for all buyers or countries.
What the prices mean for buyers outside Japan
Buyers outside Japan generally encounter the multi-language configuration, which Nintendo says has the same specifications as the Japanese multi-language model. For U.S. buyers, Nintendo’s announced price is now $499.99, effective September 1, 2026; the previous $449.99 price applied through August 31. U.S. prices exclude sales tax. In Europe, Nintendo announced a My Nintendo Store price of €499.99 from September 1, up from €469.99; European prices include tax. Local retailer prices, availability and taxes may differ from manufacturer pricing. Nintendo’s regional pricing announcement gives the effective dates and tax treatment.

The Japanese-language console’s restrictions are especially relevant if you need a non-Japanese interface, use an account set to another country or expect to resell internationally. Travelers and people who may relocate should weigh the Japan-account limitation before buying. For a buyer who uses Japanese, has a Japan-region account and expects to keep using the console in Japan, the Japanese-language model may be the more suitable lower-priced option. For someone who needs multiple system languages or the international configuration, the multi-language model is the straightforward fit.

Do not confuse hardware pricing with game pricing
Nintendo also introduced different suggested prices for some new Switch 2 games depending on whether they are digital or physical, saying the difference reflects costs associated with producing and distributing each format. That software policy is separate from Japan’s two hardware configurations. Neither physical-versus-digital game pricing nor regional prices for software should be used as evidence that Nintendo’s hardware price gap is an anti-scalping policy. Will dual pricing stop scalping?
It can make one resale strategy less convenient, but it cannot eliminate scalping. The Japanese-only interface and Japan-account restriction reduce the cheaper model’s appeal outside Japan, while marketplace cooperation may help limit unauthorized listings on participating services. But the console can still be resold, buyers may accept the restrictions, and resellers can target demand for the multi-language model instead. The price revision also reduced the original ¥20,000 gap to ¥10,000, changing the potential economics of importing.
The defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline claim sometimes suggests: Nintendo’s two-model Japanese structure may curb cross-border resales by making its cheapest console less universally useful. Nintendo has not explicitly called the pricing an anti-scalper measure, and its stated affordability and market conditions rationales should not be collapsed into one.
