Neither game is the universal winner. Choose No Man’s Sky if you want procedural exploration, survival and a self-directed journey through a shared universe. Choose Starfield if you want a captain-led RPG focused on factions, cities, outposts and customizing your ship. Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 Free Lanes update added cruise-mode travel within star systems, so comparisons based on older versions can miss a meaningful change.
How the two games differ
The key difference is their center of gravity: No Man’s Sky puts procedural exploration and survival at the forefront, while Starfield frames exploration as part of a captain’s journey through the Settled Systems.
No Man’s Sky: open-ended procedural exploration
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy. Its official feature description highlights discovering environments and creatures, gathering resources, surviving hazards and upgrading equipment, with flight from planetary surfaces to other places in space. Starfield: a captain’s RPG journey
Starfield casts you as a captain exploring the Settled Systems. Bethesda’s descriptions emphasize cities, factions, choices, player-built outposts and customizable ships. Its setting and progression are presented through that captain-led journey rather than the procedural-galaxy premise that defines No Man’s Sky. What Free Lanes changed in Starfield
Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 Free Lanes update added cruise mode, which lets players travel through open space within a star system and reach points of interest between planets. It also brought equipment and ship-customization changes, outpost improvements, a Database, and new locations and encounters. This makes in-system travel a more prominent part of the comparison than it was before the update.
That change has a defined scope: the cited notes describe travel within a star system, not unrestricted seamless travel between star systems. Bethesda presents Terran Armada as a separate story DLC, not as part of the Free Lanes update. Its current Starfield overview outlines the update and DLC.

Starfield is available on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, according to Bethesda. For PS5, Bethesda lists Standard and Premium editions in physical and digital formats. Premium includes the base game, Terran Armada, Shattered Space, 1,000 Creation Credits upon release, a skin pack, a digital artbook and a digital soundtrack. For discovery-led, procedural survival and cross-platform shared play, No Man’s Sky is the clearer fit. For a captain’s RPG journey built around factions, cities, ship customization and outposts, choose Starfield. Free Lanes makes the latter’s in-system travel more substantial than older comparisons suggest, but it does not erase the difference between the games’ core designs.
