Its headline changes were a major refresh to water, clouds, skies and weather, alongside more planetary variety, new ship features, quality-of-life improvements and the Liquidators expedition. It is a historical update, not the game’s current version; later releases include Worlds Part II.
What’s new in No Man’s Sky Worlds Part 1?
Worlds Part I focused on making planets look and behave more varied while adding practical activities and systems. Hello Games’ Update 5.0 notes describe the changes below; they are specific to that release and do not necessarily describe how the live game works after later patches.
- Visual overhaul: rebuilt water and cloud rendering, more varied skies, and environmental effects tied to weather and wind.
- Planet variety: changes across several world types, with new flora, fauna and unusual formations such as floating islands.
- Ship additions: aquatic landing jets and the ability to build Solar-class ships from parts in the Starship Fabricator.
- New activity: the Liquidators expedition, a cooperative insect-combat expedition.
- PC graphics support: DLSS 3 for players with compatible RTX cards.
What changed in the water, clouds and weather?
Water, waves and oceans
The update replaced the previous water approach with a mesh-based system for waves and foam. Water can look and move differently depending on local weather and depth: stormy seas can be rough, while ponds can remain calm. Surfaces reflect the sun and surrounding planetary environment. Hello Games also added splashes and trails when ships fly low over water, and improved swimming and underwater effects.
Clouds, skies and nighttime lighting
Hello Games rewrote the atmospheric and volumetric cloud system. Cloud cover can vary between planets, change over time and respond to weather. Daytime skies gained more color variation; at night, lighting can reflect a planet’s environment, and darkness varies by planet and as the night progresses.

No. Worlds Part I is the July 2024 Update 5.0 release. Hello Games’ official release log lists later releases, including Worlds Part II (5.50). For current features, fixes and game behavior, consult the latest entries in that log rather than treating the original 5.0 notes as current patch notes.
In the July 17, 2024 developer announcement, Sean described the water technology this way: “New water technology can create waves, reflections. Oceans that look so different to what we’ve had previously.”
