Nioh 3’s defining announced change is instant switching between two distinct combat styles: Samurai for direct clashes and Ninja for speed, evasion, and Ninjutsu. It also adds open-field exploration alongside the series’ yokai fights and Crucible challenges. The first PS5 demo was a limited-time trial in June 2025; a second demo arrived on PS5 and Steam in January 2026. The full game’s announced release date, February 6, 2026, has passed.
What’s new in Nioh 3?
Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja introduced Nioh 3 during a State of Play on June 4, 2025. PlayStation described it as a dark fantasy action RPG set during Japan’s Sengoku period, starring a young protagonist poised to become Shogun. Its central announced changes are two instantly switchable combat styles and open-field exploration. PlayStation Blog’s announcement framed the field as a new freedom of exploration, while keeping formidable yokai, suspicious villages, and Crucible challenges in the mix.

“Bigger Battles” is headline language, not a published measurement: the official announcement does not provide battle-size statistics or a quantified comparison with earlier games. A PlayStation hands-on report called the field a new feature and noted that its own preview area was smaller because it was a demo, so it should not be treated as a map-size description of the final game. The Tokyo Game Show demo report describes a snowfield mission with shrines, equipment chests, Kodama, enemy outposts, and jumps to cliffs and floating stone islands.
What are the Samurai and Ninja combat styles?
The styles are not just cosmetic presets. Team Ninja said players could switch between them instantly or commit to one, and the Tokyo Game Show hands-on report describes Style Shift as changing stats, weapons, skills, and visuals. The practical choice is about how you want to engage: Samurai emphasizes controlled, direct combat; Ninja favors mobility, evasion, and attacks enabled by Ninjutsu.

The timing-based shift can also be offensive: the hands-on report describes a perfectly timed Style Shift against a red-glowing attack as a Burst Break. These mechanics and weapon lists are from a demo-build report, not a complete account of every weapon or final-game system. PlayStation Blog Japan’s hands-on report also details Ki Pulse and Arts Proficiency in Samurai play, and Mist in Ninja play.
Is there a Nioh 3 demo on PS5?
There have been two distinct demos, so the answer depends on which one you mean. The original PS5 trial was announced on June 4, 2025 as free and playable through June 18, 2025; that window has passed. A later demo launched on January 29, 2026 for PS5 and Windows PC via Steam. The publisher and studio described the later demo as supporting solo play and online multiplayer for up to three players, with progress transferable to the full game. Whether that later demo can still be downloaded is not guaranteed: Team Ninja says distribution may end without notice. Its current demo page also sets out practical conditions:
- An active network connection is required to play the demo.
- Online multiplayer requires the relevant platform’s online-service subscription.
- Save transfer requires the same device and account.
- On Steam, the demo and full game cannot connect to each other for multiplayer.
The PS5 PlayStation Store listing identifies that platform’s demo and its January 29, 2026 release date, but it does not establish that the later demo was exclusive to PS5; the publisher and studio also document the Steam version. What happened to the demo completion bonus?
The Twin-Snake Helmet bonus required completing the later demo by February 15, 2026. That deadline has passed. Team Ninja says the item’s conditions for acquiring it in the full game changed after that date; consult its demo page for the current conditions.

Koei Tecmo America announced Nioh 3 for PS5 and Windows PC via Steam with a February 6, 2026 release date. That date has passed. The publisher’s announcement specified Japanese and English voice options and English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish text. The publisher’s release announcement also described physical and digital editions as available to preorder at the time.

What physical editions were announced?
The historical announcement listed a SteelBook Launch Edition and a PS5 physical TREASURE BOX offered through the NIS America Store. The TREASURE BOX was described as including the base game, a Scampuss Furball Netsuke Charm Keychain, an original desk pad, the official artbook, and a selection soundtrack CD. Current stock, prices, regional availability, and retailer listings have not been established here, so the announcement is not a guarantee that either edition is still available.
What did the developers say about the game?
Nioh 3 producer and Team Ninja head Fumihiko Yasuda wrote that “we feel this is the best game in franchise history” in the studio’s January 2026 demo announcement. That is Yasuda’s promotional opinion, not an independent ranking. Team Ninja’s announcement also provides the demo’s stated terms and bonus information.
