Windows 11 is the easier choice if you need Secure Boot and maximum game compatibility. Nitrux 3.9.0 can use Secure Boot, but its installed default kernel is unsigned, so you must temporarily disable Secure Boot, sign the kernel with a user-generated Machine Owner Key (MOK), enroll that key, and then re-enable Secure Boot. For gaming, Nitrux offers Proton, Bottles and Heroic Games Launcher, but compatibility—especially with competitive games and kernel-level anti-cheat—must be checked title by title.
What is different about Secure Boot?
Secure Boot is a UEFI firmware feature that checks digital signatures during startup, helping prevent untrusted boot software from loading. Windows 11 incorporates Secure Boot and Trusted Boot into its normal trusted-startup chain. Microsoft distinguishes between a PC being capable of Secure Boot through UEFI and the feature actually being enabled; firmware menus and requirements vary by manufacturer. Nitrux 3.9.0 takes a more manual path. Its documentation states that the installed default kernel is unsigned and “will not boot if Secure Boot remains enabled since the kernel is not signed.” That means a normal Nitrux installation is not plug-and-play Secure Boot compatible.
Using Secure Boot with Nitrux 3.9.0
Nitrux 3.9.0 added Nitrux SB Manager for creating a Machine Owner Key. The documented process is:

- Enter UEFI firmware settings and temporarily disable Secure Boot. If the computer is using Legacy or CSM mode, switch to UEFI where required by the manufacturer.
- Boot the installed Nitrux system with Secure Boot disabled.
- Use Nitrux SB Manager to create a MOK and sign the installed kernel.
- Restart and enroll the MOK through the firmware’s MOK-enrollment screen.
- Re-enter UEFI settings and enable Secure Boot.
Follow Nitrux’s exact instructions, including the enrollment prompts, at Using Secure Boot with Nitrux. Keep the recovery key and enrollment details available: losing the key or changing kernels later can require repeating the signing process.
Alternative kernel route
Nitrux documents another option through Kernel Boot: a vanilla Debian-signed kernel can support Secure Boot without enrolling your own key. Confirm which kernel is installed and signed before turning Secure Boot back on; the default Nitrux kernel still requires the MOK procedure.

Windows 11’s Secure Boot experience
On Windows 11, Secure Boot is part of the platform’s intended startup design rather than an extra signing project for each installed kernel. To change it, open the PC’s UEFI firmware settings using the manufacturer’s documented key or Windows recovery options, then locate Secure Boot. Microsoft advises consulting the device maker because labels and navigation differ.
Microsoft also reports that certificates issued in 2011 begin expiring in June 2026. Devices without replacement 2023 certificates should continue to start and receive standard Windows updates, but may lose newer early-boot protections and related Secure Boot database, revocation and mitigation updates. Most devices are expected to receive certificate updates automatically; some may require an OEM firmware update. Details are in Microsoft’s certificate-expiration guidance.

Gaming: Nitrux versus Windows 11
Nitrux 3.9.0’s release announcement lists gaming-related improvements: updated installation scripts for Bottles and Heroic Games Launcher, plus graphics-stack versions including Mesa 24.3.4, NVIDIA driver 570.86.16 and AMD Vulkan driver 2024.Q4.3. These are release component versions, not benchmarks or guarantees for particular hardware.
Windows games on Nitrux generally run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer based on Wine and graphics API implementations. Valve says Proton supports some anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, only when the game developer enables and configures the relevant support. Kernel-space anti-cheat is not currently supported. Read Valve’s technical notes at Steam Hardware and Proton.

Some games or their anti-cheat systems require Secure Boot or TPM 2.0 for some or all features. Steam can display warnings, and each game’s store page lists its requirements. Check the exact title before switching operating systems; a requirement for Secure Boot or TPM does not by itself prove that the game will work under Linux. What Nitrux 3.9.0 includes
Nitrux announced 3.9.0 “pd” in February 2025. The release listed Linux 6.12.11-2 (Liquorix), Secure Boot DB and DBX updates to 1.9build1, shim 1.59, MOKutil 0.6.0-2 and SBsign tools 0.9.4-3, alongside Nitrux SB Manager. Nitrux later announced 3.9.1 in March 2025 and advised new users to make a fresh installation with the latest media. This comparison is specifically about 3.9.0, so check Nitrux’s current download and documentation before installing: Nitrux 3.9.1 announcement.
Installation and decision checklist
- Confirm that your PC boots in UEFI mode and record the manufacturer’s Secure Boot procedure.
- Prepare a USB flash drive for the Nitrux ISO; Nitrux’s installation material discusses using Ventoy, but USB media does not sign the installed kernel for you.
- Before installation, list the games you actually play and check their Steam requirements, launcher support and anti-cheat policy.
- If Secure Boot must remain enabled, plan the MOK-signing and enrollment process or use the documented signed-kernel route.
- Verify the downloaded ISO’s GPG signature and SHA512 checksum using Nitrux’s published release information.
- Keep a Windows installation or recovery path if a required game does not support Proton.
No controlled, same-hardware benchmark establishes a winner for frame rate, latency, compatibility breadth or setup speed between Nitrux 3.9.0 and Windows 11. Choose Windows 11 for the least friction with Secure Boot and Windows-first competitive games; choose Nitrux when Linux is your priority and you are prepared to manage kernel signing and verify every important game.
