nmasnt.dll Missing: Restore Legacy NetMeeting Safely on Windows

By VGSources Team 10 min read

nmasnt.dll is a legitimate Microsoft NetMeeting file, but it is a legacy 32-bit component rather than a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 runtime. The safest fix is to repair the original NetMeeting installation or the old application that requested it, not to download a replacement DLL from a random website.

What this file actually does

The file’s embedded description is Application Sharing WinNT DLL. It belongs to Microsoft NetMeeting, the conferencing and application-sharing program included with Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

NetMeeting’s application-sharing feature allowed one participant to view or interact with another participant’s applications. nmasnt.dll was part of that feature set, alongside other NetMeeting executables, libraries, drivers and resources. Microsoft’s NetMeeting protocol documentation describes the application-sharing function, while Microsoft’s security bulletin identifies NetMeeting as a Windows component.

This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file or .NET Framework file. Installing those packages is unlikely to restore it.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

On systems that still have a matching NetMeeting installation, the file is normally associated with a path similar to:

C:Program FilesNetMeetingnmasnt.dll

It should not automatically be copied into C:WindowsSystem32. There is no verified native 64-bit version to rely on, so treat nmasnt.dll as a 32-bit legacy DLL unless the original software vendor provides a different, verified build.

Causes by symptom

What you see Most likely cause Best response
The error appeared after removing NetMeeting Incomplete or damaged NetMeeting installation Reinstall or repair the original NetMeeting package
The error appeared after restoring an old disk image Missing companion files or mismatched versions Restore the complete installation from the same image
Antivirus lists the file in quarantine The file was removed or incorrectly flagged Verify its original path and provenance before restoring
Windows 10 or 11 reports the error Old software is being run on an unsupported system Use a supported replacement or an isolated legacy system
“The specified module could not be found” appears even though the file exists A dependency of nmasnt.dll may be missing Repair the complete product and inspect dependency errors
Only one old program requests the file That program may have bundled or incorrectly referenced NetMeeting files Repair or reinstall the requesting program first
regsvr32 reports a missing entry point The DLL is not a self-registering component Do not keep trying registration commands

Common message variants include:

This application failed to start because nmasnt.dll was not found.
The program can't start because nmasnt.dll is missing from your computer.
Error loading nmasnt.dll. The specified module could not be found.
nmasnt.dll is missing or corrupted.
nmasnt.dll file could not be loaded.

The wording depends on the Windows version and the program making the request. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that nmasnt.dll itself is absent. Windows can show the same message when a dependency required by the DLL is missing.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting nmasnt.dll

Before replacing anything, find out whether the requester is actually NetMeeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Note the full error window, including the executable name if it is shown.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select Startup apps and look for an old conferencing, remote-access or legacy communications program.
  4. Open Settings with Win + I.
  5. Select Apps and then Installed apps.
  6. Search for NetMeeting or the name of the application shown in the error.
  7. If the error appears only when launching one older program, use that program’s own Repair, Verify, or Change option before touching Windows files.

If a modern application unexpectedly asks for nmasnt.dll, do not assume it needs a genuine NetMeeting installation. The reference may come from an old bundled component, a broken compatibility layer or a damaged installation. If the requesting executable is unfamiliar, scan it and verify its installation source.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original NetMeeting installation

This is the most direct fix on a compatible legacy system.

NetMeeting was built into Windows XP and was included with older Windows releases, but later Windows versions removed or replaced it. Historical Microsoft records identify different NetMeeting builds for Windows 2000, XP, Windows Server 2003 and earlier Windows versions. The files from those releases are not necessarily interchangeable.

On Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Look for NetMeeting or the software that launches the error.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Remove, depending on the available option.
  6. If Windows asks for installation media, use the matching original Windows CD or trusted system image.
  7. Complete setup and restart the computer.
  8. Test NetMeeting or the original application again.

On Windows XP, NetMeeting was commonly launched by entering conf.exe in the Run dialog. Press Win + R, enter:

conf.exe

and press Enter. If Windows cannot start it or immediately reports the missing DLL, the NetMeeting component is incomplete.

Use the original installation media for the same Windows release whenever possible. A single file from a different NetMeeting build can create new entry-point or compatibility errors because the program depends on a matching group of files.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11

Do not expect NetMeeting to appear as a normal optional Windows feature. NetMeeting was not included in Windows 7, and later Windows releases do not provide a supported NetMeeting installation path. Microsoft guidance identifies Windows Meeting Space as a replacement introduced around the Vista era, not as a way to install NetMeeting on current Windows.

If an old application genuinely requires NetMeeting, the practical choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Run the complete original application inside a properly isolated Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 virtual machine.
  • Restore the old disk image on compatible hardware kept off the public internet.
  • Replace the obsolete conferencing or application-sharing workflow with a supported product.
  • Contact the application vendor for a current build that no longer depends on NetMeeting.

Copying nmasnt.dll into a modern System32 or SysWOW64 folder does not recreate NetMeeting and does not make the operating system compatible with it.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely

Security software may remove a legacy DLL because old files can have outdated signatures, unusual behavior or known vulnerabilities. A legitimate filename alone does not prove that every copy of the file is safe.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries that mention nmasnt.dll or the NetMeeting directory.
  5. Expand an entry to see its original path and detection details.
  6. Do not restore the file immediately if it came from a download site or an unknown directory.
  7. Restore it only when the original location, publisher and file provenance match trusted installation media or a verified system image.
  8. If you restore it, reinstall or repair the complete NetMeeting package afterward.
  9. Run another scan and test the original application.

Microsoft explains the quarantine and restore process in its Protection History guidance.

If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unrelated game directory or a suspicious user-download location, leave it quarantined until the system has been investigated.

Fix 4: Repair Windows protected components

System File Checker is useful when protected Windows files are damaged. It is not guaranteed to restore nmasnt.dll, because this file is associated with the NetMeeting installation directory rather than being a standard modern System32 component.

Run System File Checker

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Retry the program.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM, restart, then run SFC again.

Microsoft documents SFC in its System File Checker reference.

Run DISM, then SFC

On Windows 8.1 and later, use this sequence from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Run the first command, wait for it to finish, and then run the second. Restart afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that repaired source to check protected files. These commands can fix Windows servicing damage, but they will not turn Windows 10 or Windows 11 into a supported NetMeeting platform.

Running repeated repairs without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what it finds, while its repair functions require the full version; repairing or reinstalling the original NetMeeting-dependent program remains the definitive fix for this specific DLL.

Fix 5: Use System Restore if the file recently disappeared

System Restore can reverse a recent driver, software or cleanup change without removing personal documents.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the nmasnt.dll error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.
  8. Test the original program.

Microsoft also provides the path Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore. If no suitable restore point exists, return to repairing or reinstalling the complete application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies

A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit nmasnt.dll. A 64-bit copy cannot substitute for it, and a 32-bit DLL should not be treated as a general system component.

  • Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video

On 64-bit Windows:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 is conventionally the 64-bit system directory.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components.
  • Neither directory is the correct default home for a NetMeeting application DLL.

The preferred location is the original NetMeeting directory, preserving the product’s complete file structure.

If the file exists but still cannot load:

  1. Confirm the exact path shown by the error or application log.
  2. Check whether other NetMeeting files are present.
  3. Compare all files with the same trusted installation media or image.
  4. Look for an entry-point error, which can indicate mismatched versions.
  5. Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and opening Windows Logs → Application.
  6. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
  7. If possible, test the application under a separate Windows user profile.

A dependency can be absent even when nmasnt.dll is present. Restoring only that one file may therefore leave the same error unchanged.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error points to hardware support

nmasnt.dll is not normally repaired through Device Manager. However, an old conferencing setup may also depend on legacy audio, video or capture hardware.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Cameras.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  6. Read the status under the General tab.
  7. Use Driver → Roll Back Driver only if the problem began after a recent driver update.
  8. Otherwise select Update driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.

Do not install a driver just because nmasnt.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the hardware involved, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it will not replace the need to repair a damaged NetMeeting installation.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.

There is no reliable evidence that nmasnt.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running:

regsvr32 nmasnt.dll

may produce an error stating that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It also cannot repair missing dependencies, restore companion files or make NetMeeting run on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use registration commands only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL.

Do not download nmasnt.dll separately

Avoid DLL download sites and search-result “fixers” offering a single replacement file. An isolated download can contain:

  • The wrong historical NetMeeting build.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • A modified or malicious binary.
  • A file that does not match the other NetMeeting components.
  • An incorrect installation path.
  • A misleading temporary fix that leaves the original program damaged.

The safe sources are matching original Windows installation media, a trusted disk image, the original application installer, or a verified vendor-provided repair package. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone nmasnt.dll download page.

FAQ

Is nmasnt.dll malware?

No. The filename refers to a genuine Microsoft NetMeeting DLL. However, malware can use the same name, so check the path, signature where available, metadata and provenance of the specific copy on your computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does nmasnt.dll belong in System32?

Not normally. It is associated with the NetMeeting installation directory, commonly under Program FilesNetMeeting. Do not copy it into both System32 and SysWOW64.

Does Windows 11 need this file?

Ordinary Windows 11 operation does not require NetMeeting or nmasnt.dll. An error usually indicates an old application, restored legacy image or unsupported NetMeeting component.

Will Visual C++, DirectX or .NET fix it?

There is no evidence that this DLL belongs to those runtimes. Repair NetMeeting or the application that requested it instead.

What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?

The message may refer to a missing dependency. Check the complete NetMeeting file set, version matching, application logs and the original installation source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use compatibility mode?

Compatibility mode may help an old executable launch, but it does not recreate removed NetMeeting components or guarantee that its networking and application-sharing features work. A complete legacy Windows environment is more reliable for software that truly requires NetMeeting.

When should I stop troubleshooting?

Stop copying files when the requesting program is not actually NetMeeting, the DLL came from an untrusted source, or the software is being run on an unsupported modern system. At that point, repair the original application, isolate the old environment or replace the obsolete workflow.
