You may also see Error loading nlsdata001b.dll. The specified module could not be found, or nlsdata001b.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
nlsdata001b.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with National Language Support, or NLS. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The safest first repair is to let Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker restore the protected component.
What is nlsdata001b.dll?
The file is identified as Microsoft Neutral Natural Language Server Data and Code. It belongs to Windows’ language and locale infrastructure, which supplies applications with information needed for language, regional, and text behavior. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, Office, driver, or known game-specific DLL. Microsoft describes this infrastructure in its NLS terminology documentation.
The 001b portion corresponds to the neutral Slovak locale identifier 0x001B. That identifier does not mean your computer must be configured for Slovak, and it does not identify a particular game or application.

Windows normally stores this type of protected component in its system directories. On 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32represents the 64-bit system-file view.%windir%SysWOW64represents the 32-bit system-file view used by 32-bit processes.
Those names are confusing by design. Windows file-system redirection determines which copy a 32-bit program sees. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
The exact required build and architecture must match your Windows installation. A file that has the right name but comes from a different build, language, or architecture is not a safe substitute.
What the error actually means
A missing-file message usually means Windows or an application could not access the expected component. Common possibilities include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Windows system-file corruption.
- An incomplete upgrade, rollback, or servicing operation.
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive.
- A damaged application installation or private copy.
- Malware using the legitimate-looking filename.
- Disk or file-system corruption.
- A dependency failing even though the message names
nlsdata001b.dll.
“The specified module could not be found” is especially easy to misunderstand. It can mean that nlsdata001b.dll is absent, but it can also mean that a DLL required by it or by the launching program could not load.
First determine the scope:
- If Windows components and several programs show errors, repair Windows first.
- If only one older game or application fails, repair or verify that program after checking Windows.
- If the file exists in a temporary folder, Downloads, a user-profile folder, or an unrelated application directory, treat it as suspicious until its signature and location are verified.
No particular game or installer has been established as the normal trigger for this file.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
Pending servicing work can leave protected files unavailable.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected program again.
If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below. Windows 10 reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025, so do not assume every Windows 10 installation continues receiving free security and feature servicing indefinitely.

This is the primary fix when the file is missing from a Windows system directory or multiple programs are affected. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as a source.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
The SFC result tells you what to do next:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows files appear intact. Investigate the individual application, antivirus history, or a dependency.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use a matching repair source.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions cover these results and commands.
If the manual DISM and SFC cycle is difficult to track, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the proper repair path for a protected Microsoft component.
If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM may report that the source files could not be found. Use a genuine Windows repair source that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching repair source. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer. Microsoft documents this process in its repair-a-Windows-image guidance.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
If the error appeared immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined the file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nlsdata001b.dll. - Expand the event and inspect its path and details.
Restore or allow the file only if all of these are true:
- It is in an expected Windows system location.
- Its properties show a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- The quarantine event identifies the file rather than an unrelated look-alike.
- A full security scan does not report broader malware activity.
If the file was in a temporary or user-writable directory, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.

If the system behaves suspiciously or the file repeatedly returns in an unexpected location, use an offline scan and investigate for malware rather than whitelisting the filename.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and signature
If the file exists but Windows says it cannot load it, do not replace it immediately.
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the file’s location.
- Right-click
nlsdata001b.dlland select Properties. - Check the General tab for its full location.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the Microsoft signature, if present, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A Microsoft signature supports authenticity, but location still matters. A copy in a Downloads folder is not made trustworthy merely by its filename. An unsigned copy, a failed signature, or a copy outside the expected Windows directories should be scanned and removed through a trusted security process.

Do not compare files only by size or choose the newest-looking version. Architecture and Windows build are more important than a label in an online version list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 5: Repair the affected application
Use this step when only one program fails and Windows itself works normally.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command. This can restore a damaged private copy without affecting unrelated Windows files.
If repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Back up the program’s saves or settings if necessary.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the original developer or platform.
- Install it again.
- Test the program before adding unofficial DLL files or modifications.
Reinstalling Visual C++ Redistributable is not the normal fix because nlsdata001b.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Install a runtime only when the application’s official documentation specifically identifies that runtime as missing.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for registerable DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. A Windows NLS data/code component is not automatically a COM or ActiveX component that should be registered.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a recommended repair:
regsvr32 nlsdata001b.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32nlsdata001b.dll
If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not identify the root cause. Repair Windows through DISM and SFC, or repair the application that is loading the file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Consider drivers only for broader system problems
A graphics or device-driver update is not a direct fix for a missing Windows NLS component. Consider drivers only if the same failure began with wider crashes, device errors, or a recent hardware change.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Prefer the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not remove working drivers merely because an application mentions a DLL.

If checking many devices manually is taking time, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Updating drivers is not a substitute for DISM and SFC when this Windows component is damaged.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or a repair installation
Use System Restore when the problem began after a known update, interrupted installation, cleanup operation, or configuration change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can change recently installed programs and drivers. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair or reinstall. Obtain media through Microsoft’s Windows installation media page. Back up important files first, and match the installed Windows edition and language.
FAQ
Is nlsdata001b.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. However, a filename alone proves nothing. Check its location, Microsoft digital signature, and security-scan results. A malicious program can use a legitimate-looking filename.
Does it belong to a game?
It is not established as a game-specific file. A game may fail while Windows is damaged, or the game may have a damaged private copy. If only one game fails, verify or reinstall that game after checking Windows.
Should I copy it from another PC?
Normally no. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, or damaged file. Windows servicing is safer.
Which folder should contain it?
Windows system directories are the expected locations, but the correct view depends on Windows architecture and the process loading the file. Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32 merely because that folder name sounds correct.

What if SFC repairs the file but the error returns?
Check whether antivirus removes it again, whether the application loads a private copy, and whether DISM still reports component-store corruption. If many files fail, back up your data and investigate disk or file-system problems.
Will reinstalling Windows fix it?
A repair installation can help when DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore cannot restore the component. It should be the escalation step, not the first response.
