Nioh will run at 1280×720 on a 3840×2160 (4K UHD) monitor, but the picture will be noticeably softer than native 4K. The best default is to keep the display output at 3840×2160 and let your GPU upscale the game, using its image-scaling or sharpening option if available. Use 720p only when the performance gain matters more than edge, texture and text clarity.

What 720p means on a 4K display

4K UHD is 3840×2160 pixels; 720p is 1280×720. A 720p render is one-third of the width and one-third of the height of 4K, so it contains only one-ninth as many source pixels. Scaling enlarges those pixels to fill the panel; it cannot recreate detail that was never rendered.

NVIDIA describes the same principle for its Image Scaling feature: the game renders at a lower resolution, then the driver upscales and sharpens the image to the monitor’s native output. Its documentation gives 1920×1080 as a 50% input for 4K and 2560×1440 as a 67% input. 1280×720 is a substantially more aggressive reduction than either example.

How Nioh looks at 720p

  • Edges and geometry: diagonal lines, foliage and distant objects look less defined, with more visible stair-stepping after enlargement.
  • Textures: fine surface detail is lost before the image reaches the scaler, so sharpening can add contrast but cannot restore the original texture information.
  • UI and text: menus and small labels are less crisp and can be harder to read from normal viewing distance.
  • Motion: a higher, steadier frame rate may make combat feel better even though the static image is softer.

Which scaling setting should you use?

GPU scaling at a 4K output (recommended starting point)

Set the monitor and desktop output to 3840×2160, then select 1280×720 in Nioh if that is the resolution you need. Enable your graphics driver’s scaling or Image Scaling feature and, where offered, adjust sharpening conservatively. The GPU performs the enlargement and sends a predictable native-resolution signal to the display.

NVIDIA’s guidance favors matching the game’s selected resolution to the display’s native resolution for maximum image quality. Its lower-resolution rendering mode is intended for cases where you deliberately trade sharpness for performance. Driver features can have fullscreen requirements and GPU-specific limitations, so follow the controls exposed by your own driver.

Monitor scaling

With monitor scaling, the game or GPU sends a lower-resolution signal and the monitor stretches it. This can work, but the scaler quality and available aspect-ratio controls vary by monitor. It also gives you fewer driver-level sharpening controls. If both paths are available, compare them briefly and keep the one with cleaner text and fewer halos.

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

Integer scaling

Integer scaling is designed to enlarge an image by whole-number factors. A 1280×720 image does not map to 3840×2160 by a whole-number factor in both dimensions, so a full-screen 720p-to-4K presentation still requires interpolation or borders. Do not expect integer scaling to make this particular combination look like native 4K.

Resolution trade-offs on a 4K monitor

Input resolution Relative width and height versus 4K Expected sharpness Performance implication
1280×720 33% / 33% Softest; text and fine detail suffer most Lowest rendering load of these choices
1920×1080 50% / 50% Sharper than 720p but still visibly below 4K Higher load than 720p
2560×1440 67% / 67% Good compromise for many systems Higher load than 1080p
3840×2160 100% / 100% Sharpest native image Highest rendering load

The 50% and 67% figures are the scaling examples documented by NVIDIA for 4K output; they describe input-size relationships, not guaranteed Nioh frame rates.

Performance expectations

There is no reliable universal FPS figure for Nioh at 720p versus 4K on the same PC. Published official material supplies system requirements and scaling mechanics, not a controlled benchmark for this exact comparison. Lowering the render resolution normally reduces GPU work, but the resulting frame rate still depends on your graphics card, processor, settings, drivers, scene and frame-rate target.

Steam lists these baseline PC requirements for running Nioh generally:

The listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit. These requirements are not a promise of 4K performance or a locked 60 frames per second.

Practical setup steps

  1. Set the monitor and operating-system output to 3840×2160 at the refresh rate you intend to use.
  2. Start Nioh at native 3840×2160 and check whether your GPU maintains your desired frame rate during demanding fights.
  3. If it cannot, try 2560×1440, then 1920×1080, before dropping to 1280×720. Each step preserves more detail than 720p while reducing rendering work.
  4. If you choose 720p, enable GPU scaling or the driver’s Image Scaling mode, keep the output at 4K, and use only enough sharpening to restore edge definition without bright halos.
  5. Check UI readability and camera motion in an actual gameplay area, not just the title screen, before settling on the setting.

If Nioh does not offer the resolution or aspect ratio you need

A community project named NiohResolution provides a PC patch for resolution and aspect-ratio behavior, and its release page includes user reports of selecting 3840×2160. It is not an official Koei Tecmo support tool. Back up configuration files, read the release notes for your game version, and expect compatibility to change after updates.

Do not transfer the release note that says it adds support for any resolutions to Nioh 2: Complete Edition to the original Nioh. That statement concerns Nioh 2, and the two games should not be treated as having identical official resolution support.

Bottom line for choosing 720p

Use native 4K when your GPU can hold the frame rate you want. If it cannot, 1440p or 1080p is generally a better visual compromise than 720p. Choose 720p on a 4K monitor only when the extra performance or stability is more valuable than sharp UI, clean edges and fine texture detail, and prefer GPU scaling with a 4K output as the first configuration to test.
