“The program can’t start because nlsdata000a.dll is missing from your computer.” Other messages include “The code execution cannot proceed because nlsdata000a.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “nlsdata000a.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

nlsdata000a.dll is a genuine Microsoft component described as Microsoft Spanish Natural Language Server Data and Code. The 000a suffix identifies Spanish language data in Microsoft’s language-component documentation, where locale ID 3082 is associated with NlsData000a.dll, NaturalLanguage6.dll, and NlsLexicons000a.dll.Microsoft’s SQL Server full-text binaries

Which fix applies to you

Start with the path that matches the program displaying the error:

  • Windows Search or a Windows component fails: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • SQL Server, SharePoint, or a Microsoft search feature fails: repair or update that parent product.
  • One application or game fails: repair or reinstall that application using its official installer.
  • The error started after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The message says the module could not be found even though the DLL exists: investigate dependencies, architecture, and the calling executable.
  • You are considering a DLL download site: do not download an arbitrary copy. Restore the file through Windows servicing or the product that owns it.

The filename alone cannot identify every application that may reference it. The exact executable path and the location of the DLL request matter.

First, identify what owns the error

Check the failing program

Note the application name shown in the error. Also check when the problem began:

  • After Windows Update
  • After a SQL Server, SharePoint, or application update
  • After uninstalling software
  • After disk cleanup
  • After antivirus detection
  • After moving application files
  • After a suspected malware incident

If only one program fails and Windows works normally, repair that program before changing Windows system files.

Check the executable and architecture

Right-click the program’s shortcut, select Properties, and open the Shortcut tab. The Target field shows the executable path. Write it down.

For a running process, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Details, right-click the column headings, choose Select columns, and enable Platform if available. A 32-bit program can require a 32-bit language component even on 64-bit Windows.

Legitimate copies may exist under locations such as:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A product-specific copy may instead be under a SQL Server, SharePoint, or application installation directory. The correct location depends on the Windows build, parent product, and calling program. Do not copy a file from one directory to another merely because the names match.

Fix 1: Repair Windows components

Use this path when Windows Search, indexing, or another Windows feature is affected, or when the error began after failed servicing or an update.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all applicable updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Test the affected program or Windows feature.

If the error remains, repair the component store and protected system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish. It may pause at a percentage for several minutes.
  2. Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the program again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows image that SFC uses as its source.Microsoft DISM repair guidance Microsoft’s SFC instructions are available here.Microsoft System File Checker instructions

If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and test. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failures require checking the exact component and product path rather than repeatedly downloading DLLs.

If you want to avoid hunting through repair results and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair path.

Fix 2: Repair SQL Server, SharePoint, or the parent product

Microsoft documents NlsData000a.dll as part of the SQL Server full-text language stack. Historical Microsoft servicing records also list the file with Windows and SharePoint components. That means the correct copy may belong to the parent product rather than the copy currently in a Windows directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair SQL Server

Use the SQL Server installation media or the installer already registered on the computer:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for the SQL Server installation or setup entry.
  5. Select its menu button and choose Modify if available.
  6. Open SQL Server Setup.
  7. Select Maintenance.
  8. Choose Repair.
  9. Select the affected instance and complete the wizard.
  10. Restart if requested.
  11. Apply the current servicing updates supported by that SQL Server release.
  12. Test the full-text search operation again.

The exact setup screens vary by SQL Server release. Do not replace the SQL Server copy with a Windows copy.

Repair SharePoint or another Microsoft search installation

Use the original installation media or the product’s supported maintenance workflow. Repair the affected server or application installation, then apply its supported updates. If the error began immediately after an update, check whether the update completed successfully before attempting a manual file replacement.

If the product has its own repair option:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected product.
  5. Select Change or Repair.
  6. Complete the wizard.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test the feature that previously failed.

For server products, record the instance name, product version, Windows version, and failing executable before contacting the product administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Repair the application or game that reports the error

If Windows operates normally and one application fails, the application’s installer is the safest source for its files.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select its menu button.
  5. Choose Advanced options if shown.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application.
  8. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data and settings.
  9. Otherwise uninstall the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or the official store used to obtain it.
  10. Restart Windows before testing again.

For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command where available. Reinstalling the owning program remains the definitive fix when that program supplied the missing component.

Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator if the installation failed because it could not write to its destination. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the executable as a substitute for repairing the installation.

Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine or remove a legitimate file after a detection, including following an update or a damaged installation.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent entries for the affected application or DLL.
  6. Expand an entry and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
  7. If the file belongs to a verified Microsoft or product installation, update the product and rescan before considering restoration.
  8. Restore it only when the origin is known and the detection is understood.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed.Microsoft Protection History Protection History is time-limited, so an older event may no longer be visible.

Never allow an unknown copy simply because its filename matches. Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. If compromise is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.Microsoft Defender scan options

Fix 5: Check dependencies and architecture

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean nlsdata000a.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL or by the application.

Check these points:

  • The application is 32-bit or 64-bit as expected.
  • The DLL came from the same Windows build or parent product.
  • The file was not copied from another computer.
  • The application update and its language components completed together.
  • The DLL is in the directory expected by the calling executable.
  • The file was not replaced by a cleanup utility or failed uninstall.

Historical inventories show both 32-bit and 64-bit variants, including examples such as 32-bit version 6.2.9200.16384 and older 6.1.7600.16385, plus 64-bit and 32-bit 6.0.6001.18000 variants. These are historical examples, not a universal current version list. A newer-looking file is not automatically compatible.

Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal fix for this filename. Those packages do not establish that the correct natural-language component has been restored.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

Do not begin with:

regsvr32 nlsdata000a.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A language-data component is not made functional by registering it, and the command may produce an entry-point error.Microsoft regsvr32 documentation

Use Windows servicing or the owning product’s repair installer instead.

Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A driver update is relevant only if Device Manager shows a device error or the application fails alongside graphics, storage, or hardware-driver problems.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the failure.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Open the General tab and read Device status.
  6. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
  7. Select Update Driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

If the driver problem began after an update, use Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when available. Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appeared; nlsdata000a.dll is not normally a device-driver file.

If checking dozens of drivers manually is the actual obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the application or Windows component that owns nlsdata000a.dll.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download package for nlsdata000a.dll. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or a file missing its related language components. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create servicing and dependency mismatches.

Use these sources instead:

  • Windows Update and Windows component repair
  • The original SQL Server, SharePoint, or Microsoft product installer
  • The affected application’s official installer or repair function
  • Microsoft Defender quarantine restoration only after verifying the file’s origin

If the error returns after repair

Collect the information below before making another change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact error text
  • Name of the failing executable
  • Full path of that executable
  • DLL path Windows attempted to load
  • Windows edition and build
  • Application, SQL Server, or SharePoint version
  • 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • Recent update, uninstall, cleanup, or antivirus event
  • Relevant Event Viewer entry

To check Event Viewer, right-click Start, select Event Viewer, open Windows Logs → Application, and review entries created at the failure time. This evidence distinguishes a missing file from a bad image, incompatible version, or missing dependency.

As a fallback after an update-related conflict, System Restore can return Windows to an earlier restore point, but it may remove later applications, settings, and changes.Microsoft System Restore guidance

FAQ

Is nlsdata000a.dll malware?

The filename identifies a genuine Microsoft Spanish natural-language component, but malware can use a legitimate filename. Verify the file’s location, signature, parent installation, and Defender status rather than judging it by name alone.

Is this a Windows file or an application file?

It can be associated with Windows components and Microsoft products such as SQL Server and SharePoint. The failing executable and file path determine which installation should be repaired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it from another Windows computer?

No. The copy may have the wrong architecture, version, servicing state, dependencies, or signature. Repair the same Windows build or parent product that supplied it.

Should I install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?

No. Match the calling application and its parent product. Installing unrelated copies does not solve a dependency problem.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?

Usually not. nlsdata000a.dll is a Spanish natural-language data and code component, not a Visual C++ runtime file.

Can I register it with regsvr32?

Normally no. Registration is not the repair method for this component and can create a misleading entry-point error.
